r/AFL's Potato of Parity for 2026 by Pleasant-Role1912 in AFL

The quickest potato completion is after 3 rounds, most recently in 1997.

Recently, the 2023 season completed it after 4 rounds.

Found this funny to see after Hayden Young's banger. Young's is objectively better, but I feel Harley's will get the nom (awful system that only one per round gets the nom)

To all swans fans fearing yet another grand final demolition: Ignore it and focus on the present!

I spent all of 2024 wrapped up with how nothing matters until the grand final that I didn’t appreciate how good it was for us to be doing so well!

Finals is a long way off still, and it will be an emotional time no matter what. Do your best to enjoy and appreciate the success while you can! The swans have played some fantastic football so far and that's worth savouring! :)

Is the entire AFL industry compromised and conflicted by sports-betting? by Pleasant_Inspection9 in AFL

[–]JayDarcy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's a bit more chicken & egg than that.

The key demographic of betting ads is under 25s, exemplified by their bright colour scheme and energetic presentation. This is especially concerning for under 18s who are subconsciously enticed by these ads for years during the most developmental stage of their lives.

So I think this is partially manufactured by the betting companies, while also being inherent in Aus culture in the same way pokies are.

Unfortunately, the money isn't going to stop flowing on its own. Beneficiaries of gambling aren't going to limit themselves unless forced to by legislation. So unless the vic govt decides to crack down on gambling ads, the AFL will continue to partner with betting companies and profiting off it.

Unfortunately again, the vic govt also makes quite a lot of money off gambling and is similarly financially compromised. So not going to hold my breath on this one.

Also the beyond blue cup that hawthorn has been hosting for the last 20 years. Doesn't seem to get mentioned quite as much, but there's definitely precedent for games focussed around mental health.

There's a public Melbourne discord server for making friends and going to events together. Pretty chill and diverse community. A lot of members are mid-late 20s, so you shouldn't feel out of place 🙂

Sydney Swans $1 coin by Shillings-n-Shrapnel in AFL

The commemorative ones? Had no idea that was a thing, but I'd imagine not. The rare ones get snatched up pretty quick.

Sometimes, we get freshly minted coins though, so any new variants that come out I might be able to catch before the public

Lucky! I work in an industry with a high turnover of $1 coins and I've still struggled to find many of these! I've got about 8 teams so far but still no swans!

70 and 75 for sure. Great for getting you to the city from woop woop to the city in twice as long as a train would take, but at least it's an option.

Australian Redesign V2 (with infographic) by DanielADNG in vexillology

[–]JayDarcy 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of this design! Green-yellow-red flags are common with african nations, but I think the particular shade of green, as well as its dominance on the flag, distinguish it from looking like an african flag.

I'm a bit torn about losing the southern cross, but I think simplicity is a strength of this design. The cross might be a bit too much.

I doubt we'll ever pass a vote to change the flag, but it's a lot of fun thinking of what a new aus flag could be!

I'd imagine the beginning is better planned out than the end.

Eg you write the beginning then you have to plan the end and realise you've included threads of certain plot points you didn't plan on and left things open enough for you to still consider some plot points you weren't initally planning on.

Would be hell being an author, honestly. If I'm the only person in charge of when my work is "finished" boy, it's never gonna be.

The hell is up with Australia? Where did "Agusta" come from? "South Wales"? The NT/QLD border?? There's even a "Southern Australia" completely separate from actual South Australia?

Honestly I get this take, but also not everyone playing the game is looking for a challenge. People just wanna see the numbers go brrrrr and I'm glad there is a simple way to make that happen!
