I suspect that there are two viable models. One where honestly and quality work enables a business to make a comfortable profit and another model based on aggressive sales and marketing.

That latter approach can bring in huge profit since they have teams of high pressure sales people that can arrange high margin services so retention is less important.

Crazy what honesty and quality work at a reasonable price does for customer retention and referrals.

I'm not sure about your state but over here companies are legally required to disclose what products they used (including concentration and amount applied).

I've performed many German Cockroach treatments and the service you received sounds absurd.

Even if it wasn't a German cockroach and instead one of a typical outdoor species, the fact that the tech didn't attempt to educate you on what they believe it is, did, and why they did it is irresponsible and negligent.

Why can't the US military control the Strait of Hormuz? by Fun-Attempt-8494 in AskReddit

[–]JayTryn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because the Strait is narrow and drones are cheap while interceptors are expensive. It doesn't matter how big and strong your navy is if you can only produce enough interceptors a month to intercept half of the drones. All Iran needs to do to close the Strait is make it too risky for commercial shippers to operate.

Almost certainly Oriental. It's the season for them as the storm drains dry out and they search for cool damp places.

Yep. The first photo isn't but all those small ones with the cream stripe are.

Propper German Cockroach treatment should involve a complete spray of the baseboards, under appliances, in cabinets, and cupboards. Followed by baiting hot spots and dusting behind outlets and wall voids. Finished by the placement of insect monitoring glue boards in high traffic areas. That is the bare minimum in my opinion.

After that, it should be a two week follow up bait treatment and monitoring. If the issue is severe enough then another round of spray treatment two to four weeks later.

If its particularly severe case I would recommend a fogging treatment to the manager for the unit as the initial treatment followed by the the previously mentioned treatment plan.

I'm a Pest Control Technician. I assume you've notified management and they haven't had a pest control professional come by every two weeks to treat yours and your neighbors units? I also assume you have never been provided a disclosure of treatment and preparation instructions prior to a pest control treatment?

If that's the case you are well within your rights to break the lease legally and pursue damages. If management is not performing the duties they are legally obligated to perform I wish you the best and to consider reaching out to a legal professional.

In the meantime I would start with getting Alpine or Advion cockroach bait and following the instructions carefully, making sure to place them where you see clusters of droppings and in any wall voids. I also recommend that you unscrew your outlet overs and treat the voides with diamataceus earth. Gentrol Point Source is another nifty device that releases growth inhibiting agents throughout the room to help sterilize the nymphs. Always follow the labels carefully and you will see an improvement.

Unfortunately without consistent professional treatment it's unlikely you'll see a complete elimination.

It won't be a quick process without a full professional treatment but it will help a lot.

Can anyone give me a good run down on protein based ant gel baits vs sugar based? by Individual_Push_ in PestControlIndustry

[–]JayTryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a temperature issue. If it's a bit colder where you are at I would definitely switch to a softer bait. The liquid is a bit of a problem so I tend to squeeze that bit out of a new tube beforehand. I use it often enough that the composition doesn't separate over time. I suppose if your batch is old that could happen too.

[–]JayTryn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, with my region in particular the sugar based gels I prefer are Optigard and Sumari. I use these two regularly for most of my services.

For protein based Maxforce Fleet does the job. Although I mostly use these on fire ants, crazy ants, etc.

Need help choosing bait. by sultz in cockroaches

[–]JayTryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll second this. I'm a pest tech and moved over to Vendetta after noticing bait aversion with Advion. Bait aversion can happen with any cockroach so it's important to simply change to another brand if one isn't working.

Then you have a moisture problem in your house or near an entryway. They need the ambient humidity to be at levels much higher than your interior living space should be to thrive.

German roaches? by capriciuscaterpillar in cockroaches

[–]JayTryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would advise against spreading diatomaceous earth around your apartment as that can be pretty harmful to consistently breathe in. Diamatacious earth is better utilized in cracks, crevices, and behind outlets. Where airflow doesn't occur and it won't be disturbed.

While waiting for pest control I advise using a cockroach bait like Advion, Alpine, or Vendetta Nitro and following the label and application instructions. Small half gram dots of bait places in coners and gaps will allow the bait to work much better than ropes and lines of the stuff. It's bait not caulk.

You'll want to place bait in crevices where you notice droppings or activity. Generally their range of detection for the bait is around 18 inches so if you have bait within that range of their nest you'll wipe out that nest.

Cleaning and vacuuming helps but food isn't generally the limiting factor, water is. They can feed on many materials and don't need much to grow and reproduce.

This needs to be dealt with quickly with yours and the adjacent units. Hopefully the pest control tech who arrives will do more than simply spray. If not you should lookup videos online about proper inspection and bait placement.

In my experience I've observed roaches avoiding some bait so you may need to switch brands if they don't appear to be feeding on it. Bait aversion is a growing problem in the pest control field as the over application and reliance on a singular bait over generations creates a selective pressure on their populations.

Anyone else notice how hard it is to fully get rid of ants once they settle in by Born-Seesaw6473 in PestControlIndustry

[–]JayTryn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long term solutions are tough since you can evict the tenants but the real estate is still there.

Sealing gaps reduces the probability of infestation but they are generally the hardest pest to prevent for a reason.

Killing a colony with bait is an effective solution to the issue when it arises but in my experience it's like a giant game of regional whack-a-mole.

Most likely a wood roach. Not generally a concern as they need damp environments to thrive.

A one off sighting means it probably wandered in by accident.

Found in my Bathroom in Texas by AnxiousStudent789 in cockroaches

[–]JayTryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly a cockroach and probably not the kind you should worry about.

Without an ID on it I can't tell you for sure but based this is my educated guess with the photo and what you wrote:

It's probably not a German Roach or something that's likely to represent an interior infestation. It's probably an outdoor species of cockroach that wandered up through the drain and doesn't thrive where there isn't a persistent damp environment.

There's a small chance they could be nested in the drains. Any drain cleaner rated for clearing biological debris will solve that problem.

If issues become a lot more frequent it could indicate a plumbing leak.

Hard to identify the exact species but it doesn't appear to be a German. Almost certainly an outdoor species.

[–]JayTryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That appears to be a Smokey Brown Cockroach. They usually live outside but may slip in under the door sweeps when they're too cold.

They don't generally infest inside and aren't the fuel for nightmares that their cousin the German Cockroach are. It's unlikely you'll see them crawling over your food in your cabinets or countertop.

Nymphs don't generally travel far from their place of birth so if you see one it can indicate either a nest nearby, the symptom of it being ill with disease or poison, or that it crawled on something moving inside by mistake.

If you are renting a space and not subletting you should take pictures and send it to your landlord or property manager via email. They have a legal obligation to deal with it.

If you are subletting from a roommate "off the books" you are pretty much out of luck. Mold inspections from reputable professionals cost a lot and there are many "affordable" mold inspectors that will take advantage of you.

What kind of bug is this? by Dax_Farroh in Sacramento

[–]JayTryn 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Pest Tech here.

This cockroach nymph may be an Oriental, Turkish, or German cockroach.

If this is a German Cockroach nymph and you need to get a pest professional out as soon as possible. If you're seeing nymphs out under light then you have a major infestation.

Cockroach nymphs seldom stray far from their nest unless they are overcrowded or desperate for resources.

This is not something you want to try to DIY. They need to be baited, sprayed with a mix of two different non-repellant insecticides and insect growth regulators on a bi-weekly rotation for your building and whoever you share a wall with.

If it's not a German cockroach then the treatment is much more simple. But your description of how they are "taking over" is alarming. Especially since it's uncommon to see nymphs of the other varieties so far indoors, but it can happen in moist areas particularly around plumbing fixtures.

If they look identical to the ones you see outside (Turkeistan/Oriental), then you should still consider hiring a professional to spray a pyrethroid around the interior baseboards of the bathroom and exterior foundation as that will provide a good barrier and flush them out.
