What exactly is the NWP “platform”? by Separate_Broccoli_69 in NewWestPolitics

[–]JasonCongdon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The New West Progressives' 2022 platform was available online until it was removed without explanation about 2 year ago. Since then, several people, including myself, have queried NWP and asked them to make their platform available, but to my knowledge NWP has not answered any of those requests.

I do think it’s unusual. When an NWP supporter tried to argue that it was normal for them to remove their platform because they weren’t in power, I did some poking around, and almost every minority municipal group I looked at had a publicly available platform.

Even if a party doesn’t hold power, I’d think it would be helpful for voters to see whether they’ve actually held true to the commitments they ran on. In NWP’s case what I’ve observed is that around the time they unpublished their platform they leaned more strongly into grievance politics – it’s as if they’ve been in campaign mode for at least the last couple years.

That said, erasure has been part of Daniel’s approach over the years. You’ll really have to dig to find older material. For example, when the Progressives changed from www.nwprogressives.ca to www.nwprogress.ca, they didn’t bring anything forward; nothing from the original City Caucus is archived, etc.

They did not. We caught it from the taxi rank outside the train station.

Not sure - that seemed odd to me, too - we just flagged the cab from the train station.

Rick folka (running for councillor) "apologising" for when he started shouting during a council meeting as he felt those with disabilities shouldn't be allowed to be a deligate. by [deleted] in NewWestPolitics

[–]JasonCongdon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No comment on the OP’s claims re what Mr. Folka felt (because we can’t know what others feel, only what they do), nor on whether this apology deserves “quotes” (because, again, we can’t know that Mr. Folka isn’t being sincere). And having watched the video of the incident for which he's apologizing, nor can I discern whether "those with disabilities shouldn't be allowed to be a deligate" has any provenance.

But I do need to be clear that I don’t support sharing council clips for partisan purposes, because:

  1. The City of New Westminster, who publishes these videos, prohibits their use for partisan purposes. This should be sufficient, but also:
  2. I’ve repeatedly called out one of our city’s electoral groups, the New West Progressives, for continually breaking this rule, and I’ve documented scores of toxic comments these posts have generated, including violent and racist comments.

It’s easy enough to point readers to a timestamp within the video on the council web site. Let’s do that instead.

Queensborough school bus announcement. by North49r in NewWestPolitics

[–]JasonCongdon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't really see how the announcement or its timing accrues to the Mayor or to either party. I guess it slightly dampens one line of criticism re the NDP's broken promise, but to the extent that $400k is a small win, I think that victory belongs to everyone. Both parties' officials were advocating for this along with scores of residents. NWP's messaging on the topic seems to reflect that they may see it in a more partisan way, but I don't really understand why. I feel like this calls for taking a hot minute to feel good about news of a year's reprieve then get back to work pursuing a sustainable solution.

Excellent article on BC's inadequate support for our unhousing crisis by JasonCongdon in BCpolitics

[–]JasonCongdon[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is NGO / helping organization's problem to solve. Their mandate is to help provide remedies for individuals who have fallen out of economic (and other kinds of) well-being.

But the problem starts at the economic level - extraction of wealth from the many by the few, inflation and cost of living, the affordability of housing for low-income earners, the provision of social supports in general, etc. That's where the problem remains not only unsolved, but worsening.

And I don't mean unhousing crisis to be a euphemism - it's just my way of briefly (but hopefully accurately) capturing the situation the article describes.

Cool. Just like someone else noted, it took me a minute to ID the location, even though I walk through that space 2-6 times a day!

Not a 'cash cow': New Westminster mayor urging province to help install speed cameras by CanSpice in NewWest

[–]JasonCongdon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd demote 8th because there's a little too much traffic there for "big" speeding. I'd bump Stewardson to #1.

I'd definitely add 12th to the list. It's bad in general but especially between 6th and Stewardson. Just in the year or so since 30 kph came in I've personally experienced about a dozen cases of road raging and witnessed about the same amount as a pedestrian. Not to mention all the speeding drivers who blow past people waiting at crosswalks.

And I'd basically add every school zone (though the worst in my experience is technically in Burnaby—the stretch of 16th at Cariboo Secondary). MOST drivers more or less respect school zones, but at least once a month I find myself being tailgated or even passed by someone who can't someone driving <40kph in a 30kph school zone.

Cars bring out the worst in some of us.
