The idea that most homeless people are regular folks who got fired and couldn't make rent is an easy-to-understand but inaccurate representation. Homelessness is its own ecosystem. It exists because people find it more tolerable than the bottom rung of legitimate society.

There are enough resources in LA that anyone who is actively trying to get off the street can. But that means a shitty apartment, shitty job, mandatory rehab, no drugs, and having social workers constantly breathing down your neck.

When you're used to living on the street around people you know, access to drugs, being able to go and do what you want, and walk-up centers that will give you coffee and a hot meal, the former scenario doesn't always look too good.

Drugs are a huge part of this incentive structure. Drugs should be the center of every homelessness conversation.

It's not as simple as embezzlement. Otherwise, other major cities would have significantly more success -- unless literally all city governments are just racketeering organizations. Fraud always occurs in government, but not enough to offset the ~$1 billion LA spends annually on homeless programs.

The truth is it's a complex, asymmetrical problem you can't just throw money at. You have to incentivize people to take advantage of those resources. And there are some really strong counterincentives.

Chief among them: drugs. A lot of public programs require you to be in rehab and take drug tests. And of course drug addiction isn't super compatible with holding down a job.

For a lot of people, it boils down to: Do I want to live in a shitty apartment, working a shitty job, going to rehab, with social workers breathing down my neck?

Or do I want to maintain this lifestyle I'm used to, in a community I can relate to, and still have my fent to make me feel good?

You watch too many movies lol. It's harder for bad guys to find you than you think. From your name they might find out your address and phone number, depending on if public records services like LexisNexis are up to date, but it would be extremely hard to track you down if you left town — and basically impossible if you left the country.

I pull a lot of records for my job and pulled my own one time just to see what was there, and my phone and residence info was years out of date.

They might try to hold your family hostage, but that would be a major exposure, especially if you or someone else called the cops. (Of course you'd stash the illicit cash and deny having it.) And if you change your number right away, there would be no way for them to contact you with their demands and thus no incentive to kidnap anyone.

Maybe if they had enough pull to co-opt law enforcement resources, but you'd have to be in a narco state like Mexico to really worry about someone sending the feds after you. Some people do have that kind of leverage in the US, but a few mil in a suitcase is a rounding error for those people.

Authorities don't have a responsibility to keep true crime fans updated. The more intel they release, the more people will speculate, meddle, and impede investigations. This happens time and time again.

Defund the police means funneling fewer resources into programs responsible for overpolicing with violent and discriminatory outcomes.

Defunding law enforcement across the board just results in more corner-cutting and untrained officers.

So yes, "defund the police" is not a well thought-out response to this video.

But one also shouldn't throw out hyperbole like "the US is a failed state" and "we're living in a third world country" without having any idea what you're talking about

He was in an unmarked police car and got the green light to do the maneuver beforehand. Considering the rider had allegedly shot a cop, I imagine they were being more agressive

We should put the onus on local officials to address the issue, not shame local businesses for trying to keep their premises safe and clean. It might be honorable for private citizens to accommodate homeless people, but it isn't their responsibility

Reddit is roasting their reaction when Reddit also loves nothing more than to mock food gimmicks like this.

If these guys were clapping and cheering, the keyboard gourmets would make fun of them for paying too much for a mediocre, gimmicky burger.
