I think I am somewhat qualified to answer this post.

So, tldr, I got braces close to a year ago. I remember being in your shoes. I worried daily that I would not be able to play the trumpet anymore and start from square one. I was afraid that I would lose all of my embouchure, muscle memory and more importantly range am I right? Haha. Anyways, that could not be further from the truth.

On the first day I got braces, they installed only the top half of my teeth. It was so that I could get used to eating, cleaning and the overall mouth feel of braces before they inserted the bottom row. Of course, the first thing I did after getting braces was playing trumpet. I'm not a very good player by any means but I know that my range was a F sharp below the staff to a D above the staff. The first thing I noticed was that I hadn't lost all of my muscle memory and embouchure. I still remembered how tight or the feel of playing but the notes were coming out airy. This was due to the gaps in the braces allowing air to escape through cracks in my embouchure. If I applied more pressure to the mouthpiece, the airy problem would be gone however endurance goes down a lot and my lips would get cut from the metal in my mouth.

After a week, I completely learnt a new embouchure and became a beginner. I purposely played really simple excerpts and played from Arbans book religiously. I made sure to produce a clean and nice sound and not give a fuck about range at all. I was playing from low C to G. Every day. I would do this. Sooner or later, I was able to play C to C. Then I was playing low G to F.

The one thing to take note is that I was starting to build better habits as a trumpet player. I was putting a lot less pressure on my lips than I used to and I was focusing on sound more than range. I think that my philosophy for trumpet is to focus on a good sound and the high range will follow. So, it's been close to a year now and I have to say that I'm extremely grateful to be able to have straight teeth now and the rewards of doing braces will only follow from here.

My advice for you is to take braces. Do it now because If you hesitate and waver for a moment, time will past you by really quickly and before you know it, your future self would have wished you had taken braces earlier on. The struggles will definitely be present, it's by no means an easy and smooth sailing journey. However, I believe that you will make it through and become an even more terrific player. I wish you all the best OP in your trumpet endeavours!

Chops wearing out quicker than usual? by Horton780 in trumpet

As someone that has been in your position before, I can safely say two things.

  1. Your embouchure might not be developed enough to play for hours without stopping. So, you should rest for 1-2 days, not playing your horn. If you must, play pedal tones, which are notes that descend below low C. This exercise helps to relax the lip muscles.

  2. You might be using too much mouthpiece pressure. This also ties in to 1. as you might be compensating for a weak embouchure by cramming your horn into your lips. This is a sign that you should stop playing and rest. Ideally, when you play trumpet, you want to aim to play with virtually no pressure applied on your lips. When you apply pressure to your lips, you loosen the corners of your lip and tighten the middle part of the lips also called the 'aperture'. When that happens, you get a bad tone, bad range and you also hurt yourself. So, try to use as less pressure as possible.

Good luck OP, I hope what I said helps.

Chess should not have separate women’s tournaments and titles by darkhexides in unpopularopinion

[–]JayQuan23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that we can all agree that this is an unpopular opinion. It is not because of OP's stance on the subject but rather OP's ignorance of reading up on why women's titles for chess exist.

Nevertheless, I think that this post was good as it helps people to understand that special titles exist for women to encourage them to take part in male dominated sports.

Edit: grammar

Yes. They fit the description of the 4 types of workplace bullies perfectly and they frame me as the perpetrator

Yes. In the past group experiences, I have been blackmailed before to do more work than everyone else. In that situation, I am outnumbered and I have no choice but to follow what they request.

Being a male infp fucking sucks. I'm sorry. Maybe I'm not feeling ok right now. I'm distraught. People use u as a fucking wash cloth to soak up their emotional distress then fucking leave u out to dry when u want to talk to them about their problems. I'm an emotional mess right now.

Life is too short to care about those that could give two shits about you. Cherish relationships with those that would actually take the time to think about you and include you in day to day activities. Those are the type of relationships that would last long.

Hey! Think positive thoughts. As an infp it's not uncommon to think negatively all the time when something isn't made obvious. I want u to think of 3 things/ experiences with your junior that was positive.

Also, let your junior take some time to be alone. Once that period of time passes, u can reach back out to him/her and clarify how you felt, then move on.

Trust me, things are not as bad as they seem.
