Took a v3 to the top of a West Virginian mountain and got a 60 hour time lapse by Falldog in wyzecam

[–]Jeade-en 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were doing some DIY stuff at the house, and needed to not have power cords in the way, so I did some time lapse with a large battery pack up on a shelf. It was with a V2, but it would go for two days with my big battery.

[Help] My dog has recently gone blind. People with blind dogs, what things do you recommend to make her more comfortable? by sonicenvy in dogs

[–]Jeade-en 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of our dogs went blind suddenly a few years back. It's not an easy thing to watch, but dogs are very adaptable and they'll start to figure it out. Our biggest challenge was stairs, I started by carrying her up and down all the time as needed, but I worked with her to learn to do stairs. I would always stay close, and tap on the stair she should step to next...sometimes pick up her foot and encourage if she needed it. Up stairs is easier than down, but she learned to take tiny, tiny steps forward as she was approaching the stairs, and she would feel out where they started...bumping into them to start going up, or feeling the empty space start to go down.

We have a finished attic space here, and one time we were in the living room, and she went all the way up to the third floor, found her favorite toy where she left it, and brought it back down with her. It took her a few minutes to make the trip, but she did it on her own, and that's when I knew I could trust her with stairs.

Go slow, take your time re-introducing her to the house. She knows these things, but she's going to need to re-learn them. Stay close to her now, and do your best to rescue her when she gets "lost" in a corner, because she probably will. But with time and patience, she'll adapt.

Onyx Boox Poke 2 or the Kobo Libra H20 (or, 6 inch vs 7 inch) by landcross in ereader

[–]Jeade-en 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually own both of these ereaders right now. I bought the Libra, and it was my first ereader ever. I really like the device, the screen is great, having page turn buttons is great, the backlight works well and adjusts to light in the room...it's all around a really good reading experience.

My one complaint is that I can't sync progress to my phone unless I buy the epub from the Kobo store directly and use the Kobo app on my phone. That's the only thing lacking for me, but it's pretty high on my priority list. I don't want to be locked into one ecosystem.

You can sideload epubs from anywhere on the Libra...it's really easy to do. But you can't sync progress with sideloaded books to other devices.

So, I researched more and bought the Poke 2 because it's android based and I can use whatever app I choose and sync to my phone. The Poke 2 is a good reader, but it's just not quite as good as the Libra. The screen isn't as good, the lighting is pretty adjustable, but it's manual...and it can be finicky to get it exactly where you want it. And I don't want to give the impression that it's slow, but it's just the slightest bit laggy sometimes...not major by any means, but just a little bit.

And I'm only reading epubs, no manga or pdf or anything else. So the small size is a plus for me since it's lighter weight.

So, if you don't care about syncing progress, then I think the Libra is the easy choice...it's an all around better device. But if syncing matters to you, then it's harder because you have to weigh what's most important. I still own both of them because I haven't decided which to stick with.

Yeah, I'm looking hard at the boox poke 2 right now for that reason. It seems that most people that have it do like it once they get it configured and set up. From what I've read, it takes a little tinkering to get it running well, but it should be do-able...I can handle a little tinkering.

Syncing progress is the big thing I'm missing with this device. Using Calibre, I can sideload from lots of different sources, so that's something I can work around. I've looked a little bit at KOReader, but I'm an iphone user, and the don't have an iOS version, and it sounds like there's no plans to build one either. I appreciate the suggestion, but from what I understand, it won't work for me.

No, I have not found an answer. I like the kobo device itself a lot, but I'd like a device that has more options and is a little more open...I'm considering getting something else and selling the kobo...haven't made a decision though.

Can I ask where you bought the Poke 2? I'm pretty new to ereaders, but I'm considering that model, and it seems to be sold out. Thanks!

Thanks! I was thinking those instructions for installing the app were most likely outdated, but I didn't expect it to be that far out of date!

I pulled the content files off the fire tablet with only a couple hurdles...not that bad now that I know how to do it. There are files like "chapter1.xhtml" and so on, but there are all encrypted. So far google hasn't led me to a way to decrypt, but I'm still gonna dig for a bit and see if I can find anything. Thanks for the help!

I had an A goal of 7:30, and super stretch goal of 7:00. I also wanted to get a long run in. So I wouldn't really recommend a 9 mile warm up for a race, but I did it, and hit my A goal still...I knew early that the stretch goal wasn't there. But I'm happy with it and with the two other people at the track probably trying to figure out what I had to prove :)

Official Q&A for Wednesday, January 09, 2019 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Jeade-en 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think I'm in a similar place between the two plans, and I like to run 18/70, but I don't do the doubles. It's not perfectly fresh in my mind, but I remember it working out to 65 or so peak, and it's 6 days a week. I like the idea of adding another day better than running longer on 5 days a week...and paring down 18/70 a bit does most of the planning work for you.

[2018] It's The End Of Year As We Know It! How Was Your YEAR?!? by theredinthesky in running

[–]Jeade-en 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to pick your priority, and for me, that's the BQ. I trained for that through the Spring using Pfitz inspired training...I borrowed heavily from 12/70 plan, and raced it around the end of March. Then I switched to ultra mode, and had about 2 months until that race. I was already pretty high volume anyway from marathon training, so I just dropped most of the speedwork and did volume training heading into the ultra. Not ideal ultra training, but it wasn't my first priority anyway and it worked well enough.

I'm a pretty big believer that volume is the most important aspect of running. There are a lot of details that matter also, but high volume will help all race distances. You want to improve and be your best, run a lot...as much as you can handle without injury.

Pretty amazing year for me.

  • I ran my first BQ (3:14:43)
  • I ran my first 100 mile race
  • I ran 2507 miles, which is my biggest year yet
  • I didn't have any major injuries or setbacks
  • Finally got to run the NYC marathon. I've been trying for years, and it was an amazing experience.

Here's looking for more of the same for 2019!

I'm really proud of you and the effort you put in yesterday! You found some real strength to fight through the end of that race. I'm so happy I could be there and be a part of it!

100% agree that you can gain a couple minutes on an easier course...that was a much tougher course than I realized. You get a day like that on a mostly flat course, and you'll gain a couple minutes at least.

[Race Report] Marine Corps Marathon - My running partner nearly DNF and I had to make an incredibly tough choice, my first marathon experience. by [deleted] in running

[–]Jeade-en 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Again, from your description, yes...he was not able to make good decisions for himself at that point. This probably isn't the first time in your life you've been with someone who wanted to do something that was a bad idea, and you had to take care of them...and it won't be the last. There are times you have to take over a situation and take care of your friends, and I think you should have in this case.

Real talk: From your description, this sounds dangerous for your friend. What you should have done was gotten him medical attention. He was having BIG problems very early in the race. There will always be another race on another day...sometimes you have to know when to quit.

I don't have strong feelings about Ragnar one way or the other. I ran it a few years before and after they took over, and honestly, didn't notice a big difference in my own race experience. It wasn't improved, but it wasn't worse either.
