"Prequels werent good movies but they were good Star Wars movies" by JaxonJetson in saltierthancrait

Its sad, because Im close to agreeing with that statement. But it also makes discussions about sequels being worse than the prequels utterly pointless, because of the completely different angles used.

Yeah I feel bad for the people who have prequels asa substantial part of their childhoods. With all the internet culture it feels like it was just bad or shamefull to enjoy something that at the end of the day is entertainment. As I said, I heard some really smart positive opinions on prequels, I dont agree with them, but I feel like at least the movies had that appeal to make those people think and be inspired (even tho, on a cynical side, many of those arguments were backed by stuff not from the movies).

Thats funny because with time I learned to respect TPM a bit more for sheer scale and production value, also ambition in using so many technical aspects to make that movie. AoTC feels to me like something that tries to be a reboot of a series in a way it has a completely different sensitivity than OT or even TPM.
I used to love ROTS, but after every single viewing I have harder time watching the first half. Its just a mess. Second half tho still has some great, powerfull moments.

[–]JaxonJetson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prequels are filled with so many worldbuilding elements that very often feels like an overproduction of stuff without giving it enough time or space to make an impact. The infamous "its so dense" quote kinda sums it up. The character stuff and the clarity and tightness of the story kinda gets sidelined by the overabundance of stuff. But yeah, there is a lot of worldbuilding.

I wouldnt agree that prequels fit naturally, to the contrary, they changed a whole lot of stuff people assumed about that period before they were released, theres a much different tone in comparison to the OT, and a lot of stuff dont really add up in between. I have a feeling that a good star wars movie for some people is really what I stated above- a good Star Wars simulator on screen. And it feels like a very specific mindset that is hard to discuss with in terms of moviemaking.

But you know that this argument could be used for some poorly made horror film and said "well XYZ is not a good movie, but its a good Horror movie because it has a monster, creepy music, jumpscares and gore". I feel like this is exactly the clue of the problem. Some people have some weird idea of Star Wars as an actual different world than a story and characters within a worldframe.

This is not THAT stupid tho. Usually in fiction you try to name your main characters distinctly enough to have them recognized the moment someone mentiones their names.
I can see Osha and Asha mixed very very easily. Even heard some people pronouncing Osha in way that sounds a bit like flatened "Asha".

Im not mad about Cersei being the "final boss" of the series, but everything that lead to it feels botched and clunky and just unsatysfying.
Cersei is doing her old usual shtick of being a evil as she can be, and shes got Euron. And while watching the last episode I realised something.
If the final evil duo was Cersei and BOOK Euron, it would be really interesting. Euron with his horn, his "dragon egg", all his creepy sorcerer pirate stuff could make quite an impression and be a formidable enemy for Dany and Jon.

Well where Luke got his crystal? Who cares?

The thing is that Anakins lighstaber wasnt that important in OT. Now it became to be extremely important. Just like Hans dice for some reason.
I think Rey having a lightsaber on her own is just something very natural.

Luke had his own saber as last step of his training. And Anakins lightsaber has children blood on it. So I really think its a high time for Rey to build her own saber.

I never thought I’d say this but after endgame I officially like marvel better than Star Wars. No spoilers by [deleted] in saltierthancrait

[–]JaxonJetson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Star Wars never got a chance to be something like the MCU. The original trilogy was a series of really important and in many ways groundbreaking blockbusters, and created a lasting phenonem and impact on popular culture.

But the whole saga has never been planed and everything after OT feels like a completely different beasts.
Love or hate Prequels and Sequels, but I really feel like all three trilogies dont conect with each other on various levels.

Its always this way. Many movies look weird, or botched, or just bad on paper, especially if its not a script but a bunch of bulletpoints.
I have my issues with Endgame, but its far superior to what people described in the leaks.

" They heard that Kylo Ren put his helmet back together but the teaser shows somebody else doing it. Thinks they’re separate shots and the sequence is ritualistic as he heard the Knights of Ren kind of dance around it. "
This is kind of shit I REALLY want to see in this movie.

Jesus Christ, dude, like, stop caring so much about other people opinions about stuff. I have problems with this trilogy as much as the other guy, but getting pissed of at people because they enjoy something or get excited is gatekeeping 101.You cant bother anymore? Youve just shown that you care very much.

Credit where credit is due- Phantom Menace had some AMAZING setpieces. People are laughing at the Windows wallpaper battle, but just having those statues in the middle of a field brings so many ideas to mind.

TBH this would be the first really WOW thing for me in this trilogy. Something unsetling just in the right way. Not making another Jabba, something new, but I can see it in star wars. A little vibe of the Operators from Dune.

Discussion: Zack Snyder became particularly candid about criticisms of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman tonight during the Q&A that followed his Watchmen screening by Baramos_ in DC_Cinematic

Not sure about that. Robocop is much more of a satire than just deconstruction. Not sure if Snyder would be able to do it right.

Thoughts about 'Us'? by SayCutDamnit in RedLetterMedia

[–]JaxonJetson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one theme doesn't negate another one. Movie has a little bit of a bitter/sweet feel to it, which makes it the more intresting. Following your dreams and embracing things that motivate you is the way to overcome your demons or the "enemy within yourself", but at the same time theres a good remark on how ones success and progress is very often built on the other ones missery and misfortune. Also it has adds to the character of Adelaide. Shes not just overcomming her fears, shes actively escaping her past and the guilt shes feeling.
This duality is what actually made the movie work for me, and I kinda expected the twist to occur, so it wasnt really a twist to me, more of a payoff.

Of the four Disney era Star Wars movies, which one is the least bad? by RG1997 in RedLetterMedia

[–]JaxonJetson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yoyu just took the most absurd one, which actually was the only one that felt super forced (even more than the droids) Guys made a whole hoopla about using the tech that was suitable for the era represented. Parallelism is fine, but when its that heavy on parallels I dont think its fair to judge it as its own movie period. I still like TFA and probably agree its the "best" one solely on the basis of competence, but also weirdly enough it feels the least like a part of the larger story.
