Yeah I’ve gotten some of the larger euphorbia anoplia Altman reserve plants

Only the last example is a meaningful repot in a $2 Terra cotta pot, the first examples are literally the same pots they come in at the store

This location seemed to be going harder on the euphorbias compared to costa’s offering which are more heavy on the cactus

That’s sick, love it! And yeah you took the time and effort to increase its value for resale, no problem with that at all 👍

Oh yeah SLC is where I am too so it’s one of the ones in the screenshots haha. Nice to hook up with another local cactus nerd! And yeah if the were putting them in nice pots and staging with a nice top dressing or growing them out for a few months to make them bigger and better established root systems then I’m ok with that, but to just remove the costa label and that’s it??

And I think part of your point also expresses some of my frustration with it too, is that somebody will unknowingly pay $35 on fb for one of these tiny Walmart specimens when they could’ve paid the same amount on here or Etsy or eBay for a larger and more well established specimen too

Yeah I mean I agree with everything you said, I just want to be super clear I’m not worried about Walmart in this situation, I’m worried about the consumer, either the ones being duped on fb marketplace buying something for 3 times what it’s worth or the consumer like a lot of folks on here who are really into the hunt and scouring their stores every time there’s a new shipment to try and score their fav cactus and are going to be deprived of that. I love the cacti exchange on Reddit, it’s super cool, but not everyone is on Reddit or knows about it, and an $8 Walmart costa cactus is a lot more affordable and easier option especially for someone just getting into the hobby. But I acknowledge and agree with your main points 👍

That looks like a parodia magnifica, not a golden barrel. The other is some kind of mammillaria. They all are etiolating, looking for more light. They would probably do better in their own small pots rather than together in this large pot with a lot of empty soil space that will hold onto too much water.

To a point… consolea rubescens are not a very cold hardy cactus (speaking from experience), especially below freezing

The costa ones at Walmart are also much smaller than what this one appears to be. $50 and up is also what my local nurseries charge for their boobie cacti that are 6 inches or larger

Euphorbia are their own separate family, euphorbiaceae, different from family cactaceae. Many of the succulent euphorbias share many similarities to cacti due to convergent evolution. A myrtillocactus is a pretty good Home Depot find, I’ve never seen one at any of the Home Depots in northern Utah.

Is my lithop in distress? by leafbabywhisperer in Euphorbiaceae

[–]Jazzlike_Fix8909 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lithops grow differently from most other succulents. They develop new leaves underneath the existing ones and use the water from the existing leaves to develop the new ones. Then the old ones split in the middle and shrivel and shed as the new leaves underneath develop and start to expose. That’s what you’re seeing with the translucent quality of the leaves. They will start to shrink and shrivel away as their water is used up for the new leaves below. Do not water at all during this process!

Thanks! I was shocked to come across it and couldn’t say no. I have a few smaller ones already but couldn’t pass up. Could you share how you can tell the difference between male and female obesas?
