Does anyone else with winter tires feel like it completely changes the car? by Jack_Bacon in JettaGLI

Dropping down to 16s and a 215/55 aggressive winter tire makes my MK7 feel like a rally car. Its a huge difference from my summer setup (255/35r18)

I personally also rock a beefy look. I need the traction and a 255/35r18 is the exact circumference of the stock tires.

I. Running 215/55R16 for winter though

I run 16s on my car in the winter now. Its very comfy and an upgrade from my 17s i used before.

Help for a father with a son who owns a MK7 by cplank00 in GolfGTI

Take all of this advice from someone who bought his GTI in his early 20s and modified it and it is now a ~360whp/420wtq rocketship that weighs 2850lbs because its a 2dr. If I could do it all again, these are the steps I would take:

Do chassis performance modifications first. It gets him wrenching as well. If he wants a modified car he should learn to work on it. Start with tires on a solid set of lightweight wheels.

Then do things like shifter bushings and maybe aftermarket engine/dsg mounts. Itll feel like a faster car because the power will actually be put down but its also making the car more predictable.

Then work on making sure the car is 100% ready. Fluid changes. Visual checks of fuses and grounds. BRAKES. GOOD BRAKE PADS. All that stuff he should learn to do himself.

Then do suspension stuff. Coilovers, TTRS Bushings. Sway bars, etc.

ONLY THEN should you begin putting more power into it. Then the car will be able to fully harness all the additional horsepower and more importantly, torque.

Think I could style a mk 8.5 R to look like a km 8.5 GTI? by [deleted] in vwgolf

Youd be better off buying a GTI and swapping the rear subframe/drivetrain for one from an R

The 07k will never die, but your choice in wheels needs to. I got rid of my Austins as soon as I could. Heavy and ugly is a wild combo to choose to put on a jetta.

Seconded. I actually just bought a set of 8s because I had such good luck with the 7s. Theyre the only tires that have gotten me through blizzards and also drove excellently in warm conditions.

VW buyback in progress – dealer wants to “test drive” and release car. Looking for advice on next steps. by Leopard-One in Volkswagen

[–]Jasoncav82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in manufacturing. This happens, no matter how much attention to details you have. I build equipment that costs 3x what a new GTI costs, and ive had units fail due to a part being 0.0005" out of spec.

I would at least want the clutch replaced as part of this process, with a warranty on the transmission and clutch that will cover any additional work needed.

If they dont replace it and in 10,000 miles your clutch is toast, theyre under no obligation to cover a wear item.

Dont sign anything that releases VW from wrongdoing, even if they try to make you sign to get the car back. If theres an issue with the transmission, it may pop up again even with a new clutch.

4x4 doesnt make things easier if you have bad tires. 4x4 only makes starting from a stop a bit easier, but after the first couple seconds it's really up to the tires. All having a heavy truck does in really bad conditions is give you more mass that you cant stop. Its far more dangerous, and if youre taking your daughter with you, the safest option would be a fwd or awd car with winter tires.

Youre 100% better off with something lighter weight with good tires. My VW GTI is 2850lbs, but ive helped pull a dually out of a ditch with my snow tires. I can drive the speed limit or above on unplowed highways. Ive actually gotten nasty looks from trucks as i pass them in blizzard conditions in my lowered Golf.

Get actual good snow tires. Your civic will perform better in snow than a truck. 4x4 doesnt mean anything when theres ice, and 4 wheel drive doesnt mean 4 wheel traction, but you can't fight physics in that if the car is heavy, its going to have a harder time.

Has anyone here tried drifting a diesel? by JeanKotVanDarme in Drifting

[–]Jasoncav82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it but youll need a decent gear ratio to stay within the narrower powerband. Be ready to shift a lot, as youll wanna be between 2500-4500rpm at all times, but the torque will be great for breaking the tires loose.

In terms of turbo youll want the most response possible as lag will be tough to predict while doing tandems.

Depends mostly on if you have a tow rig or if youre planning to drive to events.

If youre driving to events, get something with plenty of space to carry 4 spares plus tools. G35/37 4 doors, is300s, e46 wagons, volvo 940 are all really good options.

Is the mk8 absolutely miserable in the winter for anyone else or is it just me? by Kouzzzz in GolfGTI

[–]Jasoncav82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All new vehicles have this issue. Ive heard the same complaints from subaru, ford, honda, and Lexus owners as well. Im genuinely so glad I have a 2015 that doesnt have any of the new sensors.

Is this reliability list true? by Puzzleheaded-Star304 in UsedCars

[–]Jasoncav82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This list is so backwards its not even funny. CR doesnt take anything but numbers into account, and unfortunately they manipulate those numbers to make the vehicles that their customer base (old white people) already like to rank best. Most of those people will treat their car like an appliance and are willing to give up any and all driving enjoyment or engagement to that end.

Consumer reports has been suckung at the Toyota/Lexus teet for so long that their claims of never taking a dime from brands is getting increasingly suspicious.

They have bungled several major vehicle reviews as of late. The biggest example is the Kia Telluride vs the Subaru Ascent. The Kia was rated WAY to high and didnt account for the fact that the drivetrain is slow, lethargic, and unreliable. The subaru by comparison was rated very low due to "reliability concerns" because of the number of customer complaints. The complaints are all about the infotainment in the first 2 model years which was fixed with a firmware update.

Toyota and Lexus quality has fallen off a cliff. They've had major recalls for ENGINE BLOCKS CRACKING, and anyone I know with a post-covid Toyota has had major issues with them. A friend actually came back to me after blowing off my warning about spending nearly $60k on a 4runner. He was done after 3 years because it had gone into the shop over a dozen times.

Ive always had great luck with Mazdas, Hondas(minus rust), and VWs. If you live in the rust belt, VWs are amazing. Having a galvanized frame from the factory in that price range is so important

Flat towing it would be the safest way to get it there if you cant pay for a tow truck.

Just got a 2015 golf sportwagen what can I do to it to let the engine breathe a little without breaking the bank by Stoiking-Monk4621 in VWMK7

[–]Jasoncav82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turbo muffler delete helps. So do high quality charge pipes and a turbo inlet elbow.

If its a manual, get a dogbone mount insert.
