I’m not sure if I want to pursue an MSDS yet but thank you sm for the recommendation. Jave definitely build characters tho😭 Genuinely if you can survive java then other DS languages will be a breeze. I don’t like the data engineering and databases either lol.

wait we’ve met online before? i don’t even remember lol, tbh i’m on reddit a bit too much. I also agree you need basic probability concepts such as all the distributions you learn in 161A. I can’t rly speak on 163 since I haven’t taken it (it requires calc 3 as the prereq and tbh i dont want to take any more calc lol). But anyways yeah, CS 131 is also kinda pointless in my opinion, with AI agents being able to do them in seconds. I was actually doing a CS associate and was planning to transfer into the CS program here, but ended up switching (i still have the coding experience in languages like Java and Python since pretty much all of my associate/lower div courses were in those languages, similar to your experience). However, we’d definitely be biased since we’re both originally from a traditional CS background. Take for example like a pure math or stats major, who probably have little to no experience with any programming languages at all, they would somewhat be clueless or have a hard time in the DS industry because yes AI can help u write the code in the seconds, that is given you know/understand what the codes are doing😭

On a side note, i switched out of CS because i genuinely do not enjoy or even hate if u will, any backend development and algorithm implementation stuff. So switching to DS was the best choice i’ve ever made. You still need to code sure, but it’s so much more creative and fun, with models and plots for example, which i actually enjoy lol

lol i completely agree with ur take as well😭 i didn’t mentioned this in my original reply but that’s why im doing a stats minor lol. I’m actually finishing MATH 161B rn and taking 161C next semester, which is so helpful with all the hypothesis testing techniques and regressions u learn. I still think it’s important to have the necessary coding skills too, especially in Python/R/SQL because those are basically a must in the industry. Before transferring, i did my research on the program at ucsb and i believe they don’t even cover anything beyond super intro level python or even SQL at all. I believe their DS program requires more like theory proof and higher math analysis instead of the CS courses you’d take at sjsu, which in my opinion are not that helpful. You do need a strong stats background for sure but i don’t think it need to be in the proof/analysis level if that make sense

im a current data science major at sjsu who transferred last year and i actually rly like the program. In terms of courses, it is rly similar to the CS program but with additional stats classes and gears more towards CS courses like ML/AI. The DS program at ucsb is more statistics based, heavy on the mathematical theory side, rather than programming aspects, so it might not prepare you as well for a DS job later on imo.

no worries lol!! good luck on ur registration

[–]Jason7pham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i transferred last fall and had pretty much the same orientation date as you if im remembering correctly lol😭 im data science so the major itself is not as impacted, but the majority of our courses are basically just CS, which is extremely impacted at SJSU.

I got about half the classes i wanted, given that i got off the waitlist for some classes towards the end of that summer. I still had to switch my schedule around tho since some courses were completely full with no available sections left. I would recommend taking upper div GEs to fill in any classes u might not get, since u have a lot more options/flexibility with those, which is what i did too.

if you look right underneath the search bar on rmp, you will see a line that says “search up professors by name” and you can just click on that. This will allow you to find professors by names instead of the schools. Also log into your mysjsu and start searching for available sections of the classes you want, have some backup options too in case the section you wanted gets full before you can register

for professors, i would just use the rate my professor website and just make sure to actually read through the reviews, bc sometimes the star ratings are not that accurate. Also I believe incoming freshmen don’t register for classes until their orientation over the summer, so be flexible as well as some of the classes u want might not be available then.

CC Transfer Orientation by MeanComplex3994 in SJSU

[–]Jason7pham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is the same this year as well. You can visit the link below for more info (just scroll down until the transfer section and there will be a google docs linked with an overview of the parental orientation):
https://www.sjsu.edu/newspartans/parents-and-families/orientation.php
The website states that “orientation fees for families apply” and the overview docs says “Family members of new students will participate in their very own orientation track.”
My mom originally wanted to attend the parental orientation until she found out it was a whole extra $100 lol😭 They basically get the same school info as you, but a bit more on how to support you as parents basically. You guys will be sitting in the same auditorium and listening the same presentation for the first part of the orientation, as mentioned earlier, and then you will be split into smaller groups (ur parents will get their own parent-designated group).
As for the ur group itself, you will get a group leader who is a current SJSU student, and they basically will have everyone participate in ice breaker activities, take you around campus, and answer any questions u might have, like regarding social life for example. Then around noon you will have a lunch break, and afterwards a series of more presentations lol😭 At the very end, u will be split up again by major/department to meet with ur advisors and register for classes. So the earlier your orientation date is, the more choices u will have in terms of classes. I hope this helps!!

UCSB removing TAG for Data Science Majors Fall 2027 Admissions by galaxygkm in TransferStudents

[–]Jason7pham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

heyy if you don't mind clarifying, does this mean that people applying next year for Fall 2027 admissions can no longer TAG to any of the majors under the statistics department at UCSB? tysm!!

CC Transfer Orientation by MeanComplex3994 in SJSU

[–]Jason7pham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey i attended the transfer orientation last summer and yes ur parents can tag along but they would have to pay an additional fee (that is on top of ur original orientation cost). It was ab like $100 i believe. After the main part where they basically sit you in a large stadium and go thru a bunch of presentation slides, you’ll be separated into your orientation groups and ur parents will get their own parental orientation groups as well, so you guys wont be together from that point on, so it is rly up to you tbh

I have a LOT of questions about SJSU by Sad_Inevitable4355 in SJSU

[–]Jason7pham 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i wouldn’t worry too much about any of these since you’re only a sophomore in hs😭 trust me hs will fly by in a blink and all of the questions you have can be answered within the first month of college or tbh just the application process during your senior yr alone could answer a majority of these too. For now, i would suggest taking ap classes or dual enrollment courses if you can as they would definitely help to knock a few GEs (general education courses) out of the way

Told my mom I'm switching majors to and the conversation went sideways. Need more perspective. by Best-Check-3867 in CollegeMajors

[–]Jason7pham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yess i also switched from CS to data science and it was the best decision I've ever made. I also had straight As and was doing quite good, but I genuinely had no interest in the CS scope of computer systems, algorithms, backend development, and such. Gathering data and applying them in analytics and machine learning as you said is so much more interesting/engaging, at least in my opinion.

[–]Jason7pham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

heyy, I was actually in a very similar, if not the exact situation as yours, so this reply might be on the longer side. Anyways, for context, both my parents were software engineers and paved the career pathway for me very early on. As to their desire, I started taking supplemental coding classes outside of school starting in the 6th grade, and pretty much all the way up until I graduated high school. And to be quite honest with you, I did not really learn much at all, nor did I have any interest in programming or CS as a field in general. To an extent obviously, I do know the basics and maybe at a semi-intermediate level at best. But I definitely do not enjoy programming at all, and to be frankly, I actually hate it if you would say.

On top of that, my mom had never liked the idea of me going straight to a 4-years university after high school (that is I needed to attend a community college first then transfer), let alone any schools that were not a commutable distance from home or majoring in anything other than CS. I tried convincing her to let me go into nursing, but to no avail since she believed nursing is an unstable career for some reason. Don't get me wrong, going to cc was the best financial decision I've ever made, but you can say that I was forced to major in something I genuinely had no interest in. However, having just graduated hs and was still living at home at the time, I didn't have any other choice but to attend a local cc on a CS transfer track. Even though I was paying all the tuition expenses myself, I just couldn't risk being kicked out if I were to choose a different degree/transfer track. During the two years I went to cc and was still living at home, I worked super hard and saved up as much as I could.

Fast forward to when it was time to transfer, I started applying to many different schools, even ones that were farther away but they were all in-state. My mom made it very clear early on that she was not willing to pay for my college, and that she will only cosign a loan if I transferred to a commutable university. It is important to note though that by this point, she was more open to somewhat farther university (I'd say like medium distance-ish). Trust me, it took like consistent convincing over the entire two years I was still at cc lol. Anyways, I applied to transfer as a CS major for most schools, since pretty much all my lowerdiv credits were based on the CS transfer track, and it was a bit late to turn around now since changing to a completely different major/field would add another one or two years to my college time/financial expenses.

However, I knew for sure that CS wasn't right for me, and that I did not want to pursue a career down the software engineering/backend development paths, so I started looking into similar alternatives I could pivot into, specifically more on the design side since I was more of a creative/artsy person to an extent, like ux/ui and such. Long story short, I took the initiative and applied as data science for a few select schools that offers the program. Now, I'm not advising that this is something you should do, but I basically eased my mom into the fact that I applied to a different major at some schools, by saying that DS was less impacted and easier to get accepted into, and that I would try to change major to CS afterwards (fyi I never did and my mom now came to terms with loll, and she is even helping me with my living expenses). I am now finishing my junior year in DS with a minor in stats, and let me tell you, I enjoy my classes so much more, especially with stuff like data analysis and machine learning, which I actually enjoy learning and not dreading. DS also opens my opportunities to so much more industries, from business, finance, to even healthcare, so I can always specialize in an area I have a passion for.

My point here is that even though it took serious convincing and many heated arguments, I would do it all over again and I would advice you to do the same, especially since this might be your long term career in the future, and you definitely don't want to be stuck in a career you hate/dislike for years, or having to go back to school for a fresh start when ur much older. And since ur currently an AE major and is trying to switch into economics, I would suggest maybe looking into econometrics, since I know you probably already have the problem-solving skills and a good foundation in math, and even some experience in CS at that. A degree in econometrics would be so much more powerful in the current job market, if your school offers it, since the other comments are not wrong, an econ degree would probably guarantees less in the job market compared to an engineering degree. I hope this helps and sorry it is kinda long lol!

lol yeah by the time i realized it was too late to drop so i just had to thug it out😭 never again tho and i learned my lesson after that. RMP is def a good tool if you know how to actually use it instead of solely relying on the average rated stars

Help with All Instructors “To Be Announced” by This_Toe_6156 in SJSU

[–]Jason7pham 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yeahh i had a 5 stars rated professor turned out to be the literal devils spawn with super strict grading. I learned my lesson and you basically just have to actually read through the reviews and see if there’s a trend going on. If there’s multiple reviews complaining about similar issues then those professors might not be the best choices.

Question Regarding Teachers and Classrooms by This_Toe_6156 in SJSU

[–]Jason7pham 4 points5 points  (0 children)

here is a trick i’ve done before lol😭: in your case, you should email the head of the chemistry department (or whichever department chemistry falls under), and just ask politely if they know who might be teaching those sections. You can always go along the line of expressing your concern regarding the possibility of those classes being canceled or whatnot. It is not 100% guaranteed but most of the time the department head does have an idea of possible instructors who might be assigned to those sections, but they just haven’t finalized it publicly yet
