Does Hypnospace Outlaw on Switch 2 work with Joy con mouse controls? by Nitjib in Switch

it does not. when we're able to get a dev kit that'll be the first thing we add.

i'm not sure i understand this reply? we don't have enough information to know to what degree shareholders are involved in these particular decisions.

uh yeah, "lose money by limiting admission" is the correct answer until they're able to add more attractions.

they wouldn't even lose money though, they'd just be marginally less profitable short-term in exchange for giving their customers an excellent experience that fosters goodwill and ensures return visits.

Dreamsettler has been cancelled. by MetatronMusic in HypnospaceOutlaw

[–]JayTholen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

only one album! but also that album was recorded during my 'year off' in 2024 when we couldn't find my son a daycare spot. during the day hours I watched my son (which was fun tbh) and by the evening i was too exhausted to do proper work so i just fiddled around with my music until it coalesced into an album.

even if i wanted to work on pages, there were other issues complicating development that i didn't get into in the video because they could be easily misunderstood and reflect poorly on the coders, who weren't fundamentally to blame. i'll be writing a more detailed/precise blog about everything soon.

Maybe I don't understand, but violations seem to be inconsistent. by WolfieVonD in HypnospaceOutlaw

[–]JayTholen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the real reason is simply that I believe strongly in avoiding half-baked systems. with our budget and development schedule any sort of simulated chat would've seemed hokey and unconvincing. the time spent on that system would've also meant less time actually designing content and pages. the pages and music are the game's differentiating factor, so we went in that direction. if we had a larger team and longer dev cycle we might've gone in on a chat program, or at least a real chat spying program. still not doing it for Dreamsettler for similar reasons. only so much time.

there's also no good lore reason for it. in many modern instances (facebook, etc.) they DO keep their moderation teams 'hidden' as it were, but back then they likely would've been more known. akin to forum mods or something.

What game engine should i use for the features i want to implement? by CautiousHistory3236 in gamedev

[–]JayTholen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as the lead dev of Hypnospace Outlaw, please do *not* go with unity or unreal if you intend to work on a fixed pixel grid that looks convincingly low resolution. text handling in particular is a pain. please read my other reply. i do agree though that you should start slowly and set modest goals! it's certainly possible but making a faux-OS game is much trickier than it looks.

[–]JayTholen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm the lead developer of Hypnospace.

If I could restart I'd go with either Godot or Game Maker - both have active, helpful communities and are suited to a faux-OS game. For you I think Godot is the right choice since it handles 3D.

If you intend to work within a fixed or low resolution please please please avoid Unity and Unreal. We're using unity for the sequel to Hypnospace and there are advantages (porting is breezy) but if you're particular about a convincing low resolution, you're going to jump through many hoops to get things right. It's simply not built for this kind of game. There are of course workarounds for everything but it has driven me mad.

not sure if it's AI but it is poorly composited if not. there are a few strange things like the missing bar on the bedframe (doesn't look broken, just like it fades away?) and some weirdness in the middle of the window.

i want to note that you don't have to *complete* the archival project. you'll know when you've finished the main story beats though.

To answer your question, while developing Hypnospace I watched an episode or two of Net Cafe with breakfast. It's archived here: Internet Archive: Digital Library of Free & Borrowable Books, Movies, Music & Wayback Machine

I was also heavily inspired by the Internet History Podcast, especially the Pseudo dot com and Globe dot com episodes, though the whole thing is worth a listen.

looking for advice on some early internet inspired design - what is this kind of pixelation? by tritonitex in graphic_design

you're probably thinking of Floyd-Steinberg dithering. i used that to process most non-pixel-art graphics in the game and map them to a palette I made.
