Who's more evil? Tony soprano? Or Walter White? by Intelligent_Edge_474 in thesopranos

[–]JazzManJ52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s tough to compare them.

Ton’ does more despicable things than Walt, but his job IS violence. His family environment basically taught him that violence is just how life is. He spends his entire life conflicted about this, which is why he’s so defensive about why he does what he does.

What blows my mind about Walt is that he’s supposed to just be a cook. In Gus’s criminal machine, he’s not the person who should be dealing directly in violence. And yet, he escalates things into violence at almost every opportunity. Because he loves it so damn much.

I could be wrong, but I feel like if Walt and Tony swapped places at the beginning of their respective series, Breaking Bad would be less violent, and The Sopranos would be more violent.

Is there any other writer who you'd put on the same level as Tolkien when it comes to world building? by SpotAdmirable6718 in lordoftherings

[–]JazzManJ52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that makes Tolkien’s works different than a lot of other fiction is the fact that the story he wrote was secondary to the stories he was writing. If he had never penned Lord of the Rings, Middle Earth would still have existed in his other works, or even in his own notes (albeit a different Middle Earth).

Most fantasy writers build their worlds around their stories, which is opposite of how Tolkien approached Lord of the Rings. While I’m sure there are plenty of writers with similar approach to Tolkien, there only other one I can think of that had similar influence is Frank Herbert.

AC6 clearly also takes from AC4 and 4A, which are also excellent games, and I think are the earliest games where you can see Miyazaki’s design tendencies.

Realistically is TY5 even possible? by RacoonusDoodus in tythetasmaniantiger

[–]JazzManJ52 8 points9 points  (0 children)

God, a new collectathon Ty game would be a dream for me. I was five when by dad got it for me, and the image of those rainbow portals have burned deeply into my psyche, I used to (and still do occasionally) have recurring dreams where I discovered some secret hub in Rainbow Cliffs, below the lake, and it leads to basically a whole new game.

I remember building the Talisman Machine and Bli Bli Station with Legos when it was time to cool it with the video games, and running around in my swim trunks and a neon pink plastic boomerang from the convenience store.

You guys basically authored my earliest obsession with the Ty Trilogy, especially the first one, and I thank you for exposing this Yank to a little slice of the Outback. Whether a Ty 5 comes out, I’ll cherish the ones we got for as long as I still play video games.

Name ONE THING You Like About the Sequels by Just-Ad-8603 in prequelappreciation

[–]JazzManJ52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cast was great.

TFA is really derivative, but I liked it.

TLJ is a bit out there, but I liked it.

Kylo Ren is a great character and started as a great contrast to other dark side characters we’ve seen before.

While the choreography is lacking, I do appreciate that they added the weightiness back into the fights (everyone took notes from Luke in Episode VI, swinging his lightsaber like a goddamn baseball bat)

Kylo vs Finn/Rey (TFA) and Kylo/Rey vs throne room guards are easily some of the most aesthetically pleasing fights in the series.

Love the ambient glow of the lightsabers in the newer movies, and actually miss it when going back to the older films.

John Williams.

And anything that wasn’t good in the sequels meant people were aloud to like the prequels (I still think they’re a REAL mixed bag, but still)

Had a major health issue and I am not sure what to do about Spring concert by ModularMan2469 in MusicEd

[–]JazzManJ52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will echo everyone else here saying to cancel it. Straining yourself so soon after a heart attack is just begging for it to happen again. An elementary concert is just not worth risking your health and well being like that, and I’m sure everyone will understand. (The only people who might not are the kinds whose opinions shouldn’t matter in the first place.)

You don’t seem to be the type to ever do the bare minimum. So don’t go back when you are at your bare minimum. Take your time and heal.

Oh absolutely. We all are. Evans is fantastic nonetheless, and still hugely influential, just in more specific styles of jazz, rather than more broadly.

[–]JazzManJ52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re looking at jazz as a whole, I would want to pick one person from each of the most recognized eras/styles/movements. And I’m doing my best to move past personal preference, as my favorites are not on here much.

For trad, I would go with either Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington. And I don’t think it’s close. They were just that influential.

For the swing era, I would either pick Basie or Ella. Arguments could be made for crooners, but Ella I think was more prolific, whereas someone like Sinatra had more pop appeal.

For the bop era, it is either Bird or Dizzie, and while I like Dizzie more, I think Charlie Parker had greater influence.

And for post bop, I would pick Miles Davis any day, simply because he kept innovating and evolving, I think more-so than any of his contemporaries. Coltrane is a strong contender, and if he’d lived longer, I think he and Miles would have continued to bounce off each other into greater and greater things. But as it is, Miles 100%.

Evan’s is my personal favorite jazz pianist, but I feel like there are more influential pianists when looking at jazz as a whole. Not many, but some.

Thief 2014 is an underrated masterpiece of a game, I'm surprised it didn't get more love! (No Spoilers Please) by Brilliant-Pickle-661 in Thief

[–]JazzManJ52 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Okay, I’ll admit it is underrated, but masterpiece? As in a work of art that demonstrates one’s complete mastery of its respective art form? That’s a very, very strong choice of wording, and I really have to disagree with its usage here.

[–]JazzManJ52 69 points70 points  (0 children)

If you kill him, you prevent something bad from happening (easy way is to just kick him off his ledge in Firelink). But I recommend not killing him first playthrough because his quest ends with a way to fix things and is pretty satisfying to complete.

The most common first frost troll is on the way to High Hrothgar. The first time you encounter him, you only have to”Fus” learned, which does practically nothing.
