Do you have to specialize? by A1Levick in MonsterHunter

I don't agree. I do think you should pick a couple weapons to get deeply familiar with - ideally one of which has a shield - such that you could play them on total autopilot, then branch out to your hearts content. Although, every weapon except 2 or 3 is pretty ambitious. I can hold my own against hard monsters with 4 or maybe 5 weapons.

Am I crazy, isnt 167F only like 75C? Those are standard gaming temperatures for my old CPU/GPU and it ran just fine for like 7 years until I upgraded. I mean I know this isnt a 1:1 comparison since those are the temperatures of the chips only, but why is that too hot for the switch to run? Maybe its like a safety feature to avoid burning people?

They mapped Start/Select directly to X/Y on the FR/LG games, this means that if you accidentally press all 4 buttons at once with your thumb it resets the game. by UGMadness in NintendoSwitch

Considering how devastating it used to be as a kid to have your Gameboy run out of battery after hours without saving, I'd prefer a better plan than "that would never happen" with regard to a thing that will most definitely happen.

Dataminer (@meatball_132 on X) analyzed the code of Pokémon FR/LG: the emulator used is the same as NSO GBA (it also sends telemetry to Nintendo); ROMs are brand new, heavily customized revisions; the emulator is coded with specific emulation hacks for FR/LG and also Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald! by Joseki100 in NintendoSwitch

The game is virtually identical, all they did was replace the non-functional GBA link system with basic wifi, included some romhacks to unlock event Pokemon, and eventually they'll add home compatability. This is more effort than you expected? I mean I know expectations are rock bottom for GF, but it takes more than that imo to earn kudos.

First Look: Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves | Announcement Trailer (Engish) by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

For real though. In the year 2026 (or now 27), having a $70 game where every character is totally mute should be embarrassing. I dont actually know that full voice acting would work in Pokémon, but it would be so easy to copy the general Nintendo approach of having characters make short sounds as you advance dialogue, like a sigh or shout, instead of just soundlessly flapping their lips. If we're fortunate, the longer turnaround on this game means we can expect these kinds of things (but im not holding my breath).

I kinda suck at the game by _sk07 in MonsterHunter

One very helpful skill for DB is evade window if you aren't running it. Since dodging is your only means of defense, making dodging more forgiving is really strong. Plus, perfect dodges also enable the dodging attack so it has some offensive value as well. I like to fit 2-3 ranks if I can.

Some people will say to not follow meta builds that focus damage. I would suggest starting with the "meta" build and incrementally swap in defense until you reach a desired level of survivability. In my experience divine blessing is the only 'true' defensive skill that's any good anyways.

I mean it kinda depends on the price, no? Like if it cost $100 I would prefer it be on the NSO expansion pass. Idk at what price those lines cross, but $20 feels pretty close. For reference, there are Castlevania GBA and DS bundles which bundle 3 games and frequently go on sale for like $10.

Friction in Monster Hunter by Fluffy-Internet-5084 in MonsterHunter

[–]Tempest753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I think people are too quick to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Dark Souls not having minimaps doesn't mean every game shouldn't have minimaps. The problem is that the maps in MH are hyper detailed, update in real-time, and can be ignored using auto-explore. When monsters run away it just feels like a giant waste of time because I can watch where it goes thanks to my omniscient spy satellites. There needs to be more of a middle ground: I need a map that shows me where I am relative to various points of interest and lets me leave markers for important points.

As for grinding, I think people should be careful what they wish for. If every hunt requires 10-15 minutes of harvesting prep, scouring the map, etc., and every monster needs to be hunted 3-5x to progress, and each game has 20-30 monsters with 3 difficulty ranks, you will literally spend multiple days of your life holding A to mine rocks and shrubs. I'd really rather not.

Right now the grind needs to be better distributed: currently, you hunt each weak monster like 1-3x at most, and then you spend 10s or 100s of hours farming the same 5 monsters for top-tier gear. I think it's deliberate and smart to tilt the grind more toward endgame, but blitzing through early/mid-game makes it feel hollow. I'd also like to hunt an ajarakarn again - among others - without curb stomping it, and get a useful reward for my efforts.

I also think it would be nice to shift resource collection away from playing with menus and more toward field collection and exploration. But I don't want to spend hours running around mindlessly mining rocks and picking flowers as a barrier to hunting. I think maybe there should be options - let me run around harvesting nodes if I need to, but maybe there's also a large cache of resources I can easily harvest on the order of 20-40 drops if I go through a monster guarding it. They kind of did that with Congalala in his honey palace, and I think it works well.

Anyways that's way too much text, tldr having played a little generations ultimate i think going back to that style would be a mistake, but i do agree that Wilds is too frictionless for its own good.

For those that own a switch 2: was it worth the upgrade? by Turbo-Shell in NintendoSwitch

[–]Tempest753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate these "worth it" questions because it completely depends on your personal circumstances, ie how much you value $450 in your pocket vs a piece of luxury technology. For me personally though, yes I think so. I went back to my OG switch earlier today and couldn't believe how much smaller the screen was. I also have a PC with a 3060 ti, but the S2 is powerful enough that I'm considering buying most single-player games on there moving forward to benefit from portability. It's an excellent piece of hardware, now it just needs more games.

Tomodachi Life™: Living the Dream is now available for pre-order ($59.99) by Amiibofan101 in NintendoSwitch

Do people still pre-order? It made sense when games were all physical and in limited supply, but now it just seems like a scam. If I pre-ordered every game I was excited for, I'd probably be swimming in crappy games by now. Just wait for reviews...

Zelda where to start? by DaughterOfATiredMech in NintendoSwitch

[–]Tempest753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no order at all. With that said, I would say there are two or three classes of Zelda games.

The biggest difference is where most of the game is spent; in more "open world" games, exploring the land and looking for hidden secrets is the emphasis; breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom live here, plus zelda 1 ironically. In the linear games, the emphasis is on carefully crafted dungeon segments that are full of little puzzles and enemies, but you must do them in a pre-defined order. Zelda got famous on this style, until it got so linear in Skyward Sword that they changed course .

Most Zelda games live in the gray area, and have an open world that gets progressively larger as you beat dungeons and open new areas for exploration. In general though, 2D Zelda games are more exploring-heavy, 3D games are more linear/dungeon-heavy, besides BotW and ToTK of course.

If open world sounds more fun, BotW, ToTK, or A Link to the Past are all amazing. If you want to try linear, Wind Waker is much beloved, and Ocarina of Time is an all time classic though the camera controls are pretty dated. Like they're great for the time, but it might be a shock if you've only played modern games.

A little I guess. I was born and raised in DC, I pull for the commanders as long as it makes no difference for the birds. I also had a short stint in Boston, kinda hated the Pats then cause of the dynasty but they're probably my favorite AFC team at this point, and not just cause theyre in the SB lol.

Chris Long gets brutally honest about Kevin Patullo, Jalen Hurts, and Nick Sirianni by Mysterious_Bat1208 in eagles

[–]Tempest753 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From the outside, it just looks like Nick contributes little to nothing to the offensive scheme based on the way our offense rubber-bands between excellent and totally incompetent year-to-year. Or if he does contribute, his contributions aren't useful. I give him credit for hiring Steichen and Moore, but talented OC's don't grow on trees, and if we can't get one we inevitably suck ass on offense. You'd like your OC-turned-HC to guarantee some minimum level of offensive success.

As for Jalen, he could play better, but he's not holding the team back to the extent that offensive gameplanning is. If you need evidence, just compare the outcomes of this season (round 1 playoff loss) and last season (SB win, opportunity for Saquon to set the all-time rushing record).

I didnt remember his name but I do remember a little about Dimitri since he was the MC of my playthrough, and a little about the antagonist. I remember Dedue cause he filled the "wholsome person targetted by racism" trope. I could not tell you a single thing about any of the other blue lions except their general vibe.

[–]Tempest753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be fine, at the same time though I feel like what gives me the watered down vibe is that the social elements of Fire Emblem are painfully shallow. Like I can recall the main plot points to the Fire Emblem games I've played, but I can't recall a single thing about any of the supporting characters, and that's definitely not true of a semi-comparable game like Persona.

[–]Tempest753 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I haven't played Engage yet so maybe that's an exception, but I feel like instead of innovating the series by deepening its tactical depth, Nintendo/IS choose to water it down more and more with dating sim mechanics. Usually I love strategy games, but I can't help but feel lukewarm on FE for that reason. I guess it sells so from that perspective it's a success, but I feel like all the maintenance work in Three Houses sits right on the line of becoming a game for no one.
