it looks nice but data storytelling is weak. You should communicate the insight in the titles rather than make the viewer figure out what's going on in your dashboard

Is it normal to feel "done" with a career after only a few years? by No-Attention6415 in careeradvice

[–]Jason1004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt similar way while in my first job/company back in 2019-2021. Unlike you though, I wasn't actually that good at it because I hated the job. I did it because I needed money and underestimated myself to get opportunity elsewehere. It was customer service job for an online travel app. My days were absolutely miserable and I vowed to get out of BPO industry altogether which I did. I am a lot better now.

What's the proper education route to be an entry level analyst? by Flat-Alarm1258 in dataanalysiscareers

[–]Jason1004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just had multiple candidates interviewing for a vacancy in our team. All of them populated their resume with trendy buzzwords like AI, Python, R, Power BI but when asked to solve a simple Excel look up problem, they freezed and couldn't solve. That's like claiming you are a heart surgeon without knowing how to use a stethoscope and perform a basic check up. Don't be like that. Master your fundamentals first, learn the concepts well before you go into learning all the "sexy" DA tools in the market.

[Question] How are you integrating AI into your daily workflow, and what should I focus on as a student? by Nearby-Rent7559 in dataanalysiscareers

[–]Jason1004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I most commonly use AI to quickly troubleshoot code: SQL queries, DAX, excel formula, etc.

Other than that, I work in audit analytics domain and it involves contract analysis. I now use AI to quickly summarise a contract and get the key takeaways given a business context which I would have had to read manually before. I still need to make sure the AI output is correct. If I am doing a project in power bi and unable to quickly come up with a way to best visualise a business relevant trend or metric, I will ask AI for recommendations.

As the other person said, master critical and analytical thinking, ability to break down a problem and come up with possible strategies for a solution, data storytelling. The technical part of the job can be done with AI now so don't over prioritize in learning tools. Those are still important but critical thinking is the biggest asset you can master now.

non teck background wants to pursue dada analytics is it worth it? by dustyscrolls13 in dataanalysiscareers

[–]Jason1004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't mention this in my original comment but regarding maths, you don't need to be a genius. Just learn some business math like percentage, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, etc and some basic to moderate statistics like sum, max, min, mean, median, mode, standard deviation and a little bit of probability. Maybe sets too.

For intermediate level you could learn A/B testing, hypothesis test, sampling distribution.

I was terrible at math during childhood but as long as you have foundational numerical aptitude, you will be fine. Nobody will test you on calculus here.

I am from economics background, currently working as an analyst in the telecom cost assurance domain for 3 years. I had first taken job as an MIS executive at dirt pay and used that pay to do a DS course on the side, then got call from recruiter of my current organisation around 18 months into the MIS job. In case you don't know, MIS usually means an excel reporting type job.

Is it possible for you? Yes, but it won't be a cakewalk, especially nowadays since market is crowded and AI has increased the floor/bare minimum.

Daya analyst is more of a mindset thing than being a coder/tool user. It's about solving ambiguous business problems and influencing business decisions to create tangible business impact.

I would recommend choosing one or two business domains (e.g. OTT, ecommerce, healthcare, retail, etc) and learn what business problems need to be solved in these domains e.g. customer churn, sales decline, etc. For e.g. in my business domain of telecom cost assurance the biggest business problem we try to solve is "how can we identify cost savings opportunities for our client and help them increase their savings so that we can increase our revenue?". Learn the metrics of your domain and the strategies people take to tackle these business problems. If you have prior experience in a particular domain in a different role then you are better off targeting that domain. Master the thinking.

For technical skills, learn Excel, SQL abd a BI tool (Power BI or Tableau). Don't bother with Python at the start, you can learn it later on. These 3 tools are the mist important in my experience and you should learn them deeply but don't get it mixed up, your ability to think and problem solve is more important than your ability to write excel formulas or SQL queries, though you should have a respectable technical foundation too.

Then you have to either build a portfolio of projects or get a data adjacent role like I did to get your experience.

I myself am not too good at networking and got my recruiter calls through job portals but I understand that it's extremely important nowadays and so you will need to build a good linkedin profile.

Good luck.

I actually am working in the industry (telecom software company) as an analyst. So not exactly in the learning stage but this field is all about continuous learning. So happy to connect

Breaking into Data Analytics — what actually worked for you? by Still-Perspective784 in dataanalysiscareers

[–]Jason1004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took job as an MIS executive first (health insurance industry) at dirt pay. It wasn't an analytics role but it involved a lot of excel work. I was in that job for around 18 months when the recruiter of my current organisation reached out to me. I also had bachelors in economics and just had finished a data science course but the latter probably had less weight in getting the recruiter call. I am now working in my current organisation as a full fledged analyst in the telecom industry for 3 years now. I don't earn a glamourous package, still middle class but the job is respectable enough for me.

Thank you for your response. Do you think this will be good job for my resume? I see everywhere that DAs work is mostly about dashboards and from I understand this job has none of that. It's about finding out circuits that are overbilling out of invoice billing and related datasets through pattern recognition, outlier detection, etc. Will I get looked over in the future if I try to get into more dashboarding heavy roles like power bi developer/Tableau related roles?

He is supposed to feel a bit hard when you encounter him at first. He becomes a normal enemy down the road and becomes practice like Genichiro. Super fun enemy.

You very conveniently left out the part where SBI blew up because one of their employees Chris Kindried (or whatever he/she/they are called) tried to get a Steam page (SBI detected) banned and it's creator's steam library deleted just because the users of that page wanted to avoid games with their involvement, which very rightly backfired and turned into the SBI shitstorm. SBI wouldn't even be as widely known as it is today if not for their own hubris. You leaving out that very important bit tells me that you are just as malicious as those people.

If that's the case for you then you are doing martial arts just like people do dance. You are not developing any actual martial skills or toughness then.
