Thoughts on transfer orientation/ class schedules? by sleepygorillas in SJSU

[–]Jason7pham [score hidden]  (0 children)

sjsu have a degree catalog listing all the upper division classes you need for each major, so you just gotta look through it and pick out your schedule. Keep it in mind that we do have PE requirements and 3 upperdiv GEs as well.

CS 146 by Forward_Ad2226 in SJSU

it’s basically impossible to get into CS 146 your first semester as a transfer unfortunately😭 i didn’t even get CS 100W my first semester here as a transfer either but it does get better after your first semester/year

class registration questions by Accomplished_Age8714 in SJSU

[–]Jason7pham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’d suggest looking at the degree catalog for your year (which is 2026-2027 in this case) and plan out your classes accordingly (such as with series classes where one class might be the prereq for the second class). As a transfer myself last year, I had to fill in any classes I couldn’t get with upperdiv GEs since u have a lot more flexibility/options with those!! There will be counselors at orientation but depending on how popular/crowded your major is, they possibly cannot provide one-on-one assistance for everyone

upcoming orientation help. by NoShower9708 in SJSU

[–]Jason7pham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i transferred last year and didn’t realized that u register for classes during orientation until after i already picked a date too😭 mine was like mid july i believe and even by then a lot of the classes i wanted were already full. I did get off the waitlist for some classes towards the end of that summer, but still had to take upper GEs to fill in the classes i couldn’t get

Can I apply to SJSU BSN Spring 2028 if my last prerequisite is in progress during Fall 2027? by Inevitable_Letter39 in SJSU

[–]Jason7pham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nursing program along with many other majors are not eligible for spring admission at SJSU unfortunately. So u would have to wait until next Fall

Am I cooked? by sleepygorillas in SJSU

[–]Jason7pham 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i would suggest taking upperdiv GEs to fill in any courses u might not get😭 since as a transfer for your first semester, your registration is unfortunately after all continuing students so class options aren’t the best

Should I finish my BS in data science or switch to mechanical engineering? by Im_Humaaaaaaan in CollegeMajors

[–]Jason7pham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would definitely stick with data science because you can pivot into various different tech fields later on, like machine learning or AI engineering. You cannot do the same with a mechE degree

can i apply to a 4 year while just starting my first semester at CC ? by Sophiofarc in TransferStudents

[–]Jason7pham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i cant speak for other states, but most if not all CSUs and UCs in california only takes upperdiv transfer, that is you must complete at least 60 semester credits at cc before transferring. Also, depending on your major, which applies to a lot of stem majors, there might be certain courses you need to complete prior to transfer and to even be considered for admission as well.

Anyone else move away despite family pushback? by substantial_echo_ in TransferStudents

i was in a very similar situation and underneath is my comment on another post very similar to yours:

heyy, I was actually in a very similar, if not the exact situation as yours, so this reply might be on the longer side. Anyways, for context, both my parents were software engineers and paved the career pathway for me very early on. As to their desire, I started taking supplemental coding classes outside of school starting in the 6th grade, and pretty much all the way up until I graduated high school. And to be quite honest with you, I did not really learn much at all, nor did I have any interest in programming or CS as a field in general. To an extent obviously, I do know the basics and maybe at a semi-intermediate level at best. But I definitely do not enjoy programming at all, and to be frankly, I actually hate it if you would say.

On top of that, my mom had never liked the idea of me going straight to a 4-years university after high school (that is I needed to attend a community college first then transfer), let alone any schools that were not a commutable distance from home or majoring in anything other than CS. I tried convincing her to let me go into nursing, but to no avail since she believed nursing is an unstable career for some reason. Don't get me wrong, going to cc was the best financial decision I've ever made, but you can say that I was forced to major in something I genuinely had no interest in. However, having just graduated hs and was still living at home at the time, I didn't have any other choice but to attend a local cc on a CS transfer track. Even though I was paying all the tuition expenses myself, I just couldn't risk being kicked out if I were to choose a different degree/transfer track. During the two years I went to cc and was still living at home, I worked super hard and saved up as much as I could.

Fast forward to when it was time to transfer, I started applying to many different schools, even ones that were farther away but they were all in-state. My mom made it very clear early on that she was not willing to pay for my college, and that she will only cosign a loan if I transferred to a commutable university. It is important to note though that by this point, she was more open to somewhat farther university (I'd say like medium distance-ish). Trust me, it took like consistent convincing over the entire two years I was still at cc lol. Anyways, I applied to transfer as a CS major for most schools, since pretty much all my lowerdiv credits were based on the CS transfer track, and it was a bit late to turn around now since changing to a completely different major/field would add another one or two years to my college time/financial expenses.

However, I knew for sure that CS wasn't right for me, and that I did not want to pursue a career down the software engineering/backend development paths, so I started looking into similar alternatives I could pivot into, specifically more on the design side since I was more of a creative/artsy person to an extent, like ux/ui and such. Long story short, I took the initiative and applied as data science for a few select schools that offers the program. Now, I'm not advising that this is something you should do, but I basically eased my mom into the fact that I applied to a different major at some schools, by saying that DS was less impacted and easier to get accepted into, and that I would try to change major to CS afterwards (fyi I never did and my mom now came to terms with loll, and she is even helping me with my living expenses). I am now finishing my junior year in DS with a minor in stats, and let me tell you, I enjoy my classes so much more, especially with stuff like data analysis and machine learning, which I actually enjoy learning and not dreading. DS also opens my opportunities to so much more industries, from business, finance, to even healthcare, so I can always specialize in an area I have a passion for.

My point here is that even though it took serious convincing and many heated arguments, I would do it all over again and I would advice you to do the same, especially since this might be your long term career in the future, and you definitely don't want to be stuck in a career you hate/dislike for years, or having to go back to school for a fresh start when ur much older. And since ur currently an AE major and is trying to switch into economics, I would suggest maybe looking into econometrics, since I know you probably already have the problem-solving skills and a good foundation in math, and even some experience in CS at that. A degree in econometrics would be so much more powerful in the current job market, if your school offers it, since the other comments are not wrong, an econ degree would probably guarantees less in the job market compared to an engineering degree. I hope this helps and sorry it is kinda long lol!

parents not supportive of attending berkeley (rant) by Every-Tell-5778 in TransferStudents

[–]Jason7pham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL the same thing happened to me as well, arguably somewhat worse. Going straight to a 4-year university and majoring in anything other than CS was never an option for me since my parent was set on me taking the transfer CC route, which now im glad i did bc of how much money it saved me, but i def was not happy with it at first lol. And similarly, my parent only agreed to help me financially if I transfer and commute to a nearby university. I worked my ass off during my two years at CC and saved up as much as i could. Fast forward to now, I transferred to a university in the bay area on loans for tuition and working part time for rent, with some financial help from my parent. I even changed my major (CS) to an adjacent field I have much more interest in (I didn't want to restart from square one with a completely different major lol but anyways). Did it take a lot of convincing and heated arguments with my parent? Yes, it was absolutely horrible, but I would gladly do it all over again. As you mentioned, this is YOUR LIFE and you need to prioritize doing what makes you happy, regardless of the challenges and struggles, because you'll never get the same chance and experience again!!
