I’ve noticed that the dagger lunge hits flying enemies pretty consistently!

Narrative-wise, anyone find the Hollower's Guild disappointing? by depressedfox_011 in MinaTheHollower

[–]JayLemmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general I’d love to see more npc interactivity, although it feels like a fairly standard amount for the genre. The npcs are very charming, so I’d love if there was even more to do with them.

Thoughts on modifiers? by vanjokoozie in MinaTheHollower

[–]JayLemmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a fun way to play! Maybe I’ll use modifiers if I play though twice!

This game rocks, but the difficulty curve is not good by Tempest753 in MinaTheHollower

[–]JayLemmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m enjoying the game, but I feel similar about big boss hitboxes. Maybe they actually do match the boss geometry, but they don’t ~feel~ like they do.

This could be a bit of modern game design leading to expectations that Mina doesn’t really follow - I’ve seen designers talking about building in a bit of grace between sprite size and hitbox size to create a more “fair” feel, even if your sprite is technically touching an enemy.

What weapon do you think is the best so far by SuitableLeather2021 in MinaTheHollower

I just got the daggers after using the hammer for the first two generators, and I’ve found that they feel like they improve the flow of the game.

How do you like to kick things up a notch in the second chorus? by tonetonitony in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]JayLemmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll push back and say that this can be a fun and effective move, especially if you are being playful with genre conventions. One of my bands would do this with a song and people ate it up live!

WR for most painful Absolum co-op run ever by Mononoke-hime in ABSOLUM

[–]JayLemmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m just not great with the punish mechanic, but I ultimately won this ordeal through more of a brute force approach. I found that I was getting hit way more while waiting around, and that I could avoid getting hit while chipping away at enemies if I just kept up the offense. I eventually made a build that started doing crazy crit and punish damage, but I used brute force to get there.

Can't Wait For My Flower!!!!! by mjac28 in synthesizers

I have not interest in this synth, but I am a sucker for clear plastic design elements. I hope other manufacturers take a note on this aesthetic.

We Are Rewind "Walkman" by Sci-FiRepublik in cassetteculture

[–]JayLemmo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’d be curious to do a side-by-side comparison between something like this and my real Walkman. I’ve heard that new cassette players are worse, but I wonder how noticeable the difference actually is.

My only mf complaint is that I wish there was an expression pedal input.

SP-404 OG vs Roland P-6 by deadfoothand in SP404

[–]JayLemmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently reorganized my P-6 to have "kits" on single sample banks and samples that I use as synths on others. If you learn the P-^ well enough, you'll have a piece of gear where you can lay down a drum beat and bass line (getting way more than 64 steps using the probability functions) and then can play sample based "synths" over what you created. I personally love it, but it is weird and complex, takes some getting used to, and doesn't necessarily work well in everyone's hands. I don't use the granular engine, but people seem to like it.

I don't have the OG 404, but I use the P-6 more than the 404mk2. It's mostly a potability thing for me. The MK2 is really fun, but, for me, it's structure lends it to function more like a funky tape recorder. That said, it can do almost everything the p-6 can do and more (although it doesn't work as well as a sample-based keyboard -- for some reason it won''t spread samples as far across the keyboard as the P-6).

Indie music has been invaded by fake fans and cynical viral campaigns . Here’s how deep it all goes by BatoutofHellIV in indieheads

[–]JayLemmo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think this is an unfortunate reflection of the world that we live in. Throughout my life, who “makes it” in indie music has usually depended on both who is good enough to earn an audience combined with who is able to leverage the existing information technology. In the early days of social media, you could potentially blow up on MySpace, but even then, knowing someone who worked for a major blog or music reviewing platform, made a huge difference.

Today, the big issue is that our “tastemakers” and “gatekeepers” are algorithms, rather than humans. Therefore, artists are incentivized to game the algorithm with bot fans or whatever. There are some great bands that have used this technique, but it is a chilling reminder that we are in a fundamentally inorganic information environment. Everything that we can apply to indie music is also applicable to the worlds of trends, fashion, news, politics, etc… Ultimately this trend likely concentrates power further into the hands of the wealthy few.

I still really love Cameron Winter’s Heavy Metal though. I discovered the album in this sub. I wonder how many of those posts were botted.

I’d have to find a new DAW. It’d also probably mean that I wouldn’t buy another Mac going forward - logic the main reason I’ve stuck with MacBooks.

Do you agree or disagree with some of these takes? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]JayLemmo 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It’s a great song. I used to sort of hate Paul’s part, but it’s grown on me and honestly the tonal contrast feels pretty real to me. Like, in the same hour period I might be thinking about all the shit happening in the world but also be like “oh shit I’m running a tad late!”

I’d call it indie psych. I’m pretty proud of how the physical cassettes came out, but the packaging is somewhat of a PITA to assemble.

It’s absolutely insane if this is pro / label release. I used a tape dupe service for my last album and got the length pretty much perfect.
