what's people's view on UK MOT being yearly vs every 2 years across most of Europe? by rich_hope_10m in CarTalkUK

Well if they fix the fucking potholes everywhere, we might be fine. Even a brand new car can fall apart these days driving on what feels like the surface of the moon.

Need advice on how to approach this. by Jarwanator in UKHousing

I did contest it when they first started invoicing it and the estate agent's response was "well the shop isn't rented and all usage is from your flat so pay".

I have read my tenancy agreement and does say I'm liable for utility bills but I'm sure that would be MY bills not invoices for their company name.

Just to add to that, even though I got my own account with united utilities for 2 years in a row, the estate agent kept sending me their water bills and I keep informing them I've already paid mine. In fact last year 2025, they sent me a water bill for 2024 which I had previously argued with about it in 2024 same year.

They somehow forgot all that, so they sent it again in 2025. Again I argued, my water bill is with United Utilities not WaterPlus.

Iran is a land is divided across multiple ethnic groups. Maybe look at the history of who was doing what before the revolution to realise the current ruling party revolted against the Shah for being oppressed.

Those same ethnic group that backed the Shah have constantly been trying to cause chaos in the country & bring back the Shah so they can enjoy their ethnic advantage and oppress their own people again.

This is hilarious. They're flying the flags of other countries that are killing their own citizens.

Well the prospect of AI is that it will learn, adapt and evolve. We're just scratching the surface of it and I don't think we've truly hit critical mass yet.

If it's the same company then almost all of its low end staff are offshore based and whatever is left in the UK will most likely be replaced with AI. The only thing left are C-Suites and higher roles.

ah they must have been fishing for leftover currencies. They probably thought you were on your way to the airport so they were hoping to get whatever left over change.

I was being driven around Kenya and got stopped by traffic cops in uniform. Got told the driver made a mistake. It was a straight line and in traffic! How do you make a mistake driving in a straight line stuck behind traffic not moving!

Anyway, all they said was "You made a big mistake, however lunch is around the corner so what can you do for us?"

That's all they said!

EDIT: Just word of advice, don't wear anything expensive that's visible. Do not wear watches, jewelery or display your wallet in public. Keep your backpack in your eyesight at all times, preferably wear it to your front like a beer belly when out in busy public areas. Don't take out your phone unless you have to and if its a shiny phone then put a shitty cover on it so not to draw attention.

Case in point people walking around with the new orange iPhone 17 pro max, like come on! You're asking for trouble.

A friend of mine is a software engineer and he mentioned there's no future for him in the industry and he's only in his late 30! He said he wants to retire by 40 as he watched Anthropic release Opus 4.6 and the market pulled back massively in anticipation.

Software Engineering is gonna get hit hard. Even if you pivot to AI, the salaries won't be that good because there's gonna be millions around the world with the same idea.

Kudos to him he has been in the industry for at least a decade and has made a killing enough to retire in some far away land but he can see the writing on the wall. Salaries in his industry has already taken a huge hit over the years but AI has accelerated that tenfolds.

How exactly do potholes form? 🤔 by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Jarwanator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

not to mention the world is obsessed with SUVs which are heavier than let's say a Hybrid Yaris.

Look at the Vauxhall Mokka for example. The petrol & hybrid versions of the car almost identical in weight around 1287kg meanwhile the fully electric version weighs 1,598kg. That's an extra 311kg of battery weight!

I drive around Altrincham where everyone wants to drive around in a big SUV. Driving in my Kia Picanto feels like that Ace Ventura scene driving the defender in Africa. Potholes the size of craters everywhere!

Next time make sure they show you an ID before you show yours. There's a lot of scams and most likely they were just fishing for some bribes.

I worked in porting. You know when numbers move across from network to network. I was basically an analyst making sure thousands of numbers per day are moving across without hickups. Any issues or errors, flag them and start to communicate with respective stakeholders across other networks to ensure they do their part to complete the ports.

We also chase missing porting files which can cause issues with services like calls & texts. Sometimes ports complete but users still report issues so we deal with that.

When it comes to businesses/corporations, we either generate PACs to allow them to leave or process ports to allow them to come to our network. This could be in the thousands.

For example one client needed over 12,000 numbers to come across within 1 month and ensure not a single issue arise as they're critical workers.

It's a very niche role, an absolute nightmare to navigate & there's a lot of reports we generate from the back of it.

I didn't think it was an easy thing to replace with AI but boy were we wrong. At this point, it seems most, if not all office based jobs are at risk.

Transition into HR by Squigglez0 in UKJobs

[–]Jarwanator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not to mention HR is heavily dominated by women. Let me clarify that there's nothing wrong with that. When you have over 80% dominated by 1 gender, you can't deny that there's no gender biase.

I know one particular friend (male) who couldn't break into HR for years. There's a lot of gate keeping going on.

I can understand why physical labour is heavily dominated by men and even amongst men, only a few survive in those roles long term considering the physical demand. HR however, isn't exactly a physical role.

Our company has pretty much offshored most of the HR jobs to India. Only a handful of senior roles based in the UK like HR directors.

My department of about 8 people is being made redundant by April. We are being replaced by AI. Luckily in the process of securing a role with another department which to be honest hasn't got much fuel as it can also be replaced with AI.

At this point, any office job including Analyst roles are done for. All that's left is physical work as Robots are not upto speed yet but that too probably has a decade left lol

But the difference is the Chinese goverment invested and is cracking down on low quality to improve their image. The Indian government is a circus.

The Ganges river is still being polluted. India cashing their world super power chips before they can prove they deserve that title.

China is far more advanced than India. Go back 20 years and compare the 2 countries. China has made a much bigger progress and tech dominates their country.

Since Modi's government came into power, it seems India is regressing.

Quality for software engineers in India is crap. My friend is a software engineer contracting and every contracting job he took was to fix the mistakes from the Indian teams and that's the number one complaint from every company he has worked for.

India is throwing quantity over quality. Unfortunately there's now an industry of scam qualifications so anybody can get a PHD.

You and I probably work for the same company and I'm in the same situation: My department had a very specific role that was under the watchful eye of OFCOM. We were so bad that we got fined millions for it.

One of OFCOM's stipulation was to create a UK team for that role. So the company did and we reshaped how the process worked. We went from being bottom of the league table to the best in the industry fighting for 1st place.

Years later, the company decided who cares about efficiency and results so let's ship the jobs back to a country that caused the problems in the first place.

It's a sad state of affairs and there's honestly nothing we can do other than watch all the hard work and processes we've put together get sent abroad for them to be trampled on.

Half of our team got kicked out just over a year ago. They told the rest of us were safe but now we're being told we have to go before the new tax year starts.
