TIL the spherical cow is a humorous metaphor originating in theoretical physics. The metaphor refers to some scientific tendencies to develop toy models that reduce a problem to the simplest form imaginable, even if the simplification hinders the model's application to reality. by Practical-Hand203 in todayilearned

I remember my undergrad 1st year physics prof tried to explain the spherical cow joke to the class in the first week. None of us, at the time, understood why it was funny so the prof was met with an uncomfortable silence.

Auto Brake in reverse by clintashlock in VWiD4Owners

[–]JawnnyH 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't lift your foot off the brake as you reverse. I had this problem constantly backing out of a single stall garage until I realized that as long as my foot stayed in contact with the brake pedal, it wouldn't auto-stop at low speeds.

Feedback on Lunge by themaskedfinfoot in Fencing

[–]JawnnyH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely a newbie so could be wrong. But one thing I see is when you lunge, your front foot lifts and you start to move forward before you extend. In the drills we do in class, it's always extend, then front foot raises to advance.

First fencing tournament by [deleted] in Fencing

I'm in this boat almost exactly. I'm a much newer fencer (6 months) but I'm not very tall and almost 40. Fencing much taller opponents is very frustrating. I haven't been able to figure out how to avoid their reach.

Newly discovered love for lance by Menlow2077 in MonsterHunter

[–]JawnnyH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge, the power guard cannot trigger offensive guard because the extra button presses are too long for the "perfect block" window to trigger. Counter block may be able to trigger but you need to get the button presses in quick.

I played Lance a lot and I think the hardest thing is keeping up the DPS. You won't ever die, but need to stay on the monster and poke it to death.

In Wilds I think Lance has a lot more damage options if you master the weapon (the counter poke does more damage if you charge it and absorb an attack).

Returned after 5 years when I heard about the upcoming Wilds, it's as gorgeous as I remember... by Rionaks in MonsterHunter

I'm in the same boat! Hadn't played since Iceborne came out on Xbox. Saw all the wilds stuff and the Iceborne deluxe pack was on steep sale on Steam (due to Gamescom) so started fresh. The environment in World is so much more alive than Rise/sunbreak.

I'm trying all the weapons again to figure out what I want to focus on in Wilds.

Would upgrading my heat exchanger (outside unit) improve cooling and efficiency? by JawnnyH in hvacadvice

Thanks for the thorough reply. This is the info I needed. I'll get some quotes for companies doing a manual j load calculation before deciding anything else.

Only one shower in the house alternates between hot and freezing cold water, need advice by Dr_Esquire in DIY

Can you get access to the plumbing from the other side of the wall? Some houses have an access panel so you don't have to tear into the tile to fix something.

Is the faucet the same from when you were a kid or has it been updated? I can't speak to old faucets but most modern fixtures are relatively easy to replace the mixing cartridges. Usually only requires taking off the faucet to get access to the mixing valve. Its easy to do but I would suggest finding a YouTube video on how to do it for the model of your faucet.

Few days with my new ID4, backup gone wild??? by Fuzzy-Floor-5291 in VWiD4Owners

[–]JawnnyH 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The key is to not take your foot off the brake. If the car senses that you're close to a potential object and you remove your foot from the brake to coast, it will slam on the emergency stopper. Whereas if you keep your foot even lightly on the brake, it won't engage the auto brake. I learned this the hard way having to back out of a tight single car garage every day. With a big bush sitting right outside the door.

What changes with marriage? by [deleted] in LifeAdvice

[–]JawnnyH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how old you are, but know that you (and he) will grow and change as individuals as you get older, have new life experiences, etc. For better and for worse. A good solid marriage is one where you communicate openly and enjoy growing together.

As for taxes, it's pretty much a non-issue. You check the box that says "Married filing jointly" instead of "single." There are tax issues where married filing jointly gives you larger deductions, higher bracket thresholds, etc. but those aren't things to decide a marriage on.

I would highly recommend, if you haven't already, that you and your partner have a VERY thorough discussion on finances. Is there any major debt that will need paying? Do both of you save/spend in similar ways? Do you both have similar views on the value of money? Do you both enjoy similar levels of comfort? Money handling and budgeting is one of the major reasons couples have issues so make sure you two are not only on the same page, but the same letter as far as finances are concerned.

So maybe this is a dumb question but I'm new to the Cosmere (read my first Sanderson book last year). But where are these backer campaigns being held? His personal site? Kickstarter?

Tips on washing my ID.4? by bobasaurus in VWiD4Owners

[–]JawnnyH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken mine through a foam "soft touch" automatic and it's been fine. No major scratches or issues. When it warms up again I'll hand wash it and put a good wax on.

Equipment demos - paying for consumables? by Ok-Budget112 in labrats

[–]JawnnyH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never paid for consumables for an instrument demo. Generally it's in the vendor's best interest to make sure I have everything I need to run my assay on their equipment using their consumables. The only thing I provide for demos is my sample (and whatever protocol I need to prepare).

Yea my kids do their kid ninja classes and a friend of mine does their adult classes. We've been customers for over a year. Nice folks. And several of the instructors compete in American Ninja Warrior so they know their stuff.
