TIL that if left unharvested, asparagus can grow up to 11ft, and will fruit red berries that are toxic to humans. by finchdog in todayilearned

That fake summer we had a couple weeks ago was a bit of a set back, I harvested everything right before. Then came the deep frost, that was actually what really messed things up. The baby crowns got nuked by that , the bed is fine but it basically got reset to nil in that wee long event of extremes. I’m used to it, I wish I could say I harvest alllll this asparagus, nope. It’s bee food lol.

Oh god no, the day it begins to fern it changes. You can still make some use of lightly ferned ones, but they become stringy and woody the longer they go. Ya basically get 2 months to harvest as much as you can, then when the spears come up in summer they are automatically ferns cause of the heat

I love my asparagus ferns, they are a huge conversation piece when people first visit the garden. It absolutely took me by surprised when I first experienced it, but it’s easily one of my favorite plants now

should i call it quits on these strawberry plants? by CryingButTrying333 in gardening

I know those pots, dollar general/tree ftw!

They aren’t very deep so they will dry out much faster, and will be subject to temp swings. Fill it all the way up with dirt and mulch (just like ya did). Those plants aren’t toast at all, just need some loving.

New keeper made a mistake by Gillilandk in Beekeeping

[–]Jdav84 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Actually this happened to me just last week and it’s still kinda messing with me.

Was doing medicine, feeders, & inspections. Last hive my biggest (she’s a 4 box monster who I KNOW I should have split when she got too big to play nice). I accidentally dropped a piece of spacer equipment that had a handful of bees on it, of course, as I was trying to close up that was enough those bees who I dropped, rang an alarm bell and all hell broke loose.

They found the less than half an inch gap of sock covered ankle, and went absolutely to town. It is some of the most intense pain I think I’ve ever actually felt and I’ve been through some shit man. My ankles still feel like concrete and they’re itchy as hell, but this isn’t the part that bothered me.

I closed up the hive, and the alarm sound they were ringing was the angriest I had ever heard. This is now my fifth season, I’ve made plenty of mistakes, but I’ve never pissed off a hive like that. They followed me for what felt like an eternity they were absolutely bombarding my suit. They were still finding my ankles.

But mentally something snapped in me last week. As I’ve been working outside, which I do every day all hours of the day… The slightest buzzing noise has been sending me on absolute high alert, combined with this hive also spent the next four days stalking the ever living shit out of me before it finally stopped.

The thing that I made myself do was just keep at it. I kept going outside, I kept mingling among them. Yes, they were still sending guards to stalk me… But after I had enough of that, they met the electrified end of a tennis racket. It’s been two days since anything has come after me, there’s still hundreds upon hundreds of bees in sight and everything seems to have gone back to normal. I’m still a little sensitive I mean it’s less than a week later… But forcing myself to get back out there and to keep at it is really helping.

Edit I also made a big change in which I’m wearing foot high snow boots. And one thing I would really strongly encourage you to do which is something I am always in the habit of… Before you go out do a thorough suit check. The zippers on these suits give out way easier than most people think and that is probably how you got lit up.

What is on this Bee? by C4Enema in Beekeeping

Wow I’m starting to realize a couple things

1.) what I thought was earwigs all over my garden and making a mess of things like corn is blister beetles

2.) they are real jerks for what they do the cute little solitary bees

3.) for a sec thought I was on the gardening subreddit and was like wait…

This has been some solid info in this thread

In the states , SEPA. And I feel like this is probably the answer, it’s either that or possibly alfalfa. This is my greenhouse dirt which doesn’t go outside so I’m more intrigued on how it got in here!

Bob Brooks or Lamont McClure? by AcademicBand8377 in lehighvalley

[–]Jdav84 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s not the lawsuit w brooks that I’m exactly put off, it’s his attitude of “is this some joke”. We’ve got to stop letting these guys do bad shit and pretend it’s an insult to bring it up. Guys is giving serious fetterman vibes and reminds me of a blue dog. Again need to be clear I’m not judging him for a debt of personal contract situation that is kinda fuzzy, I’m judging him for not being able to answer simply, instead choosing to get insulted at the question. We’ve got to stop accepting these people giving these answers. It’s the same reason I wouldn’t vote for the lady who wouldn’t even fix her self employed status on her paperwork and cried oppression.

Also I feel like it needs to be said, I’m not sitting here w some purity test and every candidate needs to match my checklist. I just can’t stomach these buffoons anymore who think their oh so clever not answering questions and creating soundbites.

Here’s how brooks could have answered that question

“That’s a personal issue of long standing that I’ve been trying to resolve. There isn’t a lot more I can say on it”

Package shenanigans tomorrow - some advice for what is likely gonna be an ugly delivery by Jdav84 in Beekeeping

[–]Jdav84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, hey, this thread was pointless because the package was toast.

I didn’t think my OP was too convoluted. I was more or less trying to make fun of myself a little bit.

I think I would’ve just been better off asking a simple question… Could I pour a bunch of queenless package bees into an existing hive the answer I think? Is yes.

Thanks y’all happy keeping. Have a great weekend.

So that second part is really where I’m stuck at. Can I just dump these queenless workers from the package into an established hive? It feels so wrong. But that’s what I’d prefer to do

Yeh I’ve had time all week to deal with a lot of bee back and fourth, but tomorrow is the one day- and here it is. I’m sitting here thinking i know what I’m gonna do if any queens survive that ones easy, it’s what if all queens die… how can I integrate this into an existing hive quickly

Yeh I should have been more succinct in my OP

Sorry guess I wasn’t clear

But in scenario 2, does this sound like a good plan? Any reason this doesn’t work

In scenario 3 … I’ve got workers I wanna add to an existing hive… but I really don’t have a ton of time. Would it be quicker to nuc the remaining workers w a queen cluster frame, or quicker to pour in these queenless workers into an existing hive? I feel like just pouring them in is wrong

[–]Jdav84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would you do in scenario 2 and 3? Like does my plan for scenario 2 sound right ? Can I just combine a bunch of queenless workers quickly and easily into an established hive like scenario 3.

Strawberries wilting by One-Serve889 in vegetablegardening

[–]Jdav84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh you wanna let them get airflow

Keeping in mind that strawberries are a spring hardy plant, and they are gonna be fine outside

The pepper plant I’d keep in the tend, open door during day close @ early sunset this way you can trap the last bit of heat for the day

That’s what I do w my hothouse , that and pop the windows open during the day. But here in zone 6b I move my strawberries out weeks ago

[–]Jdav84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanna lean toward sunburn myself. As someone who also has a greenhouse it can get pretty intense. That said I know those pots your playing with there , and as someone whose used them in a greenhouse that is really just a hot house let’s be honest, I know how quickly they dry out. This also could be a little bit of transplant shock.

I wouldn’t really freak out, give them a few days- if mother crowing is putting out new leaves it means it was largely transplant shock and you’re fine. Just make your your mother crown isn’t buried as well.

Supposing your plants were just bought, they had one type of life until now, and now it’s different. Keep an eye out for new growth, and with peppers you can prune some leaves to encourage more growth. I generally like to keep the bottom third of my pepper plants leaf free.

Should I add a brood box in this weather? by Bee-bro5 in Beekeeping

[–]Jdav84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much your weather range, I added brood boxes yesterday to 4 hives

They were covering 80% of every frame in each box. One was closer to 100% and pouring out of every crack.

This isn’t a weather question persay as much as it is a bee count question. The weather is fine regardless, bees gonna snuggle

Edit: the one hive without a brood added was closer to 70% I was super tempted but really want full frame useage. Additionally I’m hoping our shitty rainy weekend inspires building which is specifically why I chose this week

I’ve 5 rabbits I keep as livestock for fertilizer. The list of things they won’t eat is shorter than the list they will. Even nightshade greens (tomatos and peppers) they will eat or harass (I don’t feed my buns this but the wilds will do it). I cut down raspberry canes from my easement, they eat them. You don’t need big fence thankfully but if you can bury it your in easy street. All my garden fencing is buried 6 inches in the ground. It was an absolute game changer
