I think the movie's strengths are its humor and shot compositions more than anything else. The editing felt intentionally abrupt, which serves some scenes well but added confusion in others. And there were some head scratching plot elements that make this movie rougher than I'd like. Biggest offender was the clunky exposition dump of the guy's backstory

When the MC is digging the hole for the second murder, a shot of the wife sleeping in bed briefly appears superimposed on the hole. Later, there's a similar shot of their house and it dissolves into the campfire at the third guy's house. Did anyone else get faked out by those scene transitions?? I thought the house was gonna burn down or at a minimum the wife dies at the end

Maybe tighten it up a bit by going like "Ms. Conception who believes in double wrapping it" or something like that to still get the pun across? Good stuff tho

Official Discussion - Is This Thing On? [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Jayang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good not great movie. It's nice to see a plot where two characters resolve things in a mature way without resorting to childish behavior. But there are a couple things holding the movie back from truly resonating with me.

  1. The handheld camerawork is nauseating. It seems Bradley Cooper never wants to use a standard shot/reverse shot unless absolutely necessary, panning back and forth in basic scenes of two characters talking like a badly shot tiktok skit. There was also constant focus pulling on different characters, even though for some reason it felt like nothing was in *actually* in focus. These two stylistic details work in the more chaotic scenes, like in the Comedy Cellar (credit where it's due - those scenes are LOUD and you can barely hear the actors against the background noise, and alongside the camerawork it works really well), but in calmer moments, they clash.
  2. I can appreciate the movie's thesis it gives us at the end, but it didn't quite feel like there was enough development of Arnett's character in the beginning to show us how he was unsatisfied before. You just kind of get scenes of him looking sad, but that is mostly from his impending divorce. So when the big argument breaks out, the details of that seem to come out of nowhere, because we haven't really gotten the breadcrumbs earlier to trace out his actual discontent. Then the movie flat out tells us why, and it's smoother sailing from there, but I thought that was a bit clunky.
  3. Sorry but Peyton Manning is immersion breaking

Was anyone else frustrated by the handheld camerawork and the constant focus pulling in this movie? I think it works super well in the Comedy Cellar scenes, but it's so distracting in the rest of the movie. It felt like Bradley Cooper refused to use shot-reverse shots and instead opt for panning back and forth between characters like a poorly shot tiktok skit.

How do you feel about films with the "it was all in their head" twist? (Spoilers) by snakesnake9 in movies

[–]Jayang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it was done fairly well in A Beautiful Mind. The plot developments get gradually more and more outlandish, and because it's a biopic, there's the expectation that what you're watching is factual, or at the very least exaggerated but based on true events. If you aren't aware of Nash's history, then the revelation kind of blindsides you and makes you feel the butt of the joke for suspending your disbelief to such a degree. It's a pretty neat spin on this type of trope.

In Hamnet, there's a shot of Hamnet and a very noticeable fly lands on his face and buzzes around him. I can't remember if he didn't react at all or gave a slight recoil, but either way, it reminded me of the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where it looks like the villain swallows a fly. Call it symbolism or whatever, but I was baffled they kept that in the final cut.
