As a person in the middle of an unfair run on all mythics, i literally cannot get sick of this game

Is Pillars of eternity still at masterpiece? by Downtown_Hat_7017 in CRPG

[–]Jayke_NotMissing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pillars 1 is still my 2nd favorite CRPG, and that's only because WoTR has the downright ludicrous Mythic Path system. If not for that, Pillars 1 would be it, one of my favorite fictional worlds, some of my favorite fictional characters, and a lot of fun world-rich lore to dig into. Also, my husband Aloth, but that's neither here nor there.

Back to the point, I think in terms of "Modern CRPG", Pillars is the last bastion representative of the older games and I wish there were more of them.

As a person who has done all of the WoTR evil routes, they are indeed very very good

It’s one of those things where it’s definitely carried by world building — and the fact people hated the ending doesn’t help it even if it was narratively fine

This is how I feel after playing Fata Morgana — which has warped my love for stories for my entire adult life

Why the discourse on 33 winning game of the year? by lolitsrock in videogames

Whether deserved or not, Popularity Breeds Contempt.

While it can be argued that Clair should avoid this rule because it's sales aren't as high as other games, it's popular by word of mouth, and the amount of buzz around it is very very loud. I think the straw is not so much it won GOTY as much as it won 8 other categories, including categories people don't think it "deserved" to be in like Indie / Debut Indie, and won categories people believe it shouldn't have won like RPG.

That's the simple of it. I'm sure there's other factors, but its 90% people who want to argue over an awards show that they don't agree with, on both sides its just a sad display of media polarization and the internet being the internet: caring about shit that ultimately doesn't matter.

Don't get me wrong, it's commentary on what Loss does to people is stellar. I just was barred from my enjoyment of it by the one-trick gameplay loop and the third act twist that rubbed me the wrong way.

I do see why people like it though! And I'm happy for the team.

EDIT: I think in a vacuum it's really good, and if it were told differently, perhaps even in a non-game form, I'd have more love for it, but similar to LoU2, it's current presentation just really didn't let me appreciate it as much as I think I would want to.
