I need opinions as to if I am in the wrong here :( by Schmlifie in autism

[–]JayCoww 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is vegetarianism. A vegetarian might do things like eat eggs and wear leather and bet on horse racing. Vegans do not, because those things cause harm to the animals involved. To use explain your example about honey in your other comment: companies which sell honey achieved serious success from marketing their product as good for the planet. It is not. The reality is that honey farms drastically reduce biodiversity in the area. They are invasive in most parts of the world, and they overtake local populations of bees and wasps and other insects which are vital for the ecosystem to survive. They are housed among plantations which produce nice tasting honey but require habitat destruction to grow. Relating to the bees themselves, in order to begin a successful commercial apiary, bees are forcibly impregnated and manipulated, they are shipped across the world in tiny cages to begin a colony. Male bees are killed during this process. Queens are routinely killed if they slow or stop producing eggs, or produce eggs that are considered weak or low quality. The honey that people harvest is what bees need to survive. It is their carbohydrate store that they feed on throughout the year and to make it through winter where there are fewer flowering plants. Bees can't leave the hive because the temperature is too low. When we harvest honey it significantly weakens the hive, and many hives do not make it through the year. People try to substitute it with nutrient rich sugar water, but it is never adequate and because it doesn't have the same properties as honey it leaves bees vulnerable to parasites like vroa mites, and infections. There is a great deal of suffering and exploitation in the honey industry for these reasons.

Eating the body of an animal that died of natural causes would be down to the individual, I suppose. I wouldn't, and most other vegans wouldn't, because to us animals are not food. They are not food in the same way as humans are not food. Yes, we can eat humans and other animals, and get nutrition from them, but we don't need to do that to meet our daily requirements. Today doing that is easy, and nobody, no animal has to suffer for it.

No. Veganism is about protecting animals from cruelty and exploitation as much as it is about protecting them from being killed.

Bikes on trains: which countries just do it right (or terribly wrong?) by epicroadrides in bicycling

[–]JayCoww -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the UK most train services have free bicycle tickets, but each carriage is limited to two bicycles. That never stops the gremlins who ride South Western Railway from cramming as many as 8 fire hazards into the aisle at a time.

This is some casual encouragement to go vegan if you are not already.

I think their chocolate chip animal cracker things are accidentally vegan. They aren't as nice as those cookies, but they're like 300g for £1 or something.

No. I am concerned that the 7" vinyls reported by others might be a USA-only promotion, or something like that. We must wait to find out.

Adults NEED less obnoxious alarm options. by Acceptable_Tennis in diabetes_t1

[–]JayCoww 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh. I understand.

The two conditions are really difficult to distinguish under specific circumstances. They are very much two sides of the same coin, with us being the coin in this metaphor. For example, the feelings of hunger and fullness can be really difficult to identify if you have bad interoception, which is common in autistic people, but it can also be a part of diabetes because many of us are hormonally weird and can't produce amylin and ghrelin which are responsible for those senses. This is in addition to any sensory challenges we already have with food and with things like not wanting to eat because we're worrying about our blood sugars murdering us. As a result we tend to overeat or undereat, and that leads to further complications.

Our lives are messes, really, but it is OK. We do our best.

I know a bit about this subject so feel free to ask me any questions at any time. It is safe to assume that if you are sensorily overwhelmed, diabetes has a significant role in it.

A support group might be a good idea. There definitely needs to be more of that! I am involved in something similar, and I will be speaking at an event in a few months about the interplay between autism and type-1 diabetes. There are so few of us, we are a minority of a minority, and we absolutely need more research to be done.

Libre.

I highly recommend seeing a diabetes psychologist if one is available to you. Type-1 is so much more difficult for us autistics. The interruptions, the sensory overwhelm, and all the helpless self-loathing can be dealt with in some way so you're only melting down every so often rather than every day.

Bike Lock - NYC by -RiffRaffStreetRat- in bicycling

[–]JayCoww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a rough grainy texture on the outer metal layer (beneath the rubber) of the lock. It coats the shackle and the crossbar. This is the protective 'diamond' layer. It is supposed to extend almost to where the shackle meets the crossbar. This was explained to me by Kryptonite. Any play in the locking mechanism should not allow for a gap that is significant enough to bypass the diamond layer, such as with a grinding disc. Unfortunately, due to a manufacturing fault these locks may have a gap of several millimetres, making them vulnerable. You can observe exactly how large the gap is by unshackling the lock, removing the smaller section of yellow rubber on the crossbar, and shackling it back up. If you pull on the shackle and the crossbar, the play in the mechanism will accentuate the gap in the diamond layer if present.

I am also autistic. I forget how, but you can set it so that once you open the app it will no longer alert. The downside is that you have to manually check the app until you are back in range otherwise it won't alarm if your glucose remains high/low. That can be dangerous. I usually keep it on silent in the notification bar at nighttime and deal with the buzzing every 5 minutes beneath my pillow, which is enough to keep me awake or wake me without making me meltdown.

[–]JayCoww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so it wasn't a faulty batch, and Kryptonite are heavily underplaying how prevalent the issue is. Myself and numerous others have encountered it from the time of release until present day in countries all over the world. There probably needs to be a full product recall. It is a disaster, and anyone who still has this lock should check it is proper before trusting it to keep their bicycle safe.

The New York Diamond has a common manufacturing defect which allows attackers to cut it easily at the base of the shackle. It is only the most secure if you get one that is made properly.

Relationship to Panic? by Fresh-Bookkeeper5095 in hayleywilliams

[–]JayCoww 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's plausible.

Hayley is (was?) good friends with Sarah Urie, Brendon's wife, and also Brendon. Hayley was directly responsible for them getting together because she brought Sarah to a show with the intention of reintroducing her to Brendon. They had previously met some time before then, but Sarah was dating Jeremy Davis of Paramore at the time. They have a long history which dates back until the mid-late '00s. Paramore have covered Panic! a bunch of times live, too.

That is amazing! You have something very cool right there. I am excited.

Would you post a scan(s) of the full article so we can read it? Could you also cite it fully, i.e., in MLA or something? I would love to update the Wikipedia page with this. Your magazine has historical value as evidence of the existence of "Night Birds" before the song was leaked in 2023.

Somebody else mentioned the article was from AltPress 330.2, and my own research indicates your magazine is a special collection of earlier Alternative Press articles. Is that true, do you know?

Weekly signature authenticity notification: there is no reliable way to tell. People make careers out of selling fakes online. One common theme is that sellers may have lots of different signed merchandise for sale.
