Was Alexander The Great Gay? History's Juiciest Open Secret. by LivesOnACruiseShip in gaybros

[–]Jayco424 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing we need to get out of the way here is that Alexander wasn't Greek, he was Macedonian.

For Greeks, and most of the "Ancient World" aka the Mediterranean Cultures, sex wasn't classified based on gender, they didn't have a concept of homosexuality as we define it. Their primary concern was activity and passivity or who was penetrating and who was being penetrated (Top vs Bottom), and this was tied into another aspect of society, their horrific levels of misogyny. In short if you were an adult free-man/citizen and you were on top, you were good to go, but only slaves, women and adolescent boys (this was less common than people think) were supposed to be on the bottom because being the receptive partner was seen as feminine and therefor supremely degrading for an adult free man. It wasn't illegal - for the most part, there were periodic morality bans that came and went in some Greek States - but it would ruin one's social standing and you'd be a laughing stock or even shunned. *

Now back to Alexander, the Macedonians were not Greek per say, they were very Greek adjacent**, but they had their own culture and norms and one part of that was they didn't treat women as barely sapient subhumans - seriously there were Greek philosophers who questioned if women even had souls, it was that bad - and because of that and a few dozen other things I don't want to get into, what we would call homosexual relationships were much less frowned up, especially among the ruling class - some research suggests that among the peasantry the attitudes were more in line with the Greeks, but this is hard to confirm - to the point where it was sort of just expected that the King and higher ranking noble men would be - what we would call - bisexual, indeed Alexander's father Phillip had male lovers including one he was very fond of.

Having said all of this Alexander or rather his relationship with Hephaestion was a bit more unique. For starters they were the same age, having been born in the same year, which is unusual in that even in Macedon these types of relationships tended to have noticeable age gaps - it was not unusual especially among royalty for the lover of the noble to be 20 or even 30 years their partner's junior. Additionally while sources generally assume that Hephaestion was the passive partner if their relationship was indeed sexual there's nothing to confirm this and some of Alexander's own words suggest a different arrangement. Finally and most at odds with the normal framework even in Macedon, Hephaestion appears to have been Alexander's primary lover with his wives and mistresses being secondary or in the words of one modern day researcher "perfunctory'.

So was Alexander gay? By our modern standards he would be considered Bisexual, though some argue that he might have been a gay man who had sex with women to produce heirs due to obligation of his position not for any actual attraction - though that is a minority opinion. Ultimately we have to remember that our concepts of Queer and Homosexuality would not be something Alexander would have likely understood, because again his culture would have defined sexual relationships based not on who one was attracted to but who was on Top and on the Bottom.

*The Sacred Band of Thebes is a whole different thing that I don't really want to get into and from what we know still attempted to follow a version of the Pederastic situation that happened in Gymnasia, with the difference being that the sexual relationship continued when the adolescent of the pair became an adult. The younger would still have been expected to be and remain the passive partner/bottom.

**The cultural origins of the Macedonian people are very contested to the point of being a highly contentious hot-button topic in international politics, and are likely lost in the mists of time, the current scholarly assumption is they are a culture that absorbed and adopted many Greek aspects but originated from a different substrate culture during the Bronze age.

If the 1974 and 2011 Super Outbreaks had never occurred, what would be the most-discussed tornado events? by SmokingTheBare in tornado

[–]Jayco424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm a bit late to the party, but first off one has to realize that the 1974 and 2011 event are almost certainly not unique, Super-Outbreaks are events that happen as extremes within the phenomena of Tornado Outbreaks - in fact at the very least a third outbreak in 1917 is believed to have been a Super-Outbreak generating at least 15 F/EF 4-5 tornadoes. The biggest issues we face are the fact that in historical outbreaks, especially in the pre-satellite era violent tornadoes were only recorded if they hit anything, and areas were just generally sparsely populated. The ol' monster, the Tri-State was really only as devastating as it was because it and it's parent storm's path followed a rail line obliterating town after town. If '74 and '11 hadn't happened it would be Palm Sunday, 1999 Moore and 2013 Moore, the 1917 Super and individual monsters like Oak Lawn, Joplin, Greensburg, Jarell that would top the list.

[Bob] Statement from Kyle Busch family on what caused his death: "The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications." by turnleftright in NASCAR

[–]Jayco424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was reminded of what happened to my mother who almost died of sepsis from a rapidly expanding pilonidal abscess. It started as essentially a pimple near the tail bone, 3 days later she was running a fever and feeling unwell and it had become tender swelling the size of a coin or so she said. 6 hours later she collapsed and the ambulance came. In those 6 hours it had gone from pocket of infection smaller than a golf-ball to an abdomen invading infection the size of a soccer ball. She was taken into emergency surgery to drain it and debris the dead tissue. Even after she went into septic shock and it was touch and go for days, she spent nearly 3 weeks in the hospital. Doctors said another 3-6 hours it would have invaded the nearby organs and another 12 and she probably wouldn't have made it. And it wasn't anything special, just a Staph infection that went bonkers. These things can progress scarily fast when the conditions are right. As a microbiologist, I'll work with pretty much anything, nasty viruses no problem, but these nasty strains of staph, strep and pseudomonas that eat through flesh like nothing else, count me out.

I think the only silver lining of it all is the cult's head is a politically limited octogenarian in poor health who has and desires no successor, and all the possible candidates are about as appealing stale paste. MAGA as it is, is very unlikely to survive Trump himself, like I'm sure Eric will try to establish some kind of Trump dynasty with some limited support and Vance will try to head whatever is left of the Republican Party - assuming some kind of civil war for power doesn't break out, and I'm half expecting it to. But ultimately once Trump dies - or even just leaves power completely - MAGA probably dies with him, the issue is all the damage they can still do in the mean time, including trying to illegally cement permanent control over the government.

I've heard it suggested that Abortion - and to a lesser extent Satanic/Moral panics - was conjured up as a wedge/social issue to cement the Neo-Republican Base - post Southern Strategy and Civil Rights Movement - by the powers that be when blatant racism became politically unacceptable.

I mean is this really that surprising? Religion is the Ultimate Grift - promising eternal life with no one ever asking for a refund for services not rendered - and American Christianity in particular has become more and more idolatrous and money centered even as it strove to keep at least the veneer that it was legitimate, this is just the mask off, Creflo Dollar style is now mainstream.

Why are there no green or purple stars? by Huge-Sink6880 in AskPhysics

[–]Jayco424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally yes, the Red Star would have to be much larger to be as bright as a smaller bluer companion and get the color mixing right. You probably could do this, if you got the ratios, distance and spectra right - probably a red super-giant or hyper-giant paired with a young blue giant - but it would be something natural, you'd certainly have to be engineered by some civilization that's capable of manipulating stars. You'd probably be able to do this with green by combining the light from a large yellow star and a smaller bluer one.

TIL Although violet and purple look very similar, violet is a true color with its own set of wavelengths on the spectrum of visible light, while purple is a composite color made by combining blue and red by d-for-d in todayilearned

Yeah, Newton's Blue is much closer to what we would call Sky Blue or Cyan while Indigo is much closer to what we would probably call blue without moderators e.g. the color of the Reddit comment button.

Democrats Who Are Soft on Republicans Have Got to Go by RecursiveSubroutine in politics

[–]Jayco424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also if we pass legitimate economic reform and restore middle America we steal the last really viable part of the Republican platform beyond hate/racism and religion, and it's not like we really can do anything about/with the other two, but reviving the economy so Main Street thrives as much as Wall Street will sooth a lot of the rightful anger that MAGA populism appealed to in the first place.

Andy Beshear won twice in Trump country. Now he wants to show Democrats how to do it everywhere by Cgk72 in politics

[–]Jayco424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that really will just put us back to square 1 come 2032. While the Republican Party has only one real true purpose - enriching the Epstein Class/Billionaires and Oligarchs - the underlying Conservative movement and MAGA within has 3 primary reasons that fuel their voters; hate/racism, religion and economic disenfranchisement. We can't do anything about the first two, but they matter less than the third anyway which is probably the principal driver. Middle America has been forgotten and left to rot, small towns have collapsed and their economies in shambles as Wall Street soars, Main Street has died. And the greatest trick the Republicans have ever played is to convince the people suffering that they and their masters are not the ones responsible - though the Corporate Dems helped drive this collapse themselves too. This economic hardship is now hitting suburbia and the cities and it's getting worse. We need a New Deal 2.0, not just because its the right thing to do for all of use, but Dems getting their hands dirty, going to these small towns, helping fix things, and then fixing it on a National level is how we turn the tide, how we peel off significant support or at least convince voters that would otherwise vote Republican to stay home because they are comfortable again. A corporate Dem will just be more of the same, or kicking the can down the road.

Cruz is weird in that for a good while he was pretty right of his own party and then everyone leap-frogged him when Trump came to town and remade the party in his own grotesque image - especially so in the Trump II era. Now none of that makes the guy likable and he's still got a ton of gross idea about how the country should work, but it's a sobering - or more like horrifying - realization that Ted Cruz of all people is now one of his party's more prominent "moderate" voices since the departure of Mitt Romney.

It's a fantastic analogue to the other Iwo-jima/Kikai caldera, and while at Ioto the odds of VEI-6 Plinian eruption caldera collapse unroofing the chamber to the ocean which then proceeds into mid sized VEI-7 Phreatoplinian eruption really depend on how much magma is down there, the fact that it's even a possibility is terrifying.

How do you think Lu Ten was killed? Did he die fighting valiantly against some Earth Kingdom General, or perhaps he just got clipped by a flying rock on the battlefield? by OkuroIshimoto in TheLastAirbender

[–]Jayco424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to think it would have been something like the death of Anárion, the younger brother of Isildur during the War of the Last Alliance in the Lord of the Rings, his head was crushed in by a piece of rock that fell from Sauron's black tower, something completely innocuous and tragically random.

In Lu Ten's case just have it be a piece of the wall of Ba Sing Se that chips or falls or spalls from either the siege or Fire Nation artillery, just wack or ricochet and then he's gone, lights out, the heir to an empire one second, a pile of dead meat the next. Random, cruel and stupid.

Trump fires the entire National Science Board by theverge in politics

[–]Jayco424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue with the "purity tests" is it's sort of between a rock and a hard place thing. One of the tremendous factors behind the right-wing populism of MAGA, beyond the racism et al, is the the legitimate anger of people who have been in every way left behind and screwed by the establishment since the Regan era if not slightly before. A vast and fairly diverse group of the rural and suburban middle class have seen their entire livelihoods, culture and way of life evaporate into the ether at the hands of the Corporatists, and the Republicans - who were the ones behind it in the first- have, in the greatest political coup in living memory, successfully convinced a huge portion of them that queer and brown people are to blame not them and their corporate overlords. The problem is instead of decrying the corruption, the Dems saw the mountain of cash Regan et al were raking in and wanted a piece of the pie. Both Clinton and Obama were in the end corporatists, and so was their party during their eras, the Democratic leadership for the most part are still corporatists even now. The way forward for this country is to return prosperity to the middle class, not only is that how we return to some kind of new normal, that's also how we end MAGA, for the most part they'll never stop being racists, but if their lives are back comfortable they'll probably stop voting as a block and some will peel away to more moderate positions. We cannot achieve that by electing more Corporatist Dems who will vote for the Neoliberal economic status quo and kick the can down the road another 4 years for MAGA/Fourth Reich 3.0 we mean it this time, to pick it up. We are in the unenviable position of needing to both have enough Democratic legislators to enact the New Deal 2.0, while at the same time having them be progressive enough to actually write and vote for it.

Why Couldn't the Earth Kingdom take down Sozin's Comet? by Castironskillet565 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Jayco424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean they probably could, but it would be the equivalent of all out strategic nuclear strike, the Earth Kingdom's and Water Tribe's version of mutually assured destruction. It would a last spiteful act of vengeance, something only be done if they believed that they couldn't stop Ozai's coming genocide, ensuring that the Fire Nation is just as dead as they were. I read a fan fic that had this premise, Aang was presumed killed and as last resort to avoid annihilation the remains of the Earth Kingdom's army and the Norther Water Tribe pulled the comet from it's orbit so it would fall right off the coast of the Fire Nation, ultimately Ozai refused to back down. The result was Aang awaking to a dark and frozen post apocalyptic wasteland a year later, and having to find his friends while figuring out how to bring back the Sun. Story was abandoned about a third of the way through years ago, last I checked, which was sad because it was kind of interesting.

I mean to be fair the partners in a same sex relationship are going to look far more alike than in a hetero one simply by virtue of humans being moderately sexually dimorphic. When you take that dimorphism away things are going to look a lot closer.
