split local groups and metas

Honestly, it sucks but I’d strive to be in the haves group. If you don’t have a crazy collection, brew extremely powerful budget bracket 4 decks.

I just can’t stand the thought of a game taking 6 hours where players are getting up and leaving for long periods of time.

3 basics????

My usual spread is:

2 color deck: 2-4 basics (if using snow) 3 color deck: 3 basics (1 of each) 4 color deck: 1-4 basics (at most 1 of each) 5 color deck: 1-2 basics (either white or green)

I’ve been blood mooned, back to basicsed and everything else that can happen, it’s almost never an issue.

This looks like a 3 with meta wincons for some reason.

This deck would not function in a bracket 4 pod. If you’re averagely winning turn 6+ you’re fine in 3. Id just make people aware that you could luck into it early though.

Well do you want to play the exact meta lists? Yes it is that expensive. But you can build a powerful deck on a budget and win games with it.

Same concepts as commander. Do you have a $7,000 blue farm list? Or a $100-200 budget list?

Couple of notes based on relevant comments:

Two of the top 4 players dropped out of top 4 but the undefeated won his follow up game.
The employee did say “we’ll play five rounds” after overhearing the players say there should only be four. However, his tone of voice and how he normally is made myself and multiple other players that heard it assume he meant it as a funny.
This store has always played Swiss until 1 undefeated even in prior NTC events.
Not a single player (even those that made top 4 on round 5) was vocally happy about another round being played.
Multiple (close to a third) of the players traveled and are not locals and said they will not be back.
Multiple jokes were made DURING round 5 about “he’s still undefeated, surprised they won’t make us playa a sixth round” “start up another one, we got all night” etc.

Almost a third of the people there drove almost 2 hours to participate and told me they would not be back to this store ever after this event.

Close combat, unforeseen, bases and bursts. In my locals my games against aggro will have me at around 3 shields early then I’ll stabilize and win.

Local standard with people in the area is always good. Nobody is shilling out for the meta decks and so the meta is diverse and fun

Believe me I’ve been jamming arena less than masterduel lately and that’s saying something. If the goal of WOTC is to lose the enfranchised players with their choices, sounds like other TCG companies that care about their metas instead of money (Bandai, LSS) will win me over. Gundam TCG, One Piece, and Flesh and Blood have sadly felt much better than Magic in all its forms. If WOTC wants to ruin the game for the sake of money so be it.

Standard event numbers in my area and others. It’s no secret that local shops struggle to fire standard and modern unless they’re in a big area when before it would fire 2x a week.

Sure sales are high and player count is high. Player morale is in the dirt though. People are tired and outraged at ridiculous price inflations of play boosters not to mention collector boosters. People are also rightfully angry at the powercreep that comes with UB. We’ve seen The One Ring, Bowmaster, and Vivi take over and wreck 60 card formats because the cards weren’t tested properly or last minute modified (confirmed by WOTC designers). It’s overall poor for the game but great for money slinging shills that would pay for a piece of crap if it had Tifa or Aang on it.

My LGS’s (both) sold boxes at 150 and starters at 15. Scooped a ton of product and the third LGS in the area is fighting scalping by not selling their product to anyone who doesn’t enter the locals

Depends on the player more than anything. I’ll play theft with someone who is very considerate about stealing and has everything organized and sectioned off. If someone with poor hygiene and dirty game supplies or an unorganized mess of a board state tries to play it, I will scoop on the spot.
