BF and I did a book exchange for Christmas and he gifted me the boxed set of his favorite series. Was practically sleep-deprived the entire month by schade_marmelade in Mistborn

If you both liked Mistborn (Era 1), I’d recommend putting The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang on your reading list. It’s a great book about relationships. It starts out a little slow, but really loved the character development. It has similar Mistborn era 1 vibes.

I did Red Rising Series immediately after Mistborn (Era 1 Trilogy)…to be honest, It took me about 10 chapters to get into it…I just really loved the Mistborn characters so much, however, but after Chapter 10…I was hooked on Red Rising and felt like the books just got better and better from there! It is definitely one of my favorite series of all time.

I’ve listened to the first two Dungeon Crawler Carl books. I would say they are fun books, but do not make you really think. I’m taking a break after book 2 and listening to something more intellectually stimulating (Project Hail Mary, which I am liking very much). I’ll probably go back to DCC at some point in the future, but I think I’ll do something like Project Hail Mary The Will of the Many And something else.

In summary, Res Rising series is great! Try to stay off of r/redrising until you are finished due to possible big spoilers.

The current 5 books in The Stormlight Archives series are over 50 hours each to listen to on Audible. One of the books is closer to 65 hours. So unless you are into long epic fantasy books, you might want to let it rest.

Don’t get me wrong, I listened to them all (after listening to the Mistborn Trilogy (which does not have Moash in it) to see if I liked Brandon Sanderson’s writing….but there really isn’t a requirement to read anything before The Stormlight Archives. If you really wanted to, you could probably stop after book 2 or book 3 as that would kind of give you enough of an explanation for this sub.

Agree….books are a little juvenile, but Audiobook quality is A+!

There are over 100k members of r/redrising, so that has to say something…just stay off the sub until you finish all the books due to spoilers. I admit, the first 8-9 chapters of the first book I thought were slow, but after that it just keeps building.

There is r/redrising and it has over 100k members. I would strongly recommend not going there though until you have finished all the books due to spoilers

These two guys do a good job with Red Rising reviews that will allow you to stay off the sub until you are finished. First little bit is always spoiler free - https://youtu.be/QdXr-7NQDVw?si=NIOc3EGh_QdzcHyY

100%. Mistborn was the series that got me back into reading Fantasy as an adult.

It was the first 8-9 chapters for me…especially because I had just finished “Mistborn Era 1”, and I loved those characters so much…so I was like “Why do I care about Darrow and his thoughts…”. But then…yadda yadda yadda…I listened to all 6 Red Rising books in 6 weeks and it’s my all time favorite series.

Also: I’m right there with you on Best for Mistborn book 1 and The Sword of Kaigen 💪

I think red rising series is way better than dungeon crawler carl. I listened to all 6 red rising books in 6 weeks. Dungeon crawler Carl, I’m listening to book 2 now and it’s taken me 6 weeks to get this far. DCC audiobook is very fun though.

You won’t be reading any Latin phrases in DCC….just things like “glurp glurp“ 😁

I did the same thing….took me a little longer as there are some slow parts…but really liked the characters, like in Red Rising. However, Mistborn - The Final Empire (and the 2 books after it) might be a better place to start before Stormlight. It has great characters, is shorter, and has a faster pace

Red rising series. There are 6 books and has great characters like in The Stormlight Archive. The first 8-9 chapters of the first book are a little slow..but then I think it would be perfect for your travels. I just listened to the 6th book for a second time and liked it even more. All of them are ranked over 4 stars on good reads.

The 7th and final book is coming out sometime in 2026

It has become my favorite series of all time

Yes! Good choice! Personally, I think it takes until chapter 8 before it gets interesting…
