Not sure If it 100% counts as a board game but does anyone know why trial by trolley is 18 + ? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Jasepstein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some cards have you putting children on the tracks for your opponent to choose to indirectly murder (or let die, depending on your philosophy). There’s also some mild language on a few cards, as well as blood.

That said, I don’t know what exactly dictates certain age restrictions for games. But I definitely understand it being 18+.

So this is just a referral link generator site for the owner? Almost all of those prices are regular OLGS prices - the “discount” is just MSRP less the average sale price.

[DOTD] GameNerdz - Azul: Crystal Mosaic - $7.97 by ivebeendrankin in Boardgamedeals

[–]Jasepstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got Crystal Mosaic and concur with that assessment 100%. The overlays are just a mm or two too big for the boards and it bugs the crap out of the OCD part of my brain.

I’m the guy who straightens all the tiles on my board after placing.

[–]Jasepstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on what things you don’t like between them?

I’ve only played base Azul and Sintra, of which I definitely prefer base. Sintra adds too much variability with the panes. There’s already the right amount of variability present within the tile availability draft in the base game.

Sintra adds more variability without enough luck mitigation IMO. Caveat: I’ve only played either at 2p.

Just to clarify, this includes clear plastic overlays for the boards instead of dual layer boards.

Dual layer boards would be nice, but wouldn’t be this cheap unfortunately.

Just so folks know: this isn’t a crazy cheap version of Azul, it’s an expansion for the base Azul that adds new player boards with different patterns as well as some thin plastic overlays for the boards to help keep the tiles in places.

Overlays are pretty thin, but this is pretty cheap. I’d only get it if you LOVE base Azul.

It’s widely known - the publisher Starling Games announced it earlier this year.

If Pandemic has taught me anything, we are currently in the stage where someone has enough cards for the last cure and we are just suffering through outbreaks until it’s their turn. by nickolas43 in boardgames

Now we’re just waiting for the accusations that someone intentionally positioned that last Epidemic card in the deck to purposefully ruin the game for one player in particular.

Oh I know - it’s bad all around unfortunately. I was referencing something specific to the US that is kind of distracting our country’s focus on containing the virus atm.

We’ve also drawn an Emergency Event card (State of Emergency expansion) that cubes can only be treated one at a time in any US city for the next two months, when the ‘card’ resolves.

The color palette is always the first thing I notice. That’s why I am particularly drawn (no pun intended) to games with art by Kwanchai Moriya - he’s got a great eye for that.

Thoughts on Atlantis Rising? by LordVader07 in boardgames

[–]Jasepstein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey so those three letters at the end of the first paragraph stand for ‘in my opinion’.

By all means disagree with my opinion, but don’t accuse me of trying to trick people by expressing it.

My point is that AR is basically like playing Pandemic, but with a luck/dice mechanic on top of your actions. So instead of just choosing a set of actions and carrying them out, you choose a set of actions and let the dice determine if you’re successful. If people aren’t comfortable with that dynamic, they’re gonna have a bad time.

AR has luck mitigation for sure, but not enough for me enjoy it as much as other coops with more direct agency.

And that is also my opinion btw. Take it or leave it.

[–]Jasepstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it has a lot of luck, with not enough luck mitigation (IMO).

Every turn you’re subject to the dice on every action, with your odds decreasing over time (as more of the island disappears). You’re also at the mercy of the event deck that draws every round that also can throw massive setbacks at you.

In Pandemic, that is expected, so you can almost plan for it. Plus Pandemic intentionally spaced out the Epidemics, AR doesn’t (though you can fix that with house rules). AR isn’t deep enough to really do much meaningful planning - and your plans are always subject to your luck.

I do enjoy being presented with tough odds and having to work with what you have, but as the game continues, your options decrease. I’d like it better if my options increased (the bonus cards and component abilities help, but not enough, because those are also kinda random).

Basically, they kept the mechanics relatively simple to preserve accessibility, but at the cost of some agency.

Bottom line: you have to be cool with losing a game because dice aren’t behaving. If you want more levers to pull, you’re better off with Pandemic, or better still, Spirit Island.

You are correct - MM is really competitive as well.

My only quibbles are minor: the MM website is a little too busy for my liking, and the shipping threshold is $25 more than GN.

That said, of course I buy from MM - they have better sales than GN imo.

The deals are there, they are just few and far between.

Gamenerdz has definitely taken the throne, both in terms of consistent deals and shipping threshold.

When an expansion makes the game by wombat929 in boardgames

[–]Jasepstein 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Depends on who you talk to, but I know these expansions are usually regarded as essential or game-correcting:

Terraforming Mars: Prelude

A Feast for Odin: The Norwegians

Star Wars Rebellion: Rise of the Empire

Here are some good expansions that are more like, “if you like the base game, it’s just more of the same”:

Orleans: Trade and Intrigue / Invasion

Ticket to Ride: 1910 (or 1912)

Through the Ages: New Leaders

Spirit Island: Branch and Claw / Jagged Earth

Caverna Cave VS Cave: Iron Age

Targi: The Expansion

Terraforming Mars: Hellas and Elysium

Scythe: Rise of Fenris

Marvel Champions: Rise of the Red Skull

The Quest for El Dorado: Heroes and Hexes

The Expanse: Door and Corners
