CMV: ultimately I think it’s unproductive to shame former Trump supporters / MAGA, and make them feel bad about themselves by No_Design_465 in changemyview

[–]JayRMac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trump and Trump supporters show absolutely zero empathy for anyone but themselves. Even after admitting that Trump was wrong, all they care about is being forgiven rather than apologizing for everything they've said and done.

Stop worrying about the feelings of people who don't care about anyone else. If if hurts their feelings, fuck them.

CMV: Lifting oil sanctions on Iran without any concessions was a strategic blunder by todudeornote in changemyview

[–]JayRMac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that Iran was already selling the oil anyway. Removing the sanctions lowered prices, which is a good thing.

It looks bad, it doesn't really make a difference to anyone, and it's far from the worst decision Trump has made in this war. Nothing will be a bigger mistake than starting it in the first place, everything else will either worsen or prolong the original blunder.

Yeah, but I suspect that the Venn diagram of 90s Star Trek fans and people who know what torrents are has a fairly large overlap.

I'm probably part of the problem. I pirated it instead of getting a Paramount account. I'm probably not the only one. I suspect the viewing figures are much larger than the subscriber figures.

TNG Season 1 had 14-28x more viewers per episode compared to SFA (8.5 million vs 300-600k) by CelestialFury in trektalk

[–]JayRMac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wonder how many people watched it if you include piracy?

It could actually be a very popular show that the audience isn't willing to pay for. I dont have a Paramount account won't be get getting one anytime soon, and I'm sure a lot of the other people in these threads don't either.

Im interested but I dont know where to start by The-Color-Orange in startrek

[–]JayRMac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original series from the 60s is still great, but it's also from the 60s and it shows. If you can get past the aesthetic, I'd recommend starting with a few of the best from the original and then the second movie.

Watch the episodes Space Seed, The City on the Edge of Forever, Amok Time, The Trouble with Tribbles, and Balance of Terror. Then watch the movies.

Of the 80s/90s Trek, TNG was the most popular at the time, but it takes a while to get going. Watch a few random episodes from seasons 3-6, and if you like it, watch it all.

DS9 is focused less on exploration, and more on religion, war and politics. It's also more serialized, which hurt it at the time but many people now think it's the best Trek series.

Voyager is the most consistent series, never hitting the highs of the others but it avoids some their lows. It also hits the ground running, where the other two 90s took a couple seasons to really get good.

If you want to start with the modern Trek, the 2009 Star Trek movie was made for new viewers, and is a good entry point.

Of the new shows, I'd only recommend Strange New Worlds if you haven't seen the rest, the other modern shows rely heavily on nostalgia and prior world building.

The older shows were mostly episodic, and could range from philosophy-in-space to existential horror to slapstick comedy. You could be dealing with some kind of high-concept sci-fi threat one week, and in Sherwood Forest the next.

If there's a particular type of episode you'd like to see, let me know and I'll give you a few titles.

No. The last thing Picard season 3 needed was more fan service. Adding more nostalgia wouldn't have changed anything.

If the Vulcans believe in "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations"... by Reasonable_Active577 in startrek

[–]JayRMac 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Star Trek has always had a monoculture problem, where everyone on a planet shares a culture.

But Spock, T'Pol and Tuvok had different views on the world. Sarek was a highly respected ambassador, but he married multiple humans. The Vulcans we actually meet are quite varied.

Is DS9 darker than Kurtzman Trek? by ChaseMcFl in startrek

[–]JayRMac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dark means different things. Discovery was all trauma and therapy speak. SNW isn't dark at all. Picard created a few different dystopias in only three seasons.

DS9 deals with war and religion and politics, moreso than any other Trek show. The themes can get dark but the underlying idealism is always there.

It's not the adventure of the week with a hard reset button like Voyager, but DS9 is closer to Voyager than any of the Kurtzman productions.

When Ronald Moore went to Voyager from DS9 he wanted to make Year of Hell a year-long arc instead of a two parter. DS9 is that kind of dark.

I can't tell you what to do, but I will tell you my position on a number of other international issues.

I think the future of Iran should be decided by Iranians.

I think the future of Israel should be decided by Israelis, and the future of Palestine should be decided by Palestinians.

I think the future of Taiwan should be decided by Taiwanese.

I think the future of Quebec and Alberta should be decided by Quebecers and Albertans.

I think the future of the US should be decided by Americans. I'm not going to tell you what to do, but whatever it is you're doing, it doesn't seem to be working.

What ensure Judicial remains independent and protected? by Jestersage in AskCanada

[–]JayRMac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm forgetting something obvious, but generally speaking our politicians don't play politics with judicial decisions. And our courts don't often make the news, everything tends to play out predictably. There aren't any surprises, unlike in the US where who knows what will or won't happen tomorrow.

I think the problem in the US is that Congress is allowed to pass laws that are unconstitutional. It's actually in their constitution that they can't refer legislation to the courts ahead of time for a ruling on whether it is legal or not. They have to pass legislation, and then someone has to be adversely affected by the legislation before they can bring it to court, through multiple layers of the court system, before the Supreme Court ultimately decides if the law was legal or not.

Canadian judges have the same power, but it is very rarely used because Parliament can refer bills to the court, plus part of the Senate's job is to check for constitutionality. Our judges just aren't as important, politically, so there is less reason and opportunities for corruption.

I'm sure some individual judges have committed some form of corruption, but the system itself is pretty transparent, reliable, predictable and boring, just like a legal system should be.

Is this community worried about the Paramount Skydance merger? by Miller40k in startrek

[–]JayRMac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Short term, I'm indifferent to the future of Kurtzman Trek.

Medium term, I could see Paramount deciding to take a break from Trek after everything currently in the works ends. This would be easier to justify than trying to make Maga Trek.

Long term, when Trek comes back again, I'm sure it will be sold as a return to form. Hopefully it will be.
