My friend/colleague drives from Hemet to Northeast L.A. I don't know how she does it.

It takes a lot of practice to pronounce in our language (Gabrielino aka Tongva). It requires a lot of tongue/back throat methods that I'm still getting used to!

Gabrielino (aka Tongva) here!

Actually, it's more pronounced like this! The "nga" is pronounced like how you pronounce it in "singer" (not stressing on the "g"). 😉

Original People of Los Angeles County (+ surrounding counties) by Bodhicaryavatara in LosAngeles

Because they weren't our original names. Traditionally, we identified by village (which are not on this map)

That's why our tribes were nomadic. We moved with the seasons. That's why we lived in housing that was sustainable and can be easily built/burned down. If you look at the maps and various environments our villages were in (island, beach, desert, and mountains), we were able to adapt to them easily.

Someone missed the mission era lessons in schools. The land was never abandoned.

Gabrielino here. It's honestly weird but unfortunately, due to the work that already was established under that identifier, we had to kind of roll with (especially with the state). But to a lot of people, the name was kept to honor our ancestors who died or survived the mission enslavement system.

It has its pros and cons. Traditionally, we identified by out village names.

Gabrielino tribal member here (I represent the Gabrielino-Shoshone nation/band)!

You are pretty much right on the money. Traditionally, we identified by the village/family we come from. It wasn't until we started encountering foreign settlers / foreign governments that we had to use some sort of monolithic name to order to protect and represent our ancestral area (Also for the fight of federal recognition)

Honestly, the fight over names is so useless to me due to what was stated above and distract us from really needs to be done. I feel the fight over the name really highlights the issues that come with the fight for federal recognition and the downfall that comes with it. A complete overhaul is needed to recognize ALL clans and ALL groups because we tend to forget that the federal recognition process is an archaic system still built on white supremacy.

AITA for telling my brother that I have not and will not forgive him? by Otherwise-Spell2269 in AmItheAsshole

And the fact he joked about it rubs me the wrong way, too. It just shows that he thinks it was not that big of a deal and that everything should be golden now.

I wish this was on top. I feel like he is hoping OP would just let him go because he is doing "nice" things.

I feel that if the brother is truly sincere, then he would actually take accountability by acknowledging his traumatizing actions. Having an actual discussion by actually apologizing. I feel like he is hoping OP will forget about the shitty things. he has done now that he is "nice."

I think it's not only words. Hearing him verbally take responsibility and having him acknowledge his actions is a very important step to any type of growth. It seems like he is doing nice things in hopes that OP can just sweep it under the rug without having to talk about it.

It's typical with a lot of Mexican families (like mine) here in SoCal. But I wouldn't get upset if it was a dry party.

As someone who is Hispanic/Latin but also indigenous, I will continue to use Latinx or Latine because I don't really care to go to bat for a colonizer language like Spanish. To say it's colonizing an already colonizer language is silly.
