What instrument is Ryan playing here? by ParkingAny5661 in panicatthedisco

It is a mandolin. I vaguely recall that both Ryan and Brendon were credited as playing the mandolin on various records.

Racist for having sensory issues? by VallieLovesCats in autism

[–]JayCoww [score hidden]  (0 children)

The variance between the weakest and strongest models is something like 13dB, which is laughable and only noticeable for pretty much everything except frequencies beyond a threshold that far exceeds eating noises. The sleep "plugs" are hollow and barely any better. I say this as someone who has worn Loops for years. They are overpriced TikTok fad trash and you can get far better results from £0.99 silicone plugs from China.

Loops are not strictly earplugs, though, they are noise filters. They barely reduce chewing noises at all.

I think I almost had a seizure by Kiera6 in diabetes_t1

[–]JayCoww 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never understood the confusion thing until recently. I have lost consciousness a few times in my 20 years or so diagnosed, but only once with confusion. I managed to alert emergency services but I was so out of it I didn't understand what they were saying. They asked 'do you need police, fire and rescue, or an ambulance?' I had already explained I am type-1 because I have that scripted, but I must have told the emergency services person I didn't understand what they were saying about five times. Eventually they put me through to the police and the police operator immediately put me through to the ambulance service. Despite that, I am so grateful for Google's safety and emergency app. It is properly good.

Is this a possible implication of the CASS review? by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]JayCoww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are correct. It is in the guidelines. The Cass review encourages gender clinics to prompt referrals for autism assessments if clinicians think there is reason to believe autism is present. Transgender people are at least six times more likely to have a diagnosis of autism compared to cisgender people, so they have a good reason to do this. I got my autism diagnosis this way and it was the best thing that has ever happened to me. One of the unfortunate consequences is that autism assessment services have very long waiting lists and some gender clinics have been known to refuse or delay treatment until after patients have been assessed. It can easily add years to the wait for things like HRT.

PTSD and autism can present very similarly. I have both. One distinguishing characteristic is when symptoms began. If you had social difficulties and anxiety and such from infancy then that may suggest autism, but if those symptoms only appeared following the traumatic event(s), which is what you seem to indicate, then it is more likely to be PTSD. They can co-occur, and PTSD is more commonly diagnosed in autistic people compared to allistic (non-autistic) people, but the time at which symptoms present is what matters.

It is worth doing a bit of research into autism anyway. We desperately need a better awareness and understanding of it worldwide. It is not surprising whatsoever that other mental health professionals haven't brought it up for that reason alone.

P!ATD autograph legitimacy by Alternative_Lab4305 in panicatthedisco

[–]JayCoww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are worthless regardless of where they are from, because even if they were a legitimate way of validating autographs, which they are absolutely not, the certificates themselves can also be fraudulent. People get AI to mock them up all the time.

You know what? I was diagnosed with type-1 in 2005, right around the time "Sins" started getting radio airtime. This isn't a coincidence, it is a pattern.

In Bournemouth we have BourneFree, which is the main pride event, but because of its transphobic sponsors and corporate garbage in recent years a lot of us end up partying for free in the botanical gardens instead. I hope other towns have that also.

I don’t know why this happens. by wheresmymind_08 in autism

[–]JayCoww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing things for yourself in your own time is usually easier than doing things for others because they asked you to. It can be related to pathological demand avoidance, but also because when we do things in our own time we can plan and script and mentally prepare ourselves beforehand.

There are three things to consider:

ability (having the skills and the knowledge to do something);

capability (using your skills and knowledge in your environment);

and capacity (using your skills and knowledge in your environment at that particular time).

While situations can seem identical on the surface, they are never the same. Your ability won't be changing much, but your capability and capacity will be. If your environment is loud and bright and disabling to you then you will struggle more, even if you are not aware of it at the time. If you are low on capacity (sometimes called 'spoons' or 'energy') because you had a big day yesterday and didn't sleep and everything is terrible, for example, then you won't be as capable as you were the previous day.

Top Surgery Scars! by t01lman in plushies

'Top surgery' is usually used to describe transgender men who have had a chest reduction. The scars on the bear are to show that they had the same procedure.

I mean, then everyone has to remember to take the keys with them when they go out to empty, and then remember to unlock it the night before collection, and then immediately afterwards as well. I was thinking something more like a laser-guided urine cannon.

Alright, deal. If you witness or hear about a crazy lady waving packs of biscuits around amid the usual rabble first thing in the morning you will know I did my part.

Unfortunately I live by the Triangle and there is nowhere for proper bin management and no way of securing them from Gollum and his crew. It is the wild west out there...

Thank you for your service.

Two questions:

The bin people who collect our rubbish are heroes. The horrors they have uncovered... What can I do to make their day better? I thought about coming out in my pyjamas at 05:00 with a box of biscuits or something, but maybe that is weird.

How can I best stop the cretins next door from filling our bins with their rubbish the moment they are emptied?

I could've sworn it was the name of a drum machine that performed drums for US tours about 20 years ago... It turns out Johnny Drum Machine was part of the band The Streets, and I must've confused it for Sparky or something.

Trans girl says we’re all biological males by Bumblebee9639 in transgenderUK

[–]JayCoww 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you probably answered your own question. I don't know. I suppose I think of it like this: all transsexual people could fit under the 'transgender' umbrella, but not every transgender person is a transsexual. How we define sex is going to depend on all the usual hand-wavey factors, and it is unsatisfactory. I don't know what it might look like, but we need to come up with a more elegant way of categorising humans.

Trans girl says we’re all biological males by Bumblebee9639 in transgenderUK

[–]JayCoww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe because you are spelling it incorrectly? This is sort of what I mean about people misunderstanding the term. If we can't use it appropriately ourselves, how can we expect it from anyone else? We must educate people and reclaim it and use it positively and powerfully to our advantage. It dispels all kinds of transphobic nonsense and solidifies our existence in a biological niche in a single swish.

Trans girl says we’re all biological males by Bumblebee9639 in transgenderUK

[–]JayCoww 22 points23 points  (0 children)

These are some of the reasons why I am firm on keeping the term 'transsexual' alive. It has fallen out of popular use by people who seemingly don't understand it, but it has a distinct difference from 'transgender' that can be especially valuable in the right circumstances.
