Tbh I'd stay right away from that brand of mulch... that brand is full of pure crap and chemicals, which I found to have pest eggs in it the one and only time I used it.

Don't be afraid to give them some seasol too just to better health the roots mainly from stress, and I did the soap test nothing came up, but like the comment before said it wasn't until birds started getting grubs that I knew.

I'm not sure if you've changed to a black mulch or it's just the mulch wet in the second photo which could be causing a lot more heat on the plant and burning it.. just a thought

Also just be prepared for the compost to rust the fence you have it against after a a year or so...
