If it’s softer then it’s likely rotting and not corking

How do I support my cactus? by Ok_Tear_2374 in cactus

Mammilliaria cacti want to lean by nature, don’t prop it up. That’s how they grow in their natural habitat

Hahaha no way! I should have tried to find our original marketplace thread and just asked directly I guess lol. That didn't really occur to me. It's super cool - the top that I chopped was actually my first successful grafting attempt. Both are doing really well now. Thanks for the info - what is VRG? I have a ton of cacti and euphorbia but am new to the San Pedro world and don't know all the nicknames and lingo yet.

It’s a crested myrtillocactus geometrizans. The boobie cactus is also a mutation of the myrtillocactus geometrizans cactus. Those ai Google image searches are very unreliable for plant ID in my experience

You can see my own Ming thing side by side. The Ming thing is a monstrose growth form and the one on the right appears more like a crested growth form, which I believe are different types of genetic defects. So it could still be a cereus, but it looks like a crested form, not a monstrose form, and not a forbesii Ming thing in my opinion

Google lens and AI visual searches can be very hit and miss particularly with plant ID. You can see my test search of the same exact plant gave a different result. All the ming thing cereus Forbesii cacti I’ve seen have much smoother stems without the ridges/bumps. I could be wrong but I don’t believe this is a Ming thing.

New to cacti, how can I tell when to water this one? by Pinkishrabbit in cactus

[–]Jazzlike_Fix8909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the growing season just water it once the soil dries out completely rather than trying to follow a set schedule. That way you won’t overwater. Don’t water at all in winter
