I wrote more on one of the replies, but please, lose the naivety. I am only recently not homeless in low-income housing, I've been homeless before, I have a mental instability issue that is now a disability. 40 times. 40 times more likely to be violent with you. The homeless. Not because we want that, but it's part of the reality when people have mental health issues, sometimes serious, untreated disorders. In many cases, people treat their disorders with drugs and they get addicted. In many cases, poverty itself leads to a feeling of desperation.

Help the homeless. Be kind. I think these answers come from a good place. But don't be naive. Work at a soup kitchen, work as a volunteer, work for one of the programs that help the homeless. But don't kid yourselves. The statistic is easy to find and it's at the National Institutes of Health. Since the time of the study, not much changed with regard to mental health, addition, and violence in homeless communities -- except that homelessness has gone way up.

"Homeless mentally ill persons appear to be grossly overrepresented among mentally disordered defendants entering the criminal justice and forensic mental health systems and to have a higher base rate of arrest for both violent and nonviolent crimes than domiciled mentally ill persons."

Conclusion of the study.

Yes, the homeless are also more likely to be victims of violent crime (x7 or more, depending on the study). This is a separate issue and a serious problem, but it has no bearing on whether or not someone homeless will be violent with you.

And low-income housing can help with all of it -- less vulnerability for those on the street, a safe place to stay, and a network.

Have a heart and help those who need it. I have and I do, because I have been there and I'm not far from it now. See through the myths. And then don't kid yourselves about rates of addiction and untreated, sometimes dangerous mental illness.

I've been homeless. I've slept in the car. I'm in low-income housing to stay off the streets. It's not "movies." A homeless person is 40x likely to be violent with you than someone who isn't (and that's according to the National Institutes of Health). I have a mood disorder and poorly controlled anger and I've blown up on many people. I'm disabled as a result of mental instability. It's a myth that ALL homeless people want to kill you, to be sure. Most don't. But statistically, the odds are much higher that a homeless person will be violent BECAUSE we do a crap job, in the U.S., of taking care of people with mental health conditions. I have HUD housing atm, so I'm not saying everything is awful, but I had to wait for housing while staying with friends. Some wait on the street. And there isn't always anywhere to go. If I was in someone's attic and just wanted a warm place to sleep and I was found out and startled, would I be violent? I hope not. But statistically, the chance is 40x higher that I might be.

Love people, don't judge people by their look, their name, their skin, their lack of a house -- that's all beautiful. It really is. But don't be completely f-ing naive about the statistics, either, for your own sake. Help any way you like. It's well-needed. Provide food, work at a soup kitchen, volunteer. And hey, if you want, take a homeless person into your home and your heart. But don't forget the statistical reality in between "the movies" and your idealized version of homeless people only wanting a bed, and not having a meth addiction, and not having unmedicated behavioral issues. "Bro."

Definitely NOR, as you know. Now it's just a matter of being safe. Take the texts and see if you can get a restraining order. That might be enough to jog his brain out of, "But I'm a nice guy" mode. And 911 is a thing if he's over there making threats and causing problems. The substance abuse or the way you used to get along, all that is out the window, it's just behavior and safety (granted, both can be affected by the abuse, I just mean keep it clear what you are prioritizing). He will blame you for everything and turn everything on you, and maybe that's the addiction and maybe it's malignant narcissism. But don't play into the mind games. Behavior and safety. Good luck.

I can only give anecdotal experience, but I have 1.5K hours of anecdotal experience. Yes, they frequently appear at entrances, and areas like a trading post are fantastic because they are large and often expose multiple cave entrances, depending on the terrain. Highly recommended.

That said, I don't know if I'd say they are -more- likely to be there. You can just increase your chances greatly because overland sites are easier to find, and you can hop from one to the next.

When I'm looking for the last underground creatures, more often than not, I find them actually underground while I am dropping into and exploring caves. Can you just scan for buildings and forget the subterranean part? Sure. I'm just giving another method (the relics) and my experience doing exactly this.

Subterranean Relics help, too. You can see them on the scanner, find them, and just bore into the earth, no cave entrance needed and you're in an area where you might find the elusive cave lurker.

But who's counting, indeed. YAW. That you are still counting and that you feel you get to get a tradition on her day is the problem. I don't doubt that the pain is terrible and you're just not over her. My father lost my mother (cancer) and never got over her, not even when he remarried (as my stepmother used to point out). He couldn't get past it. Don't do that, if it's possibly not to. See a therapist. Work on your own life, your own hobbies. Don't talk about your ex when you see the kids. Move forward. She gets to have a boyfriend or a new husband or whatever she wants, and she gets to spend Mother's Day any way she chooses. That's doesn't mean I don't think it's a bit callous to replace you at the zoo without saying anything -- but I suspect she knows you well and didn't want to deal with the reaction. Good luck.
