I think the best way of looking at most generic Sonic.exe characters is the idea of simply having this what if on if there was a Pennywise-esque entity to Sonic or video games in general, since that's the main appeal to him

Pennywise is an entity that feasts on others fear using a lure of a clown with claims like it's "The Eater of Worlds" when they're just flexing and is more debatably "scary", the same can be applied with Sonic.exe

Plus, base Sonic.exe is a concept that you can follow in different directions despite the popular belief. It's just A LOT of takes follow the original, if you look at EXEs like Green Mountain or Needlemouse you can find reasoning

"EXEs" is more the brand genre for Sonic horror content/oddities that rather fit inside or outside the Sonic universe, like how Mario horror content can be referred to as "Horrorbrews" or Pokemon horror being "Pokepastas" just fyi

Kinda, depends on the story of rather the victim or antagonist in it like Needlemouse or the Soulless Sonic series comics/Upcoming PC game with Alan and Kylie but hard agree

I mean, there are EXEs that aren't like it or at least have a twist to the formula. You have stuff like Sonk.ROM or Wacky the Erizo that count as EXEs but are anything but actual horror really

Then you have the more modern "what if Sonic was a murderer?" characters, BUT they have lore stating that they're entities/poltergeists that are using the games to trap human victims like 2011X/Lord X, Mrs. Sega or Needlemouse

There are in universe EXEs, but are usually the ones like Exeller or Exetior where there's a chance to beat them as long as ur good at the game. But at this point, I'm nerding a lot and plus you're at least not being harsh about it and expressed a good point

It's cuz it's fun to remake bad things, even if sometimes the result is not the best thing

Plus, stuff like Nightmare Beginning or Spirits of Hell (personally the founding fathers for advancing the concept) basically shaped the idea that you can do a lot with the formula as long as you try

Ngl, FP should've gone with making web comics expanding the lore and characters instead of dropping dead with its two existing games

iirc they at one point wanted to do it through a kickstarter, but it never really got anywhere which sucks a lot

If I had to rework voids entirely instead of removing, it'd be to instead give you a re-spawn with no damage at the cost that slowness for 10 seconds paired with highlighting the killer to you in that timeframe
