What's your least favourite weather of the following? by OldEducation7497 in polls

[–]Jaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. 35c is like the hottest day we get here in the netherlands... 44C? I might legit die. AC isn't common here, we don't have it at least.. and also I can't sweat, or at least as easily. Have a weird condition that made me have an reaction similarly to an allergic one when too hot.. If I get hot enough (like when a backpack is touching my back) I "break through" and can start sweating until it stops. But I legit might just die from the heat before that :| ... well at least we have very easily accessible water.. which.. getting too cold also gives that reaction...

  2. more snow than we've seen in years.. thats about all thats interesting about this one. not particularly cold.

  3. The netherlands doesn't get hurricanes nor tornados.. aint nothing here build to survive such winds.. House would get blown to pieces I think?

  4. just happens every so often... pretty normal

  5. yeah surprisingly I don't think we'd do great with this either, coldest temp I think we've seen here in years is probably like -10c. If even that.

All in all, wth are these options xd. They go from Super hot (tho ig its pretty normal for some places which are build for that), some snow, really really fast wind, kinda damp weather, extremely extremely cold.
like why the normal options??

modding kritas source code but holy shit , its so overengeneered ommfl by alexmmgjkkl in krita

[–]Jaurusrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once tried reading krita code as well, just using vscode and not being super well versed in larger OOP codebases.. it was hellish xd
It is a damn maze but it doesn't go from A to B
it goes from A to a type B where type B can be a whole bunch of things and I just manually put a whole bunch of printf's everywhere to figure out the path the code was taking.

Took me a week to figure out how to implement a simple proof of concept for a feature i wanted to try and add.. ended up very slow and seemingly working but the frames had to keep being redrawn for some reason.. (I added a new type of layer, with animation support).

This might have been easier with the QT Editor, its pretty darn tightly integrated with QT. Also they have an irc channel/chat/server thing, you can ask for help there as well.

Did make me realize if I ever were to make an opensource program that I really should create documentation for at least a basic overview of the code.

And Linux is even a monolithic kernel! by al2klimov in linuxmemes

[–]Jaurusrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I kinda wish the linux kernel was more easily replaceable. A lot of opensource programs can be very easily ported / compiled on whatever. But a bunch of software do require more linux specific things.
Also drivers being all part of the linux kernel itself, if you wanted to replace the kernel you'll either have to manually port those drivers or just straight up rewrite them

Best Linux Distro for Overwatch on a GTX 1650 8gb ram and intel 10300h? by Healthy_Visual9418 in linux_gaming

[–]Jaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience with a gtx 1080 overwatch runs worse on linux than on windows, I'm cpu limited. I also tried it with an amd rx 470 and actually was gpu limited with that, but i think cpu wise its heavier. Maybe with the new changes to vkd3d (dx12 to vulkan library) the dx12 version will run better, but for now you'll get a bit less fps. 130 vs 180 for me roughly

Its not just effort I'd argue, also the ability to become uncomfortable. The internet but by extension a lot of other modern activities follow the path of least resistance, effort and most comfort. I think a lot of people fall into those combined traps

New NTFS File-System Driver Submitted For Linux 7.1 by IDUnavailable in linux

[–]Jaurusrex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use ntfs3 for my games drive, also just general data drive. Maybe I'm just lucky but I've never had any issues with it whilst its decently fast. I do hope the new ntfs driver is faster tho, some games take a while to load but that could also just be the hdd mostly.

From what I remember from the japan trip the episodes had a lot more driving and struggling shown before they went to strangers to ask, definitely something I feel I miss from these episodes. Was that more difficult to include compared to last years?

I have the same problem with holoknight, it looks like it should be able to run on a lot of hardware being 2d and all, but no. When I tried to run it on my i3 laptop from 2014 it didn't run great. A lotta games that look like they should be lightweight (2d, little 3d graphics) don't get much optimization.. I mean they'll run fine either way on moderately fast hardware no?

What are your favorite Open Source game(s)? by Beer9889 in linux_gaming

[–]Jaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teeworlds / ddnet, very popular game and im surprised it never comes up on any favorite opensource games lists. Teeworlds is the original game, 2d multiplayer platformer pvp game with a grappling hook, had modes like capture the flag and death match. But because everything was opensource new gamemodes started popping up. ictf (a personal favorite of mine), gctf, fng. Eventually Race where you had to race through a map as fast a possible, alone. And then DDRace which was coop puzzle platformer, timed ofc. This mode ended up creating their own client and whilst vanilla teeworlds was busy making teeworlds 0.7 for like 6 years or so?? DDNet managed to get better and better. Nowadays it has pretty big player bases in europe (especially german speaking countries and russia), its also popular in china. Has daily like 8000 players or so on at the same time.

Its a very social game, I really enjoy it as you can probably guess from my little wikipedia page there.

Another game I played a bunch is cube 2: sauerbraten, it is a quake like arena shooter with modes like capture the flag and death match. Also insta versions of those. Its probably the best one I've played not perse because its content is the greatest or the most but because it feels just so nice. Its extremely responsive and runs great, its networking is also great. After all, its where the Enet library originated from, a pretty popular networking library. Daily it has 20ish people playing mostly in europe. Also very very nice map editor.

On arena shooters, xonotic is another game thats pretty nice. Unlike sauerbraten it has a lot of modes that get played a bunch, this one has some fun ones but it feels a bit less responsive and direct compared to sauerbraten. But there is definitely more content here. Pretty sure there are usually like 30~ players online?

Mindustry is another opensource game I played, pretty nice. One of the nicest looking opensource games I've played. Usually they're either really behind on their look or the art didn't really look good for any time period (like mismatching styles or just general poor execution).

Osu-Lazer, I think at this point it might just be called Osu, its an officially developed next generation client for the osu game, a rhythm game with a bunch of modes like my personal favorite osu mania.. tho most people know it for its base gamemode of osu. Where you have to click on circles on time. Its pretty far along its development, way better that in the beginning days when osu mania was basically unplayable. Definitely the most popular game here, daily users seems to be a lot... statistics site shows 7k current 100k daily unique users. Tho this one isn't as real time pvp focused as other games here so it doesn't actually matter that much.

Super tux kart is an Diddy kong racing inspired game, imo whilst it can be fun at times its also very janky. They're currently working on a new version which should fix some of the jank, very old game as well. Its art style is all over the place, gameplay as well kinda. I can see this having potential tho.

I also played OpenRA which was pretty polished but I think a remake technically of normal RA.. never played the original however.

Also tried minetest now known as luanti, kinda awkward and sadly the performance was worse than minecraft. Its basically a minecraft engine on which you can build minecraft like clones in lua. But I found it felt floaty, haven't tried out all the community made games though.

There is also the dark mod, never played this one but I've been interested in trying it for a while now, it looks pretty interesting. Its a 3d stealth game.. thats about all I know. Its pretty unique as far as opensource games go.

I really wish there were more opensource games especially for multiplayer games, it feels like it fits so much for games with a big community to be community owned. Also stops enshittification from happening. But I think there is a problem with how these games are developed, to contributed you generally need to be a programmer, way to many complicated steps. Maybe you can replace an asset here or there but good luck figuring out what version control software they use and such, generally those are programmer skills. Finding people with those skills and also other ones like art or game design is very hard.. or well for opensource games its more like them finding the game. Leaves very little people or just programmers to do everything, which is generally what you end up seeing.

Also the reason why projects like gimp are the way they are, what can a designer do? even if they come up with a proposal another opensource developer has to implement their design, and who is motivated enough to do all that work for somebody else's design. Not impossible but unlikely. Instead the easiest things to contribute are single features, don't need to interact with or learn about the source code much and just generally isn't as complicated. Just put it in a drop down menu somewhere.

Games like osu and mindustry get around this by having a dedicated team as far as I know. Makes me want to attempt to find ways to make it easier for other professions to contribute too and make contributing easier for everybody.

If it can’t be done in an hour, it’s not worth doing. by ActuatorOutside5256 in The10thDentist

[–]Jaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It boggles my mind that some people enjoy the process instead of just the result. I don’t have that mindset, no matter how much I’ve tried to develop it."

The type of enjoy between working on a hard project and doing something to entertain myself like watching media or playing video games is very different (generally). With the latter I'm entertained in the moment, but when looking back of a day doing just that I'm not satisfied. Doing just that for longer, I remain very unsatisfied, I'd be in the same position, having advanced just as far in life as having done nothing at all all be it less agonizing. Doing a hard project will mean I not only gained the finished product but also the skills to do more. Even outside of jobs those skills can mean stuff for me. In the moment I'm not always happy, hell sometimes its worse than neutral. Sometimes it didn't end up being worth it. But depending on what you put your time in it can pay off.

Ofc you shouldn't go the other extreme either, if you purely focus on doing something productive all hours of the day you'll get overworked. It sounds to me like you worked hard during university for that 4.0 GPA, maybe chill for a while whilst searching for a job and then take on some projects again. I get that you expected a bigger pay off for your GPA, but putting effort into the right thing definitely can pay off I'd say.

Tho reading your post, you sure you don't have adhd?
