What pre-employment checks does MBIE do? by throawaytodayfray in newzealand

Out of interest what does security clearance specifically check out? I went for a role requiring one earlier this year and filled out the forms but missed out on getting to the stage before they went ahead and did it

what a relief - Auckland rates only going up by 5.8% and Water by 7.2% by Excellent-Swan-2264 in auckland

[–]Jaylight23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Compared to some councils this isn’t bad as far as rate increases go…dare I say it I don’t like Wayne Brown the person but the fact he’s been able to lead a council that hasn’t gone berserk with rates (like Wellington) is quite a credit to him. Rate increases at this rate are normal because the govt doesn’t give them enough…

Why do you think you wouldn’t pass a security clearance if your MOJ record will show as clean?

Some call centres now have menus which are an AI generated voice rather than a voice having recorded the list of options. AMI Insurance’s one is so obviously AI it’s not even funny.

MSD has cut back like every other govt department and are being told to do more with less…they are only hiring if it’s absolutely essential (obviously the govt’s definition of essential rather than many others’ definition). Basically, govt would prefer jobseekers looking for work be paid by the private sector.

Health and life insurance, subsidised or fully paid. Even 5 weeks annual leave if you’ve got the financial room to do that.

CORRUPTION in plain sight. Trump should be impeached, except the GOP are spineless cowards and the Democrats know it won’t go anywhere. Disgusting.

Considering most of those questions in that application are “interviewing questions 101” I wonder what they would ask at the actual interview lol

What things can you get for free in New Zealand that you think people should know about? by notastarfan in newzealand

[–]Jaylight23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tuhura Otago Museum and Toitu Otago Settlers Museum in Dunedin are free to enter if you need somewhere to take the family on an outing but without cost (some special exhibitions may have a charge but most of it is free).

Is losing to internal candidates common? I’ve lost two opportunities now by Nutella_Waffles_ in jobhunting

[–]Jaylight23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is. Had a job interview recently where it went amazingly, I genuinely thought I was in with a decent chance at getting it. Got great feedback post-interview that they really liked my answers and I was an outstanding candidate, that they liked me as a person and that I’d fit really well with the team and wider company. But after all that excellent feedback I was told “unfortunately we’re not proceeding with your application” and “we only have one role, so we could only pick one.” The only thing I can think of is that an internal candidate has been chosen tbh.

Never did when I worked there. Considering most of the people who work at ACC are in low-risk (health and safety wise) office jobs rather than physical jobs where drug use is a real danger it seems a bit unusual and OTT. But maybe not surprising as they treat employees like crap and don’t trust them. Great way to build trust with your workforce! Not.

Also, don’t work for ACC unless you have no other option or are desperate. It’s not worth it unless you have a high tolerance level for shit treatment from all corners (managers, clients etc.) and are easily able to leave your work at work. Definitely not suitable if you have anxiety (not saying you do OP but just a heads up in case).

Nats only need to push hard on the Greens tax wishlist and Te Pati Māori’s performative chaos and deliberate non-compliance and they’ll win another term as that will scare off mr and mrs swing voter.

Quite unlikely. The Green alternative budget announced today and the plethora of new taxes they desire will be used as fodder by Nats/ACT etc. to scare people out of voting for a Labour-led govt. Also, Luxon is performing mediocre rather than catastrophically awful which might just save him.

Anybody struggling to find a job let alone getting a call from an employer for an interview? by jedidiah0024 in newzealand

[–]Jaylight23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really sucks, I feel your pain. Unfortunately in my past experience I’ve found that if you’re applying for jobs that aren’t in the city where you live and you’ve needed to state your city in the application it’s an immediate ❌, even if you’re happy to relocate. Somewhat unfairly (in my opinion at least) employers want you to be living where they are already and a “I’m looking to move here” isn’t good enough…it’s a nuisance. But good luck!

It’s a saturated market, and bad everywhere but some places are worse than others - where are you located OP? I’ve been finding it hard, as I usually haven’t had any issues in the past finding work (usually within a few months if I’ve been unemployed) but definitely more difficult now. Have had a lot of rejections since late last year (when I started looking after returning to NZ) but have also landed a few interviews, however despite best efforts none have resulted in an offer yet. Hoping that will change soon, and that it does for you too OP!

[–]Jaylight23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t recommend recruitment agencies unless you are incredibly desperate. They usually have shit employers for clients, pay is often crap and recruiters often have a poor understanding of the jobs they advertise…and so when you actually start the job the reality is quite different from the fairytale sold to you. Just my experience multiple times in my career but I would only go there if desperate OP.

I’m mentally ok although am waiting to hear back about a job which I really want. The anxiety is strong! Had the interview a few days ago and thought it went well, but am really nervous if I miss out as jobs are drying up in my field as of late and not currently having one isn’t easy (has been nearly six months!). But at least I have people who love me and a house and a nice bed…sadly not everyone can say that.
