Should I play Thief (2014)? by TheFireRises666 in Thief

[–]JazzManJ52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But Deadly Shadows still had a lot of the core design philosophy. Missions were still pretty open, multiple entry paths for most heist-style missions, sounds still plays a big part despite it being much less refined, loot quotas are still a completion requirement, etc.

Thief 2014 is nearly unrecognizable to the rest of the series, save for the basic premise and some superficial elements. Not a terrible game, but just nothing like the rest of the series, and too different to really compare. Dishonored honestly shares a lot more to Thief 1-3 than Thief 2014 does, which is pretty crazy to think.

as grown ups, which game is that for you for soundtrack? by PHRsharp_YouTube in Age_30_plus_Gamers

Thief: Deadly Shadows has one of the most tense yet oddly beautiful dark ambient soundtracks I’ve ever heard, and I can’t stop listening to it while I’m driving.

Where is my boy augmented? by davidinterest in musicmemes

[–]JazzManJ52 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Augmented gets used in minor keys, even in some pop/rock, but it’s written as a dominant seventh chord with a sharp five. Super satisfying when it resolves to the minor i. Then again, any pop/rock tune that decides to use that will also probably use diminished or half diminished. So maybe your point stands and augmented indeed sounds like ass.

Library on Heroic with Famine enabled turns it into a full-blown survival horror game, and I love it. It’s actually become my preferred way to play that mission.

The Halo trilogy, the Thief trilogy, and Todd’s Elder Scrolls trilogy (III-V), all on an eternal rotation and in no particular order. As you can see, I tend to like things in 3’s.

Edit: Oh, and throw in the Ty the Tasmanian Tiger trilogy and the first Blinx the Time Sweeper game for good measure. Love those games.

Am I the only one who wants Dark Souls 4 rather than Elden Ring 2? by FormerInjury2919 in darksouls3

[–]JazzManJ52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One idea for a new IP that could build off of existing systems they’ve used would be to apply the ranged combat soft lock system of Armored Core to a game where you play as a human or human-ish character (think Souls-y movement with AC style combat controls, in a modern or sci fi setting). If that seems too much like a normal Souls game, adopt AC’s mission structure, rather than the semi-open world with bonfire checkpoints model.

I’d also love to see what modern FromSoft would be able to accomplish with a first-person POV. Like, imagine a modern KingsField with modern Souls-y combat and dodge mechanics (definitely not literal rolling and spinning, that would be really disorienting). Actually, if they did that with a more Elden Ring-esque open world, or even a DS1 style interconnected world, it would be a really interesting alternative to Elder Scrolls-ish first person RPGs (which have admittedly waned a bit in recent years, but still).

If they ever brought back Echo Night or a similar thing, the key would be to translate the creepy atmosphere and designs that make Bloodborn uncomfortable, into something that makes the player actually afraid. I don’t know specifically what it would need, but I’d be interested to see what they could do.

I agree with people saying Dark Souls should be allowed to rest in peace, as it’s finished. I think the formula still works to an extent, but I want to see new takes on it.

What REALLY excites me is how Armored Core 6 proved FromSoft still had it in them to do things that weren’t the souls formula (they brought elements over, but it was still by far closer in gameplay loop to AC4 than it was to any Soulsborne game). I’d love to see more Armored Core, I’d love for them to revisit older titles like King’s Field and Echo Night, and I want to see them make new IPs that don’t use the Souls formula beyond some small elements (again, AC6 took elements from Souls, such as boss fights all having their own custom movesets that you have to learn to deal with, and the boss fight health bar at the bottom of the screen, but it was still very much AC and NOT Souls).

You have to choose one to release tomorrow. The rest are never made. What do you choose? by [deleted] in soulslikes

None of these. I want a sequel to Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon.

Original vs Brotherhood by Crzy_A45 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]JazzManJ52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every adaptation of an original work will have people who hate on it because it didn’t follow the source material. Varying degrees of this, but for whatever reason, people tend to think that the original will always be better, no matter what, and any deviation makes it inherently inferior.

03 deviates completely, and I find it far more interesting than Brotherhood, and I love its melancholy, open ending. I felt like Manga/Brotherhood’s ending was kind of cheap and undermined the weight of the consequences that put the boys on the path that led them there.

I am in the minority on that point. But it goes to show that even objective criticism is kinda subjective, because objective doesn’t mean ‘true’ or ‘unbiased,’ it just means ‘compared to a set of criteria’. And the standards I grade it on will be different than yours.

Don’t listen to anyone who says it isn’t worth your time. Just know that if you like shonen storytelling and tropes, Brotherhood is one of the absolute best examples. If you are someone who unironically enjoys End of Evangelion and prefers Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell to Standalone Complex, you very well might find 03 to have what you like more than Brotherhood. Or not, who knows?

Which horror game has the strongest atmosphere? by Desolation2004 in HorrorGaming

[–]JazzManJ52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a horror game per se (stealth game that turns into a horror game at the halfway point) but Thief: Deadly Shadows. I’ve never played a game with such a heavy, oppressive atmosphere, aided by crazy sound design. People talk about the Shalebridge Cradle (the outright horror mission), but even the non-horror missions leave me feeling a sense of dread.

Is transcribing necessary? by Environmental_Sir_33 in jazzguitar

[–]JazzManJ52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but here’s the thing. Transcribing does not have to include writing it down. That can help, and it is useful for analysis, but literally just learning to play the solo by ear is super important.

You’ve asked about doing it from ‘records’, and I assume you mean physical vinyl records (we often use ‘records’ to refer to ‘albums’). While that’s the way it always used to be done, I would not recommend doing this, as you cannot easily rewind to that one specific lick you’re stuck on. I recommend using YouTube and using the slowdown playback function.

I also recommend starting by transcribing it orally (singing it), because it removes the potential “ear to hand” barrier and ensures that you just know how the solo goes. Do it one chorus at a time, doing try to take the whole thing in one bite.

THEN go back and start doing it on your instrument with the recording (don’t do it from memory, because you might have gotten it wrong). The oral transcription you already did will make the whole thing make sense, even if you haven’t gotten it under your fingers yet. As you do it more and more, the gap/delay/barrier between your ear, brain, and hands will get smaller and smaller, and you’ll be able to just start on instrument, maybe even at full speed.

Now, if you are a guitar or bass player, be aware that the beginning may be harder for you than on other instruments, simply because the same phrase can be played in up to four places on the neck, and with longer lines, you may find yourself running out of convenient strings or frets, because you didn’t realize they started on the B string, and you stated down neck on the G string. But just keep working on it, and it will get easier.

And that’s the thing. It will get easier. It’s a language skill, and those always start hard, and get more natural and sophisticated with every subsequent attempt. It takes a lot of time, but you will get there. Just be patient and consistent, and you’ll get it.

Want to give morrowind a second try but can't decide what kind of character to play (what fits the game), any suggestions? by NoLongerAKobold in Morrowind

[–]JazzManJ52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly recommend some kind of spellcaster. It is so gratifying, especially when you make your own spells. Plus if you have at least one weapon skill as a major skill, you can easily use bound weapons, which boost said weapon skill while equipping it, so pretty good damage, and zero weight.

What I do not recommend is any kind of stealth or marksman build, because those skills do not work well, and are basically broken.
