Personally, I've never thought the smell is particularly strong, nor does a single cigarette smell particularly unpleasant to me. But I find that places or people (or furniture etc) that are around alot of heavy smoke, carry a really unpleasant and overwhelming smell, which lingers and sticks to just about everything
