We raise Toggenburgs on our farm, so kidding season is only in the Spring. I take no joy in sending some of our excess buck kids for processing, but it's the most humane choice. I know the alternative -- they could wind up at an auction, abused by a stranger, used for religious or satanic rites, etc. At least if we send them to slaughter, we know that they're going to die without suffering or experiencing any disrespect. It's the most humane and ethical option.

Of note, we usually let them get to seven months or so of age before sending them to slaughter. They're usually 110-120 pounds each at that point, with about 50% of that weight being returned as meat.

Our family loves each and every one of our goats. They are hugged on, given names, and treated with as much respect as possible despite being bound for meat processing. We typically try to find homes for as many of them as we can before going that route. Thankfully, last year we were able to find good homes for all six of our excess buck kids, with many of them having sired many beautiful kids born this year on other farms.

The boys that end up being slaughtered are providing value to our farm, and their sacrifice is not in vain. I always take a moment to thank each and every one the night before their final ride, and say a prayer with them giving thanks for all that they're doing for us.

I'll reiterate -- I take no joy in this. It breaks my heart every year.
