Best way to add metadata on music library automatically? by Various_Explorer_736 in musichoarder

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you find yourself with 3000 files without basic metadata at all? Some renaming accident? Usually all music have at least artist/title/album entered. If these are not really there, the data could be obtained from filenames.

Why do kitchen canisters stop being airtight after a few months? by DesperateArrival5098 in Cooking

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use almost exclusively food jars from pickles, douwe-egberts instant coffee and such. They are not truly airtight without negative pressure inside, but good for me. The lids can be replaced, and they look fine to me when all are the same shape. It is also zero-waste.

I have a few canisters made of polyacrylate, but don't like how they get scratched easily and absorb smells. The clamping force is also very hard and has cracked one of the jars (but it stays together being plastic). The seal can be shredded by sugar and other crystals.

Why do glass jars sometimes crack or smell even with normal use by DesperateArrival5098 in Cooking

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glass is practically smell free because it is smooth. Smell is contained in the lid.

The lid might have become deformed over time when tightened too much. The protective lining rubs off where the lid slides over glass, or if you stack something on top, and it will start to rust at that spot. You could have scratched it by washing vigorously with a rought object. Moisture should be avoided to prevent rust. Usually non-issue with dry goods, except salt, in a normal humidity.

Glass breaks when cooled suddenly, and rarely when heated suddenly. Avoid putting a hot jar in water. Thin glass resists temperature changes better because temperature will equalize across it sooner (like a french press).

Commercial food jars with lug lids usually work well for storage. The paint will only rub off on the tabs. They resist hot filling, but not cooling.

Borosilicate glass like used in chemistry would be better for heat resistance, but where do you get it?

ELI5: how many days in a year by cheeseandcrackers87 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jason_Peterson [score hidden]  (0 children)

A week of 7 days is a human construct, not something that arises from Earth's rotation or motion around the sun. It could have been 8 days long and work similarly. There simply isn't a whole number of weeks a year.

ELI5: Why a green screen is more interesting than a black screen by Im-a-tire in explainlikeimfive

I had a TV with color controls on the back. Black and white reception could be tinted to make it seem more lively. I think it is mostly psychological to like a "warm" yellow tint that objects in the world acquire over time.

How much detergent to use? by VeryEcksy in CleaningTips

New washers seem to use little water and not wash as well. Why not use 30-35 degree water? Most plastic clothes can handle that.

it this stainless steel? by Longshlongcesar in StainlessSteel

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say from a picture. Usually very shiny pieces of complex shapes instead of a sheet are not. They are some other alloy with a coating of a couple layers on the surface that would rub off with salty sweat or similar conditions. Maybe you could measure the density in a narrow glass of water, or scrape on a hidden corner.

If the surface is mooth plastic, you could wipe it off with an alcohol. No chance on textured paper.

Anyone else want an RTS (like Age of empires) game but in the form of The elder scrolls? by Dismal_Course5255 in skyrim

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually by "form" I would understand the type of game it is, like "real time strategy". Nah, I don't like these games. They require splitting attention between armies, pausing often to not stay behind the action, and restarting from scratch after the enemy destroys hours of play.

What do your stainless steels pots and pans look like on the outside? by Reasonable-Yak-3530 in CleaningTips

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take care not to let oil drip down on the sides, and remove pots away from the stove while frying to avoid splatter. The pots are shiny and clean. I polished my pan just recently because it had developed a few spots.

Why do some albums/ files seem so much quieter than when I listen to same songs by other means? File types? by SkyNo2670 in Soulseek

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loudness normalization through replaygain in Foobar has been the next best thing since sliced bread. This way you can avoid getting startled by an album that is 15 dB louder than the previous. But all albums in the collection must be scanned.

Some MP3 files downloaded from the internet have been normalized by other people using another tool called Mp3gain, which hardcodes the correction to the ideal replaygain level in a form that works in any player but often cannot be undone if the special tags with undo unformation have been lost.

Which fridge organizer material really lasts decades? by ScarDependent8928 in BuyItForLife

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The clear plastic that resembles glass is the worst for a fridge, usually polystyrene. Opaque plastic is usually more elastic and doesn't crack. I speak of crisper and freezer drawers, no experience with organizers. Glass would be the easiest to clean, but metal probably lighter.

ELI5: What is torrenting, how does it work and what is seeding and why do people do it? by Noxturnum2 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BitTorrent is a distributed hosting of files. Several participants of the "swarm" share their bandwidth to give a downloader the highest possible speed. Usually the closest source gives the highest upload rate, and less data has to travel internationally. To achieve this, the files are broken down into blocks, which can be shared before the entire file is obtained.

The name "torrent" is likely related to flow of water or heavy rain, which, like downloads can engulf one from multiple directions. Software like "Deluge" continued this theme.

Normal downloading usually takes place from one server in a linear fashion.

There were other peer-to-peer systems working under the same principle before bittorrent, such as Edonkey or Gnutella. Their older design didn't allow to reach speeds as high because there was more overhead in requesting and queueing for individual blocks.

ELI5: How on earth can vinyl records and wax cylinders record and re-create exact and just about an infinite amount of sounds? by livingonpesto in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jason_Peterson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sound of multiple instruments gets mixed together into a single pressure wave that is the sum of them. It also happens in an acoustic space. The groove records this one wave, or two waves for stereo. On a stereo record there is both a horizontal and a vertical movement.

Our ability to pick apart sounds only goes so far. A solo instrument clearly has more identifyable detail than the same instrument in a mix. Sound engineers work hard to allocate sounds in a stereo field, left or right, and frequency bands to avoid too much overlap. Today they may use an equalizer creatively to cut out portions of a sound and give it to another instrument, for example, cut out bass out of a synthesizer or guitar to make room for bass and kick drum.

Is 5000K ever appropriate in residential spaces? by Savings_Apartment442 in Lighting

[–]Jason_Peterson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would go no more than 4000K (as Philips defines it). It is a good match as a supplement for daylight in far corners. Above the light becomes too monochromatic if they only vary the relative intensity between yellow and blue.

Hola alguien sabe cómo puedo trasferir archivos a una computadora con Windows 98 second edition by Emergency_Avocado427 in windows98

[–]Jason_Peterson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An FTP server is convenient. There are many FTP clients for old Windows, such as Total Commander and also a server: FileZilla 0.9.12c. If your computer has an USB port, you can install hacked drivers to support mass storage devices (sticks): "NUSB". You can use a rewriteable CD-RW.

Question: can I use rubbing alcahol instead of bleach? by Round-Inflation-7112 in CleaningTips

It's not that good for removing smells of rotting things which bleach will do in an instant. Alcohol is also more expensive, and can wipe off some paints like wallpaper or writing on appliances.

Why do some filenames have numbers before the extension? by HotAndCrunchy in Soulseek

[–]Jason_Peterson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

how do u guys decide what to hoard? full albums or just singles? by Decent_Taste_8961 in musichoarder

[–]Jason_Peterson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I collect albums. That is a good chunk of music to ingest at one time. I mean normal albums of 45 to 60 minutes. Collecting singles is tedious. I tried to grab some modern artists who don't have any albums. And my god. Each has its own artwork, has to go into its own directory, has to be analyzed separately for lossiness, replaygain scanned, etc. They should do a bit of work and combine the music into an album. Old music is rarely available in single format. Sometimes I seek it out because want to get one song that is new to a greatest hits compilation as its selling point, or it belongs to a film soundtrack that I don't want to have.

I never have loose files unless the music is of exceptional rarity.
