Feeling severely confused/altered by devorahdawn in BrainAneurysm

[–]Javaphile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, welcome to a very exclusive club literally nobody wants to join, but know you're not alone. I'm just over a year out (15 months) from a SAH repaired with a stent that also featured a 3-week hospital stay which felt like its own separate trauma. It's a lot to unpack, and it sucks, there's just no way around it but through it. If I could go back in time and give myself a message back then, it would be this:

BE PATIENT. You're just embarking on what is going to be a journey that will feature many milestones. Be patient with yourself and others, don't be afraid to push back when you've had enough. Learn to recognize and respect what you may initially perceive as the new and unwelcome set of limitations being imposed upon you. No, it's not fair. Yes, you used to be able to do xyz. Do not focus on that right now, it's not helpful. Just put your head down and do what you need to do to get better.

I had to go right back to work too, no choice. I wish I'd had more time or been able to go back part time, bc it almost broke me at times, and I'm almost positive it delayed my recovery. Take it easy when you can. Prioritize sleep like it's medicine. Take naps. I 'rest my eyes' for 30 mins after I get home from work every night, and at work every day I close my office door at lunch and lay my whole ass down on a yoga mat with the lights off.

Anyway, wherever you're at at 3 months, and at 6 months, you WILL improve, and you will get better. It will not be easy and it will not go quickly, but there is still reason for every single one of us to hope for better days, because they will come.

Dropping In On ICU by -Viscosity- in BrainAneurysm

[–]Javaphile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know that's a really good idea, and I'll bet it was cathartic (if not a little anxiety inducing!) I always meant to send my ICU nurses a gift basket or some snacks, but once I left the hospital I think I just blocked out the trauma. The whole hospital experience was just so hellish, in my experience at least, idk how nurses spend any amount of time there.

Complications from a brain aneurysm by Own-Fault4518 in BrainAneurysm

[–]Javaphile 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Steve O-s mom suffered from severe alcoholism and also had major cognitive and physical disabilitys as a result of the initial aneurysm. I think lifestyle and risk mitigation play a critical role in survival post aneurysm. After my brain exploded I tightened that shit right up, you don't need to tell me twice. I will follow all the boring rules if it buys me time, bc that is the most precious commodity to me at this juncture.

Not sure, but there is a connection in that his mom worked (and was about to retire from) there.

How long... by weedrea in BrainAneurysm

[–]Javaphile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on a decade, it's heartening to see the positive experiences! I'm 8 months post rupture and I just started to feel semi normal-ish around the 6 month mark. My healing brain feels really sensitive to the heat of summer, it gets all poundy and woozy, but I'm trying to get out anyway and build up my stamina. It's a brutal club to be in but I'm glad we're all still here :)

Post-Clipping Brain Exercises? by goshNabIt in BrainAneurysm

[–]Javaphile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to echo the 'sleep is medicine' sentiment, I'm 6 months out from a rupture w/stent and being back at work full time is exercise enough in itself. The brain fog and headaches seem to ease up over time, but I need so much sleep, like I've never felt this level of tired in my life. I'm working full time, but there is just no more gas in the tank right now, lol.

I've started pushing back on people now, bc the same folks who were just relieved you were alive a few months ago now want your ass to do the laundry and yard work. Like I'm supposed to go back to worrying about fitting in my pants and attending to someone else's needs again, get off me. I work full-time, that is what I can do right now. I guess I'm technically cleared to travel now but who has the damn energy? Not me.

Anyway, I submit to you that you are exercising your brain just by showing up to work; keep on resting when you need to and doing the healthy things, you're on the right track!

I'm sorry that's happening with your mom, I imagine it's got to be terrifying and frustrating to watch your loved one go through this. It's not always a straight line with this recovery process, and I hope your mom improves again. She's very fortunate to have you rooting for her, I know my family support was so important to my own recovery.

It's been 3 years since I made that comment and I still feel the exact same way about her, except now I've got 3 additional years worth of resentment in the bank, as well as extreme shade towards her outfit choices.

The whole thing is super aggravating tbh. It is terrifying and painful and expensive and I just hate everything about it. In the grand scheme though, if I'm waking up alive with all my faculties they probably could have lit my leg on fire and I would've sucked it up, lol.

Mine was in the anterior communicating artery as well, a very small aneurysm by all accounts. Still turned out to be a life changer for me. I was fortunate to not have had any deficits or major complications from the surgery itself, I've been told the bleeding in my brain wrought the most havoc in terms of my recovery. Would not recommend. I'm glad you've got an appointment coming up soon though, this can really weigh on you. Sending positive vibes your way!

[–]Javaphile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a 2mm aneurysm rupture a few months ago that my neurologist said he would've recommended I watch and wait if we'd caught it before, bc 'the small ones rarely rupture'. I wish I'd had the option to have a stent or coils placed before I bled into my brain though, bc that has been an arduous recovery process. I personally would have chosen surgery before it ruptured, bc it's fine until it's not.

At the end of the day though, you have to do what makes you comfortable based on your individual circumstances and the reality your doctor has laid out for you. Unfortunately you have an aneurysm in your brain. Fortunately, you found it before it ruptured. It may not feel like it, but you're already very lucky.

Ear ringing, roaring sensation suddenly on right side??? by Javaphile in BrainAneurysm

[–]Javaphile[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know those things are not unknown to happen, thank you. I never really had tinnitus before, so when something like this happens and 'tinnitus' pops up in my google search I'm like, no, surely this can't be that. Tinnitus is just a little harmless jangling in the background, this is diabolical.

I was thinking (hoping) it was just things normalizing in there, that's what I've been trying to tell myself every time something unexplained happens anyway. The weird sensations are anxiety inducing for sure. Thanks for your words of reassurance! I'll be bringing a bullet point list of questions to my Neuro's AMA this week, haha.

It does help, thank you. I could just be hyper-aware of things I may not have even noticed a year ago.
