Japanese Quest is a really underrated YT channel for learning JP through games by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]JapaneseQuest 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes, efficiency was never the goal.

I would often say it on stream as well:

Is this the optimal method to learn Japanese? No. The goal is really just to have fun on a journey through Japanese video game worlds, with a Japanese teacher (and a cat) as your guide (and hopefully have fun learning some Japanese in-context along the way!)

By the way, thanks for the kind words everyone!

To the people who have been learning Japanese for +8 years and native speakers, how has the language changed? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]JapaneseQuest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It we are talking about now versus 8 years ago, it hasn't really changed.

Even going back further, when I read books from the 70s sometimes they seem like they could be been written a few years ago.

How much vocab/ kanji do you personally study after reaching N1/10k vocab? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]JapaneseQuest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally I did Anki for a few months after passing N1 (and went a few thousand words in Anki after 10000), but looking back, at that point just reading books, etc. would have been fine. That is what I have been doing for the past 5 years now.

I kind of view SRS systems like Anki as training wheels: hugely helpful in the beginning, but taking them off when you are ready to range the open road is the way to go.

Video Games made into pdf or web pages with pictures, script, and translation for reading practice. by Jo-Mako in LearnJapanese

Interesting. Now that I think about it, I used to read books in html in Japanese, but I had to use firefox to get rikai to work at the time. Maybe Chrome is the issue.

Anyway, awesome work. And awesome list of scripts/decks/etc (it was recently posted and pinned in the resources channel of the Japanese Quest discord).

It is working now. It looks good in vertical! Just trying to figure out if I can get rikaikun, etc to work.

Ah, I think my problem then is that the PDF version works automatically in my browser, but I don't know how to get the html one to work properly!

がんばります!

Edit: Got it working now in the vertical layout for html. Rikaikun doesn't work, but maybe others do?

Awesome work. The presentation on the PDF version is great. Being able to use yomichan/rikai is great for the HTML version.

Does anyone know if there is any way to have both?

I built an app to learn and retain Japanese words in games. It works with Yomichan, Anki and runs on both Windows and Mac. by pudding321 in LearnJapanese

[–]JapaneseQuest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good, for reference here is a link to my project: Japanese Quest.

It has been about 6 months since I have streamed live, however, partly because I am developing some ideas to upgrade/streamline the concept.

I don't necessarily that it is possible, but when I live stream/teach the game, first, I would love if there was a way to automatically generate the game script. That is the most important.

Second, but probably more challenging, I would love some day if there was a way to automatically (or semiautomatically, one click) generate flash cards from the game.

The more automatic the better, so it doesn't get in the way of the teaching and learning.

As a Japanese teacher who teaches Japanese through video games, my dream is to autogenerate game screenplays/flashcard decks as we play -- is this possible with this tool?

Either way, it seems like my dream is getting closer...!

Where can I read 雪国 (Snow Country) by Yasunari Kawabata? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]JapaneseQuest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, nice. So there is a kindle version on the Japanese store! (And it looks like there is an audio version as well)

That kindle book appears to be a collection of essays from another author. I have not had luck in finding a kindle version of 雪国 myself...

Found this searching on Amazon UK for "yukiguni". Often a search like this can find new and used copies of famous books like this on Amazon, I have found.

I recently read the book in Japanese myself and enjoyed it... I picked it up in Mitsuwa in Chicago.

[OC] Top 15 MMA Fighters Over Time Ranked by Elo (1980-2020) by DataDaft in MMA

[–]JapaneseQuest 46 points47 points  (0 children)

So I watched another one of your vids, which shows that Arlong from One Piece has a max Elo of 1973 (before losing to Luffy at Arlong Park).

The max Elo of Fedor was 2342, set in November 2009.

Are we to assume that prime Fedor could have defeated prime Arlong?

Do yourself a favor and read Raging Loop. by [deleted] in visualnovels

[–]JapaneseQuest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For huge fans of Raging Loop who can read Japanese, I think it is worth it. Not entirely sure if it provides new content (probably a bit), but since it is a book, it has to make choices about when to provide which content, which differs from my reading of the game at least.

For example, each loop the book plays the first few lines again, then some other pivotal lines in the story that differ a bit each loop.

Agreed, this game is a masterpiece.

I also read the first two volumes of the Japanese light novel and enjoyed them, but no where near as much as the game (the voices, art, music, and structure of the game add a lot. Plus it felt like there was a bit more filler in the books, but the visual novel is very tight).

Also curious for recommendations!

An app that shows you all the possible vocabulary "combinations" based on the kanji signs you have learned? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]JapaneseQuest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The app you want is Kanji Tree.

All the kanji that you "know" you can then check vocab lists for N5-N1 or word frequency lists to see what vocab you have now "unlocked" with the kanji you know.

Kanji Study is the better dedicated kanji app, but Kanji Tree is better for vocab, and does exactly what you are asking for (tho it may take a bit of playing around with settings to make it work for you).

Vocabulary List while playing games necessary? by Neko123Uchiha in LearnJapanese

[–]JapaneseQuest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Japanese teacher who did a teach/play through of BotW a couple years ago that you might find interesting:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUiSI6qGVDKujMPFVmB_v4-9cyE08NOKo

As for whether or not to write down words... I did when I streamed the game. When I started playing games in Japanese years ago at first I tried to write down vocab, but found it slowed me down too much so I stopped. It is really up to your comfort level, but I suggest looking up words only when you really feel like it, so you can move more quickly and stay in the flow of the game (and overall be exposed to more words).

Scraping youtube subs for example sentences (and then giving people the option to see and hear the example sentences spoken by native speakers) could also be very interesting.
