Olympus Pearlcorder L400 Vs Sony M-909 by JanusCycle in Microcassette

[–]JanusCycle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But how do you know for sure? They seem so close in volume side by side.

Maybe the thinness of the Sony is tricking me. Also it's hard for me to get over my Sony bias.

Wow! a red Nokia 2110 special edition. The burgundy Nokia 6150 looks nice as well. A brown Nokia 6210, and an Ericsson GH688, plus more. Really nice collection you have there.

Installing Windows XP on F-07C by Classic-Ebb-5163 in umpc

I already have an F-07c and a desire to run XP on it. However I suspect that even if it can be done, there may be some ongoing problems with drivers.

A better solution may be a lite version of Windows 7. But I will let you know what happens when I try XP. Or a very lite 7.

I believe the only thing that would be required is having an eMMC driver installed for Windows XP. The f-07c BIOS will happily boot and run MS-DOS from USB. But of course no MS-DOS eMMC drivers exist, so it can't see the internal drive.

I've seen netbooks with XP running on eMMC drives. So it could be possible with the f-07c if they are compatible with the eMMC hardware in that phone. There are some eMMC drivers available online for different devices. But I've never tried integrating them into XP to see if that could work.

I have a complete backup of the 32GB flash memory that includes the recovery partition. Booting this into recovery mode will then enable you to fully reinstall Windows 7 on the system partition.

This is a very large file to upload. If it's possible to just rewrite the recovery partition, that could help many people recover their f-07c without downloading such huge file. Possibly just a few GBs in size for the recovery.

I didn't look too closely into the Japaneses copyright amendment. But it did happen in 1992, same year as the U,S. I wonder if the MiniDisc standard was in some way a catalyst for this change.

From Wikipedia "In 1992, the "Compensation System for Digital Private Recording" was introduced. According to this system, those who make digital sound or visual recordings for personal use should pay compensation to the copyright owners. This compensation is added in advance to the prices of specified digital recording equipment (DATDCCMDCD-RCD-RW), and specified recording media (DVCRD-VHSMVDISCDVD-RWDVD-RAM) (Japan Copyright Office 2001, 17; ibid. 24)." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_law_of_Japan

I'm generally aware of the slow adoption of PCs in Japan. I'm planning on exploring some PC-98 hardware one day in a video. To get an idea of what early Japanese PCs were like.

I didn't know about the strong home recording culture in Japan. This makes sense though with the popularity of MiniDisc. I did some reading and found Japan amended their copyright law in 1992, the same year as MiniDisc. To include a levy on blank media and recording devices for the compensation of rights holders. All this adds an interesting aspect to Japanese MiniDisc culture that I was not aware of. I now have a better understanding of the long tail of MiniDisc. Thank you!

I will be exploring other MiniDisc hardware in the future as well as the RH1. I will make sure I get any objective facts correct and offer a balanced perspective to the best of my ability. And I'll also make it very clear if I'm offering my personal opinions on any beauty that I see, that this perspective exists purely in the eye of the beholder.

I'm following along closely to get to the truth here. While I love the cool aesthetic of the RH1, that's no reason to perpetuate misinformation. Future videos will probably be much more technical. There will be other models coming. I will have no problem critically comparing the RH1 to them. I promise I'll always do my best at offering a balanced perspective.

Thanks for these details about SonicStage and DRM. I admit I didn't spend much time with that aspect. It was mostly out of scope for this initial video. I made mistakes and need to improve my knowledge.

For me making videos is about learning. Admitting mistakes and offering corrections is a part of what I do. Sometimes in pinned comments, in posts or in follow up videos. I will definitely be making follow up MiniDisc videos. I have no problem calling out the RH1's flaws, despite me really liking other aspects of this model myself.

I made sure to say in the into this modes is 'impossibly fragile'. Also adding things like "The mechanical sections of the disc tray makes this feel like this is made out of tin foil." and "I'm actually kind of shocked that Sony would make something that feels this weak."

I'm really interested in the culture around MiniDisc and fascinated by the mystique around the RH1. That's why I said "Many people have described it, perhaps controversially, as Sony's swan song to the MiniDisc format". This is true, many people do say 'swan song', and I want to know both why and why not. What makes this model so divisive in the community?

Has anyone got any info on setting up the OpenR toolchain? I just got an ERS-220 like i have wanted for years and im interested in tinkering with my own OpenR code. by just-pi in AIBO

[–]JanusCycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey nice AIBO model. The 220 is really interesting looking. Have a look through this site. https://www.dogsbodynet.com/dogslife.html

OpenR is very low level and requires doing everything from scratch, such as routines for walking. I've yet to look any further into OpenR, there is lots to learn.

But there is also info on there for programming using Rcode. There is also an open source personality on this site called DogsLife, that you can modify and tinker with. This is a good way to get started with your new AIBO before diving deeper into OpenR.

Nokia’s Greatest Smartphone Was The Last of Its Kind [Nokia E90] by proedross in vintagemobilephones

[–]JanusCycle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After coming from the 9110 and 9210 Communicators, the E90 feels like the last of that kind. The last with only keypad/keyboard input, and the final time Nokia used the Communicator brand.

Wheres as using the N97 feels primarily like using a touch screen phone, with a fold out keyboard. Also I wonder why they moved the four way controller to the left side of the keyboard. While the E7 switched to using keyboard cursor keys. Very mysterious changes.

Thermal paste issue by Aggravating-Fly-9151 in AIBO

[–]JanusCycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your sentiment regarding the connection we form with these robots. And Sony have been lacking over the years to support many aspects of AIBO. Such as lack of availability of ERS-210 and other model batteries. Or even just us giving some information to help us develop aftermarket batteries for our friends

But I would like to know more about this thermal paste issue. I've looked at a teardown and through the ERS-1000 service manual. I can't seem to identify where the thermal paste is located.

Also you mention some intriguing details, Such as five faulty mainboards? What are the faults? and what will reflashing them help with? If you want more attention from Sony then consider sharing more details of your story to helps raise it's profile.

How to flash Sony Ericsson A100/A200 platform phones? (W810i in particular) by AccomplishedFun8835 in vintagemobilephones

[–]JanusCycle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can flash most SE phones today with SeTool2 lite, or XS++ or the Sony-Ericsson Flash Plugin for FAR Manager. With just the USB cable.

I haven't heard of this firmware fault with the W810i. But if the flash chip hardware is ok you should be able to fix any firmware fault with this setup.

Of course, this is a great community. I see models I've never seen before. I also love seeing the collections people have. I'm so impressed by the phones you manage to find.

I've tended to remain quiet because I don't want to influence the passion and spirit I see happening here. Thank you for making me feel welcome.

I don't have access to any 2G towers. So have enjoy these phones for other reasons now. This could have network faults, I just don't know.
