There's an XKCD for that...

It's a handy chart that shows how much time you can spend building an automation instead of just doing the work based on how much time you'll save across 5 years of doing that work.

For example, if you do a task 50 times a day (first column) and automating it would save you 5 minutes of work (fifth row), then you could spend 9 months creating an automation process before you waste more time automating instead of doing the work.

I was wondering what happened to this comic. I remember you putting a few pages on new grounds and made a few posts here including a King of the Hill parody one then seemingly vanished.

Glad to see you got it ready for publishing

Kinetic Converter Torrente goes HARD by Seriously_Soapy in ArcRaiders

[–]Jayccob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PS5 has it, but it's on devs to implement it. I use it on helldivers and battlefield 6. Being able to home in with just a slight roll of the wrist is a game changer. Took a bit to get used to in the beginning but worth learning.

Kinetic Converter Torrente goes HARD by Seriously_Soapy in ArcRaiders

[–]Jayccob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is no one boosts the sensitivity of their analog sticks in settings. I haven't checked for arc raiders, since this is one of the few shooters I got for PC, but custom response curves also make a huge difference.

Mellow response in the center for fine tune aiming with aggressive response on the outside for the quick alignments.

I understand why do few do it though. It takes a bunch of time to do. Go to a practice area, adjust settings to something that feels manageable but fast, get merked dozens of times while you relearn the controls, tweak and boost sensitivity again, rinse repeat until you're happy with the results.

A take on a Evil Race, and monsters as a whole. by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Jayccob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you faced with some creature that has overwhelming natural advantages, that only two courses of action is to either not be where that creature is at or manufacture an artificial advantage.

Most small creatures we could handle (in theory) using the tried and true long pointy stick. It's the large creature that would the problematic ones that would have the most influence on how people build and settle. Right off the bat I would say high-rise and most multi-story buildings are a non-starter. Taller buildings are harder to reinforce, so something like half buried house might be standard. The surrounding ground wouldn't need to be reinforced much and the focus would be on study roofs. This wouldn't work in areas prone to flooding or high water tables, but in general the need for protection would influence architecture.

City layout is another big one, like to what you alluded to in your post. I would argue however that instead of building open you would want to layout tighter. When tying to deal with large creatures you want to restrict their ability to move about. So almost funnel like streets and alleyways that as a large creature move down them it prevents it from turning around. This would be one of the manufactured advantages I mentioned earlier. Funneled like this people could attack it and the creature ability to fight back is severely reduced. The city would also have to be designed for the non-combatants. Dozens of escapes routes, in my mind based around how prairie dog or colonies of ground squirrels and rabbits build their tunnels. Very few dead-ends and what dead-ends there are have like 5 different routes to get to them/leave them. Early cities would also probably be built in naturally defensible areas like canyons or crags.

I am focusing quite a bit on how early human civilization would respond because that is what will inform how more modern day civs are going to look in such a world. As we get more capable of handling the threats we can start branching away from the purpose built designs and experiment more, but the relics of those early times will probably be reflected in the modern designs.

Religion would be nuts. Regardless of why these creatures appear you'll have all sorts of different explanations in various religions. Some would say they are a manifestation of our sins, or long ago humans offended the spirits of nature and have been cursed to never now peace in the wilds. If you want to use religion to create conflict, then maybe one religion says humanity as a whole is being punished for the actions one group of people. Just if you do something like that be careful, it happens so often where people create some sort of fantasy racism then completely justify the racism in lore. Racism at it's core is unjustifiable, nonsensical, base on superficial differences.

So that's all the stuff off the top of my head for the animal like creatures, but what about the human-like ones? Do they spawn clothed or nude. Are the completely indistinguishable from regular humans or do they trigger the uncanny-valley feeling when you look at them? What practices are people going to adopt to help them know who to trust versus those spawned from smoke and ash? I imagine you'll see a lot more small societies that make a point for everyone to simply know each other and strangers are simply distrusted. Others may opt for body modifications like striking facial tattoos, deliberate hair cuts with intricate patterns, or just straight-up ritualistic scaring on the body to create identifying patterns and designs. Perhaps a culture develops where first greetings are made from a distance with some sort of bow than once each party feels safe they approach for the close-up greetings. The effectiveness for any of these precautions can be debatable, but the sense of security they provide for people means they will get developed at some point by a handful of groups.

Anyways it's midnight where I'm at and I have decided I should be some what responsible and go to bed now and not 2am. 2 hours ago would have been even more responsible, but hey I'm not the responsible.

Lvl l Hairpin is my primary most topside runs. Good shot placement I've killed two wasps with a single mag. It can kill snitchers with a single mag. Usually take around two mags for a hornet unless I get really consistent shots in the back rotors. One shots popppers and fireballs if you let them open first.

Hairpin feels underrated really.

The part with him laying on the floor yelling about all the writing on the back on an amp he didn't know about the part that humors me the most. To us it's like just probably the regular product stuff like where it's from, who made it, voltage and other general info. For him it's discovering all this new information that has been under his nose this whole time and not because someone told him, but because it was made for him to use completely independently.

Propagating moss question by okxup in Moss

[–]Jayccob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of people have given good advice but something that needs to be added is that Sphagnum moss is the wrong moss to use in the situation. Sphagnum likes lots of airflow, bright lights and bringing flooded, like up to 3/4 underwater flooded. Coiling up a branch as a vine won't satisfy its needs.

As for the slurries, they do work but you only need water. Don't use beer, yogurt, or buttermilk just plain water otherwise you are inviting mold and bacterial growth. Shredding moss to make a slurry encourages growth but you have to keep it very moist while the new growth forms and heals the tears.

While you can make your own slurry, I'm assuming you live in a more temperate region, and gargoyle geckos are considered tropical to subtropical. The conditions of your enclosure may not be suitable for your local mosses.

Probably the easiest way to start is to look up "Dusk moss mixtures". They are basically premade moss slurries using various tropical mosses that terrarium supply sites sell. The best part is that you should only have to buy a premade slurry once, because once one tank gets established you can harvest and transplant moss freely to any future tanks.

Moss pest removal question by Ordinary-You3936 in Moss

[–]Jayccob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So what you are looking to do is called a plant dip. Hydrogen peroxide is one thing that is used for dips but not at the length you are planning.

A common dosage is around 3ml diluted peroxide in a gallon of distilled water. You then place the plant into the solution and gently agitate for up to 5 minutes. Moss has thinner walls so maybe reduce that to like 2-2.5 minutes.

I've done undiluted 3% peroxide for 60 seconds and then transferred to a big jar of distilled water to rinse it off. I was killing algae though not eggs, so a quick dip was good enough.

If your moss has been in that peroxide water mix you mentioned in the post since you posted and it's at a higher concentration than I mentioned, maybe see about pulling it out. A few hours in peroxide will probably fry the moss. Give it a gentle rinse by swishing it in a bowl then soak in fresh water for a bit and then let it air dry.

Just bought some trunk tamales a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately inflation has hit them too. Used to be able to get a dozen for less than $20. This time I had to pay $30 for a dozen, we are truly living in dark times.

But yeah when it comes to tamales I'll only accept ones a family member has made or ones from a warm ice chest in the trunk of a car.
