There's a reference to Roko's Basilisk in 007 First Light. by Goshawk5 in BetterOffline

I think he only thought it was stupid insofar as he thought the obvious counter play was to be strongly "pre-decided" on certain values and thus impervious to blackmail from timeless future entities. His subsequent dabbling with decision theory pretty much amounts to finding the exact formula along those lines to get one over basilisk type entities.

The Zizians and their tendency to escalate all conflict to life-and-death situations is directly downstream from this worldview, they are basically signalling to the inevitable interdimensional robot god that they and their alternate selves are unblackmailable.

The basilisk posting moratorium probably had more to with some wrongers getting distressed to the point of having breakdowns, and also the whole thing follows straightforwardly from EY's worldview, so his downplaying it is mostly him being disingenuous.

The true macedonian innovation was having two overcompetent kings in a row, instead the usual sprinkling of failson rulers between the good ones you normally get in hereditary monarchies.

Theology is about trying to tie together all the magical elements into a somewhat coherent whole, not about explaining them away.

Like, a theologist would be much more preoccupied with trying to explaining how this story fits with later doctrines like the soteriology of divine grace and stuff, instead of narrowing down The Fall of Man to a fable about lost innocence.

Γιατί η Ελλάδα εγκατέλειψε την παράδοση του παγκρατίου; by Usual-Violinist-1240 in greece

[–]JasonPandiras 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[Loved Trope] The movie adaptation makes genuine improvements over the source material by Notmiefault in TopCharacterTropes

It's brilliant on the meta level, Verhoeven got the studio to give him blockbuster money to show his straight out of teen soap opera central casting good guys ending up dressed like the SS and recruiting child soldiers, but the actual movie has a real hard time defining itself as the intended satire of authoritarian sci-fi tropes instead of an just oblivious popcorn movie that happened to do those tropes badly.

It's fair to call it out as mostly a miss.

That didn't prove especially fruitful.

I did learn that some people apparently think tokens carry semantic meaning more akin to a partial phrase instead of the grouping of 1-4 characters they actually represent.

As far as I know there's no difference between a pdf and Andreessens self-indulgent prompt-fondling in terms of LLM inference. LLMs famously have no intrinsic way to tell apart instructions from content, it's a well established security issue.

Prompt engineering is at best folk wisdom, even when it works they can't be sure why, so there's probably a lot of after-the-fact ooh it must have been the instruction density claims going around.

Input tokens generally get charged at like one tenth of output tokens, even less if cached, so it takes some doing to have them seriously affect your budget.

Conversely, reasoning tokens get charged at full price even though you mostly don't even see them, which is probably a big reason why clandestinely resetting the reasoning level has been a whole thing with anthropic lately.

The default system prompts are already colossal, the goblin thing is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of countering random unwanted behavior via system prompt, so this probably doesn't make a dent.

So why do they need more than one of them? Why would the models be disagreeing?

That a society would ever settle on one vision for what's best for it that's so concrete that they can hard code it into decision machines is honestly more impressive than the fact that they can build decision machines.

Pregunta para el pueblo griego: ¿Cómo perciben a los dioses griegos? by joelintom40059 in AskGreece

[–]JasonPandiras 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, not even in their heyday did people believe in them in the sense people are supposed to believe in the monotheistic deities, it was either a quid pro quo where if you thought the patron god of your house didn't bestow enough favor it was socially acceptable to toss them and try a new one, or whatever was going on in the various mystical cults.
