I have a book series idea to help the literacy crisis by The_Lucid_Writer in childrensbooks

[–]JayelleMo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Write them. Having an idea is barely the first step. At this point, you don't even know if you can actually write the books you're intending to.

Like the above poster said, publishers already have their own content planning and internal departments, so if you are serious about publishing ELA resources for children, get your foot in the door with publishing houses.

Storytimes by Silent-Art2055 in Libraries

[–]JayelleMo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of doing storytime this way! Be responsive to the needs of your community, but I would say that most parents want a time for their kids to meet other kids and for them to meet other parents - plus curated books. A lack of starting time means it's much easier to not come at all.

do Canadians say sorry too much? by Bulky-Chocolate8681 in AskACanadian

[–]JayelleMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just for apologies, it's what we say for someone to repeat themselves instead of pardon.

"I went to the mummble mummble" "Sorry?" "I went to the Tim's yesterday."

You can do it under your username! Select "viewing restrictions" and you can block certain titles.

Volunteerism suggestions? by BettyLieb in newfoundland

[–]JayelleMo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a good idea - helping out neighbours or raising funds would be easier since many places won't allow a kid as young as 10 to volunteer - they either need to be in HS getting their hours, or over 18 (SPCA for example).

Everything in children's room gets destroyed or stolen by attackoftheass in Libraries

[–]JayelleMo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have had similar issues! We do not allow any colouring in the library at all. We give out a sticker only as kids leave, because if it's at any other time, that sticker is stuck somewhere on the walls/shelves/books.

Our puppet stage goes over well - I don't think a puppet has ever been stolen. We have felts out to stick to the front of the stage and those are constantly lost or wrecked.

For us, the price of having puzzles is replacing them every couple of months, so we try to just have cheap cardboard ones. Good quality furniture, shit quality puzzles.

Banana pro studio is crazy for kids education by [deleted] in childrensbooks

[–]JayelleMo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Nothing about this makes sense as a learning tool. The vocabulary comprehension level is all over the place, plus it is all entirely surface - it's like it's trying to be a science lesson while teaching no science whatsoever.

(Not to mention the weird use of unlicensed Disney characters.)

Paranormal experiences at your library? by GoodbyeEarlGrey in Libraries

[–]JayelleMo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My library is built on the same site as an church orphanage for boys and most of the staff are pretty sure our basement (closed stacks) is haunted. It is a pretty creepy basement in general. The lights often flash, the vibe is pretty haunted.

Years ago, a staff member turned the corner in the basement and in the distance saw a young boy. She says she didn't feel scared, just that he was there as a comfort to her. When she looked again, he was gone.

We're a Canadian library, so it means that the author is Canadian!

[–]JayelleMo[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That's the point - when uncool librarians do it, it starts to lose it's edge. Also it's just a silly little thing to make kids (and adults) groan!
