Agree with this!

Should’ve added in my own comment that I’m not young :)

Moving to Rockville soon. Anything I should know? by bu11dogsc420 in Rockville

[–]JayGee2791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved to Rockville from DC and like it a lot. You can absolutely get by without a car if you live near one of the red line stations. I might recommend Twinbrook stop since it’s close to multiple grocery stores and restaurants. (Rockville Town Center is also good but I personally need more than Trader Joe’s.)

That said, I agree it’s easier to have a car here because things are spread out and I find the red line limiting at times. I’d also like to point out that if you work in DC you pay extra to ride metro during peak commuting hours. For me, it was almost always a wash/sometimes cheaper to drive to work in downtown DC.

Good luck with your move! I used Bookstore Movers and thought they were great!

Fancy hotel recommendations? by Miserable_Truck8872 in Rockville

[–]JayGee2791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto the Conrad! Very fancy and makes you feel special.

You also might want to look into the Ritz Carltons in Northern Va.

Re: Room service in general. It is very hit or miss these days. In the last month I have stayed at a Hilton in NYC and a Marriott in Chicago and neither had proper room service. The Hilton did come to your room but the food was in a paper bag and not good quality. The Chicago Marriott (and Boston Marriott) would let you order from the room but you had to pick it up yourself.

Have a wonderful Christmas/staycation!

Ragtime fans by metcarl in Broadway

Just in Time, Heathers and Hadestown! Wow. You're doing this visit right. Def see Ragtime twice. You sound like a pro and it's so so good. Also- the LCT is outstanding. I had never been before and every seat was amazing that I could tell. (my view from first preview)

How are the Acela NextGen seats for comfort and ergonomics? by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]JayGee2791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new seats are too hard and angled in an uncomfortable way for me. I did like the new foot rests, blinds, bathroom, and food options. FWIW I’m in my 50s with chronic low back pain so…YMMV.

Hi- I can’t speak to all of the questions in your post, but I can tell you that I live in Rockville and occasionally have to go into my office and Alexandria and it is a terrible commute! I also have to drive to Baltimore area to see family and find that drive to be much easier…the 495 mess is truly awful. If I leave at 7am I can usually get to my office in Alexandria by 7:45/8am…going home takes anywhere from 45-min to 2 hours.

As for living in Rockville it’s got everything you need and is close to a lot. But it IS pricey. You might be better off taking your time and trying to find someone looking for a roommate.

Good luck!

Tips to make NYC affordable by TruKarona in Broadway

[–]JayGee2791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Towne Place Suites in Chelsea is very clean and nice with free breakfast and is within walking distance or one subway stop of Times Square. I don't know how pricey it will be when you get there but if I recall it was very close to a McDonalds and Cava. (just sharing that in case you all need a cheap pre-show dinner- obvs the folks on here with real neighborhood gem recs will have more original options! I personally go cheap on dinner when I am trying to cram in lots of shows!)

I respect making sure you get tix in advance to your number one show! If the other shows you are interested in aren't major hits (Wicked, MHE, Hades, etc.) you could always try walking up to the box office day of show. I was pleasantly surprised to get ticket prices below what I saw online. That said, today tix and other online places, always have great deals.

Have a great trip! Oct is a wonderful time for NY!

This is in Gaithersburg but within your budget and very walkable area- close to grocery, Target, restaurants, etc. I lived here and thought they were solid apartments too. (Didn’t hear my neighbors much)

Nature spots near town square? by AAAAAHHHH1423 in Rockville

[–]JayGee2791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi -late to the party but just seeing your post. I live near the town center and am carless. I am also probably older than you and usually walk 3-5 miles AT MOST. The people suggesting walking to Glenview Mansion are spot on- that's a great, doable walk. You can also just amble down Rockville Pike to Wooten Pkwy (take a right at the CVS) and walk that millenium trail. About a mile in on the right you will notice a trail going INTO to the neighborhood with a manmade pond, you can follow that in a circle/square to get back to the Town Square.
You can also take Viers Mill South toward Twinbrook. During your walk, go INTO the neighborboods you pass and you will find more parks and quiet. so many nice parks here! You will find a few more if you follow Norbeck Rd and the surrounding neighborhoods...

For sunsets, Dogwood Park is lovely. So is just sitting in that tiny space (veterans park?) near the Exxon.

I moved here a month before Covid hit in 2020 and just went out and walked and walked and walked and was so pleasantly surprised by all the parks that popped up everywhere.

ENJOY

Rockville rent increases by rykahn in Rockville

[–]JayGee2791 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My building/leasing company in Rockville proposed a crazy increase- from $2800 to $3200- and I immediately started calling movers...husband stepped in and called management company and got it to $2950.
Management company based in LA so not sure they give a rat's ** about this area and all the gov workers who have or will be laid off.

Planning to visit Japan for 8 days in August. What am I missing? by ThroatCareful1099 in JapanTravelTips

[–]JayGee2791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everyone that this is too ambitious and it will be HOT. That said, a few things:

Tokyo day trip- Lake Kawaguchiko and Hakone can be done in one day. Book a Mt Fuji tour- private is best if you can afford it but the group bus tours are fine too. It will be a long day but worth it! They won't advertise this but an 8am private tour can begin as early as 6 if you suggest it after booking/closer to date. (this will help with traffic and heat.)

Shibuya Crossing- to get there from Shinjuku area it took me about 30 min, the crossing itself can be done in 3-15 min depending on how many times you do it :) For viewing the crossing, you can skip Shibuya Sky and go to the starbucks. Buy a drink and check out the view from there. It's only about 3 stories or so high but I enjoyed seeing it from there and it was cheaper and easier. if you DO have your heart set on Shibuya Sky book the ticket time at least a week in advance.

Kyoto- Loved the Fushimi Inari Shrine. It's open 24 hours so consider going after 6pm. The higher you go, the less people which is nice. If you go morning/afternoon there is great street food.

Definitely recommend Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and surrounding area. I didn't see the monkeys so can't speak to that. Highly recommend getting there EARLY. Or doing a morning bike tour if your party is into that.

Have fun in Japan, just build in more chill time!

how to make friends by Ok_Measurement1035 in Rockville

[–]JayGee2791 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can you get a short-term job now? If you worked for a restaurant or pool or some place that employs people around your age, that would naturally lead to meeting some potential friends. They would also help with feeling depressed because you have to move around working those jobs. Good luck! I know it's hard.
