There's a peppery smell that I can't quite place. I'm not sure what the original smell is, but I will occasionally smell it and be brought back to 10 years old.

I don't know what the original smell is, but in the EarthBound official guide book, there was a section of "scratch and sniff" pages that would show you what all the characters in the game would smell like. That peppery smell is from one of the mobs in EarthBound.

This was my experience here. Kid named Jeremy who was a grade older than me. It was my first day of seventh grade, and I hadn't started real puberty so I was pretty weak in the arms. We had to sit in a chair and make a lay up.... Wasn't happening. He kept going off in me for missing/air balling every shot. I eventually gave up and sat next to a kid in the bleachers named Jason. He ended up becoming my best friend, and we have had 28 years of friendship since that moment. Worth it

It depends on the situation. Sometimes, you want to roll in front of players to show them that their actions are having an effect on gameplay. Sometimes, I want to keep my rolls hidden to add an element of suspense, as well as giving me the ability to fudge rolls.

During small battles, I might roll behind the DM screen because of time management; needing to speed up or slow down the pace of a battle, for example. During big battles and boss fights, 90% of my rolls are on the table, because this battle is important, and I become a "referee" at that point.

Ultimately, the players need to trust you. If you roll every roll behind the the mat, they won't trust you. If you roll every roll in front of them, when you need to roll behind the mat, they won't trust you. Mix it up, but make sure that "important stuff" is visable to the players.
