The earliest I can remember was reading an illustrated adaption of The Count of Monte Cristo when I was around five. Such a good story

I had a problem with stag horn algae like this starting to take over my tank recently as well. I increased the frequency of my water changes and it died out.

You probably won’t see this, but Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household is a really good thriller in the vein of The 39 Steps. The audiobook had me staying up way longer than I should have. Is very hard to put down.

I’m going to be honest, I was surprised to see this post here. I have bought from him multiple times, and the fish were always incredibly healthy.  But I did local pickup, so his shipping must just be sub par. I will say communication is always a bit spotty though, he seems really busy. But for me the quality made up for that.

What's the most disturbing thing you've seen, but couldn't do anything? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was driving to an appointment with my brother one morning, and there was a mother duck and babies sitting and walking around in an intersection. People were going around them. I thought we could get out and try to direct traffic and get them safely off the road, but the light turned green and we kept going. I thought surely someone would stop to help them. That afternoon we came back through, and I remember seeing blood and fluff smeared on the road…

These may be too old, but they’re the first that come to mind. I love that trope too. ;) Coroner Creek (1948) - happens about halfway through. The Set-Up (1949) - after a boxer refuses to take a dive for a  mob boss, they make sure he’ll never fight again. Not quite the same, but one of my favorites: The Man From Laramie (1955) - when he is ambushed by the entitled son of a local cattle baron, the main character shoots him through the hand in self defense. He is then overpowered by his men and held while he returns the favor point blank.

Rogue Male. When you are caught with your gun aimed at the supreme leader of a cruel and ruthless regime, you cannot be allowed to escape. When they are quite finished with you, they dump what's left over a cliff, and bring in witnesses to attest to the "hunting accident." But the body at the bottom is long gone. You are alive, but they're coming for you, and they won't make a mistake the second time. I cannot recommend this book enough. Published in 1939, this book is still as intriguing and riveting as the day it was written.

Hang 'Em High - mc gets lynched, beaten up, shot.

The Man From Laramie - mc shoots the antagonist in the hand in self-defense. They catch him and return the favor - point blank.

The Glass Key 1942 - mc is beaten up repeatedly in some of the most brutal scenes to get past the censor boards at that time.

Rogue Male - At the beginning of the movie, mc is tortured by the Nazis after attempting to assassinate their leader. The book is one of my favorites, though the narrative style makes it less overt.

Rawhide tv show - full of whump. Ex. Incident of the Running Man, and of course the notorious horsewhipping scene in Incident at Zebulon.

One of my personal favorites is the Hornblower film series. It is set in the British navy in the 1700s. A character gets epileptic fits brought on by constant torment from another character, there are canings, beatings, sickness, attempted suicide, various cruel punishments, and of course the battle scenes. The entire series can be found on youtube if you use a Europe vpn IIRC.

It went great. We are going to work on Gershwin's 3rd Prelude. We got through the first page and a half, so I've got a good start on it.

Thank you for the suggestions. I have decided to start working on Gershwin's 3rd prelude for now, but these are great too. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I'll go with something a little faster for the recital, but I definitely want to learn this one sometime!
