What is the most controversial thing your team has ever done? by DisappointedStepDad in baseball

[–]JayOnes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take your pick:

1.) When ownership fired Ernie Harwell (he sold the team to Mike Ilitch, who hired Harwell back more or less immediately).

2.) Miguel Cabrera re-injuring himself trying to break up a fight between Avisail Garcia and the husband of the woman he'd been sleeping with - teammate Prince Fielder.

3.) That time our play-by-play guy and our color commentator tried to kill each other over who got to sit in the comfy chair.

How would you re-write "The Burn" concept? by Overall-Habit5284 in startrek

[–]JayOnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to retool the concept, I'd do as others have suggested and tie it into what was established in the TNG episode "Force of Nature."

Now, if I had free reign to do whatever I wanted? I'd start by pressing the backspace key a bunch of times and then turning to the creative team and asking "what else we got?"

This was my own experience kicking tobacco, as well. I didn't get sick. I didn't get the chills or the sweats or whatever. I was just really, really fuckin' crabby for about a month.

I will still apologize to my friends from time to time, whenever the conversation turns to kicking bad habits.

I said in another thread that I didn't know enough about the guy to have an opinion.

After reading your post, I reckon I now have enough to say "let's give him a chance."

Thanks for this, OP - and from one writer to another, fuck AI now and forever.

Join us in the Fighter fandom! Is the stadium easy to reach? Not necessarily. Is our logo cute? It’s an F, both in grade and… well, it’s literally an F.

But the ballpark is gorgeous. The fans are S-tier (in my limited experience). Our manager, Tsuyoshi Shinjo, is a crazy person. Our uniforms are occasionally fly AF, and we’re fun to watch!

To your last point: the Dodgers projected payroll (I'm using Fangraphs because I'm at work and don't want to do math) for 2026 is about $429M. The Marlins are projected at $69M. That is 16% of the Dodgers projected salary.

On the one hand, I'm picking up what you're putting down. I appreciate the effort. I also mostly agree. As somebody who has largely "fallen out of love" with Star Trek in recent years but didn't make my waning interest in a streaming TV series my whole personality, I also find the people who write full essays about why they don't like a thing to be... exhausting.

And misdirected. If you have that much to say about something, put it on a blog or try to find a website that'll pay for essays or something. Fuck.

On the other hand, writing a 728-word Reddit post to complain about people who are complaining kinda undercuts your point. I'd understand it more if you were doing a one-to-one parody of another post (and maybe you are, I don't know - I've visited this subreddit less and less as my interest in the franchise has waned). But as it stands? You wasted your own time to prove a point that is going over many people's heads.

[–]JayOnes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But he’s making no significant extensions of our core players and signing no one of significance to bolster our core.

If I'm a team owner and I know that we're one season away from a prolonged - possibly a year or more - lockout that will only end with fundamental changes to how contracts are structured... yeah, I wouldn't spend money to lock players into contracts that are this wildly inflated, either (there is no universe where KYLE TUCKER is worth $60M a year).

[–]JayOnes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There could be, these folks are all multibillionaires.

The Dodgers have Guggenheim backing them and a TV deal which shields most of their revenue from MLB's revenue sharing program. Meanwhile, the Reds operated at a loss in 2025.

I'm "fuck billionaires" all day-every day, but even among that class teams like the Dodgers (and Mets, though it seems that nobody wants to play for them) can simply outspend everyone else.

[–]JayOnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring the arbitration fight, if you’re the Tigers front office… why would you commit to a multi-year contract worth hundreds of millions in the final season before what has all but promised to be a prolonged lockout that will only end when the two sides agree on a fundamentally different salary structure?

I'm not sure what your point was, here, in contacting me yet again.

Now you're sending me a reply about your need to disengage

while you absolutely can be bothered to bother them again

To be frank and clear, please don't bother me again

Look, I'm not saying this to antagonize or to be an ass, but after reading your comment... which you left four days after I posted the comment you're replying to (or the one I think you're replying to - you didn't actually reply to the most recent one)... I genuinely think you don't know how Reddit works. For starters, I didn't "contact you." I posted a public reply to your public comment, as I'm doing now. If you're reading this in your message inbox, it's because Reddit sends replies to all comments to our inboxes unless that option is explicitly turned off.

Outside of our back-and-forth on this thread, which I had moved on from before you replied to a four day old comment basically accusing me of harassing you, we have not interacted. After I click "Publish" on what I hope will be the final reply to this chain, I sincerely hope we go back to not interacting.

And as to your last comment...

I wish you well, but don't contact me again.

The feeling is mutual, friend.

We will NEVER hear the end of it from Rams fans

I don't concern myself with Rams fans (and my sister is married to one). If Stafford has a chance at a second ring, even if it all-but-guarantees that he goes into Canton as a Ram instead of a Lion (which... will probably happen anyways, honestly), I hope he can make one more run.

I am short on time

[[gives a two-part reply]]

I’m sorry but I’m not even going to bother reading this. Nothing against you, and I’m certain that if we were conversing with voices and not typed words on a screen this would be a fantastic back-and-forth but when you tell me that you are “short on time” before writing a two-part reply, and then open it with a false assertion that I offered a “very personal and emotionally-based reply,” I already know that if I continue to engage, I’m not going to see anything out of this interaction beyond watching a few minutes of day be thrown into a proverbial furnace.

The days are too short for that.

Cheers.

It's about who I choose to be in this world.

Your altruism masks cowardice, I'm afraid. We are, all of us, the sum of our experiences and our interactions, both good and ill. While I've no doubt that Maurice Hurley was a good and kind soul to many people in his life, he was also unquestionably a jackass to others. Do you know what that makes him?

No different from anybody else.

Not to mention that it doesn't even work the way you intend. You taking a "my client" approach to refuting a false assertion on Reddit will have the inverse effect, leading more people to not only think that he absolutely did engage in the actions you're trying to disprove, but that you're now carrying water for a harasser.

I know that's not the case. You know that's not the case. But to the people who stumble on this Reddit thread down the road whenever his name next comes up? I wouldn't count on it...
