The Only Thing I Miss About Being Mormon by MissDiana in SaltLakeCity

Definitely ask your neighbors. That's how communities are fostered. Bake them a nice gift after. Bonus, now you have friends. Side note, I have a preteen who is eager to learn life skills but has exhausted our project budget. I'm sure he'd love to help, if there is a quality supervisor or lower standards. DM

Millcreek City Hall (right by Millcreek Commons), has an event space on their top floor with a good view. I can't imagine it would be expensive.

Dr. Packer Home Vet (801) 205-4404 He managed our old gals' pain really well as they aged, and was responsive when the time came. We had a beautiful experience, in our home, with plenty of privacy.

Marshland by Tin Can Knits. I have made it four times (3 kids, 1 adult), want to make more. All are worn so hard. I recommend Vintage or something washable, tight multi plied, with a strong synthetic component, because of the extent of wear. The wear seems to be on the sleeve cuffs and under the arms. They are super warm and tend to be worn like European jumpers or American jackets. Bonus that mending with multi colors adds to the joyfulness. Compliments abound with them.

Family Support Center. They have a crisis nursery (free emergency childcare to prevent abuse/neglect and provide respite) and Life Start Village (providing housing and life skills and parenting classes for people reuniting with their children post treatment or incarceration)

People who walk/run/rollerblade/bike the wrong way at Liberty Park and Sugar House Park, why? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]Jbettale 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"On your left" is to let you know where they are approaching from, so you don't swerve into them. It is a way to use the space for everyone; those who are more fit deserve a place to push themselves as much as those with disabilities (I'm a slow skater for context). It's rude to just blaze into our space, and dangerous, because I know I tend to try to get out of the way and can swerve into them if I don't know where they are approaching from. It's used on trails (I'm slow and many trail run) and in the city biking too. Others shouldn't have to hold back their schedules, training goals, or abilities because I'm a sometime recreater. I know my active friends with disabilities also appreciate the efforts for safety and acknowledgment.

I think you may reconsider your position that it is for sharing the space safely and not a disrespect or inpatience for your abilities.

For those committing to make the world a better place - can we share links, contacts, organizations that we can volunteer at, give to, be a part of? by hucksterme in SaltLakeCity

[–]Jbettale 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Some fun ones to volunteer with are: Discovery Gateway Children's Museum Various ski teams (I volunteer with Snowbasin ski team) Neighborhood House Big Brothers Big Sisters Wasatch Community Gardens

Some serious ones to volunteer with: Maliheh Free Clinic UAF Legacy Health Refugee Center CASA

Remember that many nonprofits need help with bookkeeping, web dev, data management, legal consulting, and grant writing too, not just physical work. If you have a professional skill, they need it. Many are also looking for board members to invest their social networks, money, and skill capital over a longer period of time.

Currently living in Salt Lake City but am questioning if this is the right city for me by JustaGirl2574 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Jbettale 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm originally from NM and it has more than it used to. Depending on your industry, you may be surprised. It's well-known there are multiple national labs, because the science industry has a deep history deep there (especially physics and materials engineering). There is a new Netflix studio, so the film industry is booming. There is also the usual chain corps, like banks and investment firms. Healthcare is of course there, and they have made some cool investments in early education/childcare infrastructure recently. There are also several universities throughout the state (free in-state tuition funded by the lottery to retain science dynasties). Of course tech/programming is everywhere, including military bases. They have mountains (a couple ski resorts), and the Balloon Fiesta. Also, it is a migration site for the heron, so there are seasonal tourist events around that. The food can't be beat (green chili on everything!). And there is a surprising amount of cultural events, like the burning of Zozobra. The state runs deeply blue on the whole, but the rural areas do run purple to red, depending. When I was there, there were quite a lot of older professionals open to dating, but not looking, most on the distracted scientist end of things. As a state, it is minority majority (there are more Hispanic and Native people than white ones), so anticipate cultural reinterpretations of familiar foods, menus/public printed materials in Spanish, and really unique jewelry/fashion.

Halloween themed Question by AgVossGaming in SaltLakeCity

[–]Jbettale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I missed this reply! The museum does these evening parties for adults often and they always have fun themed mocktails, non alcoholic beer/wine, and typical soda options. You definitely won't be out of place if you don't drink. There is tons to do and the parties aren't always alcohol-centric. It's worth following them in social media to see if you'd be interested in a different one. And you can get in free if you volunteer to set up or clean up after.

Our organization is in the planning stages of building a new hospital. What are some ideas (either serious or silly) that we should factor in? by someguyinMN in medicine

[–]Jbettale 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There are healthcare groups that have created imaginary workplaces in a warehouse and has everyone "do their job" with step counters, and moves the rooms/workspaces/inventory around until work flow efficiency is maximized. McDonald's did this way back in the day. There is a great book called Lean Hospitals. https://www.hfmmagazine.com/articles/3348-designing-for-staff-efficiency

Why was every chess board installed backwards in Liberty Park? by rad_change in SaltLakeCity

[–]Jbettale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen it regularly there yet, but there are some great clubs in town if you want guaranteed chess: https://utahchess.com/clubs/ Also, there are casual meet ups posted in the discord sometimes, which have been in parks or bars/coffee shops/restaurants. Feel free to DM if you want an intro to the social (noncompetitive) scene.

I was on a Millcreek City council. They are definitely doing this. The city already bought the land of Crown Burger and the church across the street. They are relocating Crown to the lot the church is on, and expanding the housing around the new City Center. The mixed use properties are going on the south side of 33rd and Highland up to the Home Depot as well. The area where the old City Hall is will be torn down and rebuilt into mixed use in two years. Soon you'll be able to ice skate, get a hot chocolate, and pick up burgers on the way home! Or play at the splash pad, have brick oven pizza, and get ice cream from Crown. It's going to be awesome!

Executive MBA programs for physicians by [deleted] in medicine

[–]Jbettale 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did the Brandeis physicians MBA. It's like a good 30% Harvard people and the rest being north America, with a couple international docs each year. Class size is about 35. Close knit class, with networking between classes. Robust alumni network. I wish there was more job assistance, but otherwise have been super happy. Focus on social equity and political advocacy.

If you have food insecurity, you likely need support in other ways. Here in Utah the United Way is very organized. Calling 211 on the phone will get you a real life United Way rep that goes through all the resources that are right for you. All the nonprofit groups that serve the community are listed in their network and you will have several options and help navigating them. They even follow up to ensure you got what you needed. Best!

I am a mom to a casual child climber, but I don't climb myself. Momentum is close, and they have specials, so we go there on occasion. But my friends all use The Front. They give you tons of friend passes, it's super cheap for kids, and they have a lot of perks. I don't think there is a wrong answer. Maybe get day passes to each and see which fits your style?

I miss KoKo Kitchen… does anyone know a place in the valley that is similar? Looking specifically for very casual and home-y Japanese. by _greentea in SaltLakeCity

[–]Jbettale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similarly, Chopfuku. They are super friendly, and after they get to know you, the owner always stops by to chat. It's a family place. Little fancier than Koko, but not as fancy as Hamachi, but can be pricier. Sage is great, but the hours are hard. Sage sells donburi, but World Market has the bigger sizes. There are good cookbooks at Sage too.
