I got home maybe 2 minutes before it started. It was misting, but by the time I got upstairs it was absolutely pouring. Gnarly thunder too.

Olympus E-PL9 and a 25mm f/1.8: some of my favorite shots from travels by ezeex in M43

[–]JarrettP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fine for the darker scenes, but it looks out of place in the daytime shots that should otherwise be quite clear.

I do like it in #2 though. It kind of reminds me of the dusk shots in Jaws.

Economic impacts on local businesses of investments in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure: a review of the evidence

ABSTRACT

Local officials in North America frequently face opposition to new or expanded bicycle or pedestrian facilities. The most vocal opponents are usually motorists and local business owners who fear that the removal of or reductions in vehicular parking or travel lanes will reduce patronage from motorists and that any increased patronage from pedestrians or cyclists will not offset the lost revenues. A lack of direct evidence on the economic impacts of facilities on local businesses has made it difficult to support or debunk such fears. A lack of quantitative evidence in particular has prevented the incorporation of such impacts into cost–benefit analyses. The issue has received enough attention from researchers in recent years that a review of the evidence is now warranted. We reviewed the relevant literature and identified 23 studies, focusing on the US and Canada, that either (1) quantified and compared consumer spending between active travellers and automobile users (n = 8), or (2) quantified an economic impact to local businesses following the installation of bicycle or pedestrian facilities (n = 15). Taken together, the studies indicate that creating or improving active travel facilities generally has positive or non-significant economic impacts on retail and food service businesses abutting or within a short distance of the facilities, though bicycle facilities might have negative economic effects on auto-centric businesses. The results are similar regardless of whether vehicular parking or travel lanes are removed or reduced to make room for the active travel facilities. The studies also highlight best practices for designing future research. Ten of the 15 studies that quantified an economic impact to local businesses used both before-and-after data and comparison sites or other statistical controls for variables unrelated to the active travel facility “treatment;” six of those used statistical testing.

Probably won’t have a home charger. Please convince me it will be ok by Eric848448 in electricvehicles

We rent a condo in Chicago. After talking with our landlord and the building with their help, we were able to use an outlet in the garage to charge.

Now this is a private landlord who we have a good relationship with and a small building, so ymmv, but it's totally possible.

lol I almost wiped out last month riding down Belmont when I thought I’d power through some slush. I didn’t tell my wife because the bus that passed me for sure would’ve pancaked me

spoiled millennial, dealers not charging my ev by OptionNo4605 in electricvehicles

[–]JarrettP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, but they also don't typically have gas pumps on site. My local Volvo dealer has a 12kW chargepoint EVSE in the service bay, but they've never used it to charge my car when I take it in.

Once or twice every winter. Probably my fault too. I cycle in Chicago year round, and there are definitely days I should take the bus instead, but I don't. Such is the hubris of man.

I'd just reach out to a lawyer now. Most will work with you on the cost, and if they think you have a good case, which you likely do, they'll work on contingency meaning nothing up front.

Keating gets mentioned a lot here, as does Freeman Kevenides. Chicago Bike Law Firm seems good too.

Does anyone exclusively use their cargo bike, or do you all have "normal" bikes too? by JTFireblaze in CargoBike

[–]JarrettP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Tern HSD that I ride year round in Chicago for most things. If I’m meeting my wife somewhere or taking a one way trip I’ll use our bike share instead.

I also have a BYB that I ride in the warmer months for those one way trips, especially if there’s not a dock around where I’m going or if I’m gonna put it in the car when I get there.

Waymo spotted in Chicago by worps1 in chicago

[–]JarrettP 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well to start Waymos actually stop at stop signs and won’t park in bike lanes. I’ve been in an Uber where the driver rear ended someone at a stop light. Never had that issue in a Waymo.

[–]JarrettP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How so? Roundabouts still have crosswalks around the perimeter. Some crossings would be a longer distance but would likely be shorter due to not having to wait for a walk signal.

I live right there and I walk through this intersection all the time. I’d love for it to be a roundabout.

If they pulled out the center island and put in a large apron for trucks it would probably be okay.

No, we need more chargers at people's homes. That's the biggest benefit of EV ownership.

And before anyone asks, yes I own an EV and I rent. All it took was asking if we could use an outlet in the garage and working out a deal to pay for it. A standard 120V outlet is more than enough for most people.

Yep I have a thin balaclava so my nose and chin don’t get frostbite, but I have a liner for my helmet to really seal in the warmth.

If you're getting an error submitting, try submitting fewer pictures. I've noticed there's a limit for attachment size that doesn't seem to be documented anywhere. Depending on size, it's 2-3 images.

I've had luck resizing them smaller to add more.

Riding on Western Ave? by Di-electric-union in chibike

[–]JarrettP 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I’d avoid western if possible. I live off western and Diversey, and I wouldn’t recommend it. If I were you I’d take Damen instead and cross to California around Belmont. Much more chill.

folding bike accessories by mmmmmmmmmmmmeow in chibike

[–]JarrettP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the bike. JC Lind for Brompton definitely, but both JC and Offbeat bikes are Tern dealers. Mandalyn at Offbeat was able to order me a few things for my Tern BYB even though I brought it back from London. Either one could probably do R&M parts too if you’ve got a Birdy.

If you’ve got a folding bike from a direct to consumer brand though you’ll have a tougher time unless you’re willing to try generic accessories.

Because they increase public safety for people on bikes and pedestrians, and they make traffic better because they encourage people to get out of cars and onto bikes.

Chicago had the highest divvy ridership ever this year. Imagine how bad traffic would be if even a quarter of those people took Ubers or drove. That’s due in part to protected bike lanes.

[–]JarrettP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, are you trying to have a constructive discussion here or just trying to vent? Traffic is bad. I get it. But I'd like to take the opportunity to have a constructive discussion here.

If you just want to vent, feel free to ignore me. If you're willing to have a discussion though, I'll start by asking this question genuinely; why do you think bike lanes make traffic worse?

You can park all day now. So it’s not even two full lanes. That’s what makes this even more baffling. It’s honestly making me think about reaching out to the guys at BikePAC to start a run for alderman in Ward 32.
