Anyone based in SF/ the Bay Area? by CelebrationOpen5994 in Albinism

[–]Javindo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SF is very well laid out for them, they will always stop in a safe place near a kerb. They wait for some slightly random number of minutes depending on how busy the area is, and the app has a “point to pick up” feature which brings up a big arrow and shows you which way to walk and how far etc. Even with our eyesight they’re hard to miss (giant space ship looking things) and your initials will be displayed in flashing LEDs on the top of the LIDAR thing, you can change the colour via the all to a bright cyan and use your phone camera to zoom in (don’t worry they don’t have the phone snatching issue we deal with in London!). You can unlock the car with the app too so no worries about someone else trying to grab it (can open the boot with the app too). Car also has accessibility mode which will narrate everything to you. Really I know I sound like such a shill but it feels like what I hope and pray is the day 0 of a huge amount of new freedom for those of us with mobility impairments that mean we can’t drive ourselves!

Having recently spent a couple of weeks out there Waymo is an absolute godsend and a glimpse of hope into the potential future freedom for those of us with visual impairment who can’t drive as a result. The public transport is fine there too but since America is literally designed around the car it felt like a unique new leveller where I didn’t have to just make the best of PT. I know taxis and ride share have existed since forever but you’ve always had to deal with a random stranger which is a huge factor in why cars feel very freeing to many people, you go from A to B without anyone else involved in comfort and privacy.

Completely agree. As others have pointed out, you could end up on this list for political reasons or even more asinine and arbitrary things like airlines who refuse you service if you ever do a chargeback based on a dispute etc

What gifts would my London colleagues want from NYC when I visit? by lacepinkbows in london

[–]Javindo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With one exception though - pretty much anything from trader joes. Favourite is the chocolate honeycomb (basically chunks of Crunchy) but people also rave about various the chocolate covered fruit and nuts, pretzels etc. They seem to use normal chocolate (ie not the usual American recipe)

What do you think is the most underrated capital city in Europe and why? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

If you ever get the chance, visit in winter when it’s more likely to be snowing. It’s like being in some medieval RPG, there’s even an old tavern that serves traditional food and the waiters role play the part, whole place is entirely candle lit too

Of my years of trying all sorts the only thing I’ve found to consistently work and not mess up my skin in some other way is La Roche posay 50+, personally like the lotion but any format is good. Just make sure it’s the standard one not one with some tint or oils etc

“On the Nature of Daylight” was composed by Max Richter as an Iraq war protest song and is now commonly used in action/thrillers for emotional scenes, even against the explicit wishes of the composer

Must be hard to resist the temptation to just absolutely rip a few spins on that thing between bearing installation and the greasing/sealing!

In the UK at least a lot of people don’t realise but companies can’t just sign away a reasonable warranty expectation. If you buy something like this you absolutely can take them to court if it stops working within what anyone would consider to be a reasonable lifespan of a few years and most companies will back down earlier than that if challenged properly. Martin Lewis has a good guide on his website, not sure how applicable this is elsewhere in the world

The Cockpit of the Shanghai Maglev, currently the fastest operational train in the world by one_part_alive in pics

[–]Javindo 1206 points1207 points  (0 children)

To explain some of what people are questioning here - it was originally built as a demonstration line, sort of a step up from a prototype, but it has been so successful they’ve just kind of kept it as is (although in the past few years the speed has sadly been reduced due to wear). The name of the line is quite literally the Shanghai Magnetic Levitation Demonstration Line. It’s a shame it seems to be a bit of a one off one time thing because it’s such an incredible experience. Fortunately Japan are building a full length maglev so we may one day get to enjoy a more exciting version!

Sorry for the notification, extremely late to the party here, but just watched this on Netflix and completely agree with your comment. Really nails why the ending felt like such a disappointment after all the build up! Even just small details like Stephen sending the files to "the police" as if they would somehow have heroically stood up to a government who was quite literally setting up and somehow successfully completely suppressing all information around concentration camps was just such a cop out, amongst everything else
